The combat footage is GREAT !! At frames 37.28-. 37.32 or thereabout is a short reel when a real Marine shoots two . 45 machine guns at the same time. He had a Thompson in each hand !!! Who has ever done that for real !
The Japanese civilians living on Saipan had been warned by their military and government that the American soldiers would rape, torture and murder everybody they took prisoner. Because that was exactly what their own Japanese soldiers would do to their captives, the civilians believed that this would be the case. This is probably one major factor in the decision of the people of Saipan to take their own lives, at the end of the battle.
This has to be one of the most boring videos I have had the displeasure of hearing! The narrator could put anyone and everyone to sleep with his monotone! There is no way I can watch all of the video with such boring narration!
It’s a pity that the narration stated that the enemy in Europe was a lesser challenge and not as ruthless as the Japanese were, both the German and Japanese were fanatical and ruthless and drawing such a comparison is belittling the allied forces in Europe and is untrue.
@@allandavis8201 thx for watching and commenting! I think you’re taking that line out of context. It doesn’t imply the Germans were a lesser challenge. However, the Germans would surrender, sometimes in the tens and hundreds of thousands, especially towards the end of the war, and especially units constricted, while the Japanese would fight to the death, or commit suicide vs surrender. It speaks to the horrific nature of fighting in the pacific, similar to the themes of the HBO series ‘The Pacific’ vs ‘Band of Brothers’. For example the data point from the invasion of Peleliu that found it took over 1,500 rounds of ammunition to kill one Japanese defender speaks to the challenging nature of that theater. Either way, appreciate your comment and hope you enjoy more of our videos.
@@Militology taken in the right context, you make damn sense. Germans yes were fanatical and professional but always surrendered and withdrew when conditions called for it even in the mid-years of war. However, the Japanese didn't care anything like conditions and surrender was out of the question. They still fought with virtually no ammunition, no food, and even when massively outnumbered. Yes I also share the opinion that fighting the japanese fanatics was far much hard, stressful and traumatizing than facing germans.
@@smartbomb7202 How do you reach the conclusion that the Germans on the Western European theatre of operations were less ruthless than in the Eastern front?, are you saying that the Holocaust was not the most ruthless part of the war, are you suggesting that the deliberate destruction of whole towns and villages along with the residents being locked in churches etc to die a horrible death in the fires, are you suggesting that the Warsaw ghettos were not ruthless, are you saying that the deliberate killing of the untnrmenchen citizens of Germany was not genocide, are you saying that the deliberate use of the concentration camp inmates for despicable “medical experiments” wasn’t ruthless and inhuman, are you saying that the working to death of hundreds of thousands of civilians through forced labour wasn’t ruthless, are you saying that the order to execute all captured Special Forces (Commandos etc) without reason wasn’t ruthless, the implementation of the scorched earth policy wasn’t ruthless, the orders to never surrender to the allies wasn’t ruthless. I could go on and on with FACTS about how ruthless they were, sorry but your statement just doesn’t hold water, perhaps you could present YOUR FACTS, and maybe I might consider revisiting my original comment.
The SS were brutal yes but they were not the majority of the German military in the Pacific almost 100% of the Japanese would fight to the death and they were extremely brutal to any POW whereas in the European campaign there was some brutality, of course to the POW, but in general Germans, good follow the Geneva convention while the Japanese did not follow it. The comment does not well that the brutality of war in Europe.
