I'm glad we share a few points (positive and negative) on this product. I reviewed the sub-brand and I think you're right, the 10" screen was probably one of the reasons for being wobbly. I came up with similar conclusions but - at least for the price it was advertised at the time - I could not recommend it. Thanks for the honest review!
Thats interesting. I have that in my Amazon wish list... Lol Being 1/2 blind from a stroke I was thinking this would at least allow me to do some soldering again without a magnifier which is a pain because of my glass's. Thanks... I enjoy your videos a lot. I just don't comment but always chick the Like... LLAP 🖖
You should take the base of that microscope and throw it in the bin.. Integrate the vertical post of the microscope assembly directly into your workspace by either attaching it to a wall, an adjustable-lamp-arm or similar, or just directly onto the desk itself. Personally I'd have used a camera/lamp adjustable arm (like a microphone boom arm) to hold the microscope optics, monitor, and LED lights, that way there's nothing beneath it and you have full range of motion without ever "bumping" the microscope.. And being on a boom like that, it can be easily lifted up and out of the way, or swing away closer to the wall, for storage.
I have a similar microscope and I did what you were talking about in the end. I attached the microscope to an arm lap stand, and I use another arm lamp for light. It's very nice to just push the microscope away and be able to see in the center of big motherboards and such. The downside is that it's wobbling, but it's fine.
Some of the issues easy enough to fix: for example I would design and 3D print a bigger base that the supplied base fitted into and incorporate a flush holder for the KED controller with hidden channels for the cables. Also some sort of bracing to hold the screen assembly more rigid. Good review that makes me think it is worth buying. Thanks
Idea: What I would do to the wood board is cut a square from the top to center and slide in to match the microscope base, turn the wood board into an extension table that's at the same height.
believed or not, I do this with a mobile phone in a clamp, and watch, control (zoom, focus, light, etc etc) and record (video and pics) the camera on the PC.
awesome video! Dont feel bad about reviewing products! Many people here that fallow your videos are very interested in knowing what are the best tools for the hobby and to see you use them and your technics For example I am still looking for a cheap ZD-915 desoldering gun... I would never know about such nice desoldering gun if it weren't for you ! Maybe on day I will too get such a microscope
Great review! I bought a similar 7" microscope last year, which has been very useful. I can't imagine soldering without it now to be honest. I have the same problem with the chassis and small base plate on mine. I can usually rotate video cards around well enough to find a good angle, but it's not useful for motherboards and larger PCBs. The base of mine is even smaller than this one from what I can see. Very curious to see what you do to modify it because I'd like to do something similar 👍
I just ditched the stand that came with mine. Instead I got a gooseneck stand with a 1/4" tripod mount (the kind that clamps on a desk). I then designed and 3D printed a clamp that fits around the microscope (pretty trivial, basically a shape that looks like a "C" and that is the diameter of the "tube" part of the microscope. you can probably knock one up in TinkerCAD in all of 5 minutes.) So now the microscope can float freely anywhere on my desktop, and I can position it any which way I need. I also got some gooseneck LED lamps that I can use if I need additional lighting.
The model that I own, the cable meant for the base and the screen, seems to be power only. The manual said it didn't work on the PC either, but using a different USB cable on the screen made it work on the pc.
never thought i would be watching microscope unboxing, but here I am :D that software for windows. is it not suitable for making videos? i mean more detailed content and such :)
I've been looking for a microscope and I kinda wanted to try out a camera microscope. But, after seeing the review the FoV, or well, the zoom is waaay too much for my liking and no quick way to switch from like 2x - 20x zoom is kinda deal breaker for me. Guess I will keep looking :) Great video as always though! :)
Looks like a nice basic microscope that gets the job done. I bet you could 3D print a VESA mount to replace the stand and connect it to a monitor arm. That should give all the mobility it needs.
Great review, thanks. You might be able to put the unit on a small shelf raised above your bench, then flip it around 180 degrees, so a large board would slide underneath the support bar.
Thank you very much. I actually 3D printed a holder which can be inserted into my camera stand above the table. Now I can just switch the camera with the microscope whenever I need it.
I recently got a similar Chinese microscope, the DM9, and my opinion is pretty much the same as yours. I plan to get a table mounted arm mount for it, like those for microphones and desk lamps, so I can position it over my workbench.
I wonder if you get a good result using one of those ring shaped lights that youtubers/tiktokers use, centered around the actual microscope lens? That would give diffuse, bright light and directed downwards around wherever your viewport is.
There are microscope lights like this. They are better than nothing, but not actually that good when it comes to to read IC's markings. Goose neck lights are better for that as they provide more flexibility.
A slightly used (ha, ha. Ok. Much used) Go-Pro, w/ macro lens, hooked to USB-C power and a mini HDMI cable, works very well. Mount it on long gooseneck to your solder station or a shelf above. Nice way to recycle a used device, without buying a new battery for it.
Can you tell me if this model turns off the main monitor screen when connecting HDMI? I thank you very much for your information, it is helping people around the world. Thanks.!
“ I have no windows at home” Now that sounds like a goal I worked with windows all my life. I’m retired now and non windows is sounding like a better life. 🤠
How much is the delay between the screen and what you are actually doing? Cheaper microscopes often have this problem where what you see on the screen is so much delayed that working on a PCB becomes impossible...
Heh. Adam Savage did a couple videos on what I think is this same microscope on the Tested channel, and the first thing he did after the initial test was adapt an old microscope base to it. Seems everyone who gets one of these reaches the same conclusion that the base is a bit limited.
This microscope has it's uses, but I would not recommend it for fixing motherboards. Problem is with the base which is small and you have to put something under the motherboard to make it more stable, because you can't solder when the motherboard is moving. Been there done that and no thank you. Also there isn't enough space due to small base and metal stand so you have to adjust yourself and the board to the microscope and not the other way around. This maneuver can affect the quality of your soldering job. Metal stand is always in the way when turning the motherboard around. I would propose to add some more money and buy a stereo microscope with an extendable arm. At least for our kind of work 🙂
I work with computer maintenance and software support, and have a degree in biology which I still don't know what I'm going to do with it, but that's the part where both worlds come together haha

The way you PRONOUNCE the word 'focus' sounds VERY SIMILAR to the phrase "F**K YOU'S" lol - I KNOW that's not what you are saying, but the first time I heard you say it it caught me off guard lol ... I hope I'm not offending you or anything,I just want to help you out.... maybe you could think of it as saying 'Foe Cuss' or 'Fo Kuss' (I'm not sure the best way to write it phonetically ... but this is the best I could come up with) I hope this helps you out... you speak really good English the rest of the time, and this has been one of only a small handful of words that I heard you mispronounce, which is much better than the 2 other native German speaking youtube channels that I'm subbed to and watch regularly ..... I just hope you don't mind that I 'corrected' you... which I only did because it sounded so much like the offensive phrase lol :)
LOL 😂 of course I don't mind, I even insist on corrections, otherwise how should I get better? Thank you, I'll try to get my fo kuss on the pronunciation to improve it.
the whole time I was thinking back to Hellboy 2 every time he said it. I hadn't realized that was a real thing with the accent. the line in the movie I think was, "That word, Focus, with you're accent, I wouldn't use it." I'm not criticizing, just a funny observation.
@@necro_ware This may seem funny. There's only one way to break an accent. You have to sing english language songs. By drawing out words, it forces one to flatten their speech pattern. Ok, spy class is over. :-P

Hi! Thanks for the useful review! Will buy this one for myself. I have a question about this tool that you use to remove soldering mask - what is it?
Hello. Thank you. I use engraving tool and Dremel.

I don't understand how 320mm is short while 30cm is plety of space.
Of coure probably of magnifications, but hey..
Good video.
One question, how long is the delay between the movements and the image on the screen?
Hi. The delay is barely visible with a naked eye. You can easily solder by looking at the screen.

A movin arm with integrated light would be nice. You'd just swing it away when done.
How many centimetres from the top of a board can the camera reach, or how far can camera be extended?

I've been generally wanting one of these for my Tinker Bench, but when the price tags are $300+ US, Same with the Nicer Soiling/DeSoilering Stations.
I have the AD206, and agree this really needs a boom arm. Anyone have any good suggestions for a sturdy boom arm.
is this the newest model?
I have a few been using them for years
If it has external output port like HDMI or VGA, so separate screen can be used and placed anywhere on work bench.
