- I had a unique opportunity to interview Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the recently released budget, the Canadian real estate market, the economy, and financial literacy.
Not really sure who this Trudeau guy is, but he must be important if he's made it on to The Plain Bagel.

Thoughts on the interview...
He completely dodged the first question about how to define the middle class.
His ideas about increasing the supply of homes seems at least plausibly good ideas, though the mention of AI felt like throwing it in for the sake of the buzzword.
He seemed to sort of dance around the question asking how you make housing more affordable without damaging the economy of real estate investment. He answered that they're trying to balance this, but that's impossible. If you bring the price of houses down, the people who bought them as an investment will lose value, and if they see the supply continuing to increase, then they'll know that housing will continue to lose value, further damaging real estate investments. Now maybe the answer is that they shouldn't worry about real estate investments, and that's a valid stance to take, but that's not the one he took in the interview.
His answer to the productivity question pointed to a lot of good data points about Canada, which, while giving credit to the Canadian economy, doesn't really talk about the question of productivity. Though his thoughts about leveraging Canada's good financial position to help the country is interesting. It makes sense to a point. But it can also be taken too far, leading to squandering their good financial position.
His idea that childcare is not only a social program but also an economic program is a good one. It's a cost, but sometimes, it takes spending money to make money. If spending taxpayer money on childcare lets parents stay in the workforce, that generates economic growth, leading to more taxes being collected to offset that expense. Similar with the spending to attract the foreign investments. It could be seen as cooperate welfare, but if that spending leads to good jobs for the area, that can be a win-win situation. Whatever deals there are would need to be structured in such a way to ensure it actually works out well for Canada and the people, not just good for the business.
Pointing to TH-cam videos as a place to understand these complicated topics was not what I expected, but it makes a lot of sense. I don't trust the mainstream media to give me an understanding of the complicated topics. But I learn a lot about these complicated issues from Plain Bagel and other TH-cam channels. Granted, some of them are also all about outrage, but there are good ones out there.
Disclaimer: I am not Canadian nor do I know anything about Canadian politics. But it was still very interesting to hear Trudeau's thoughts here.

Also not canadian but I very much agree with this summary. Obviously he is a politician and he is using it to appear open and approachable but I think that overall it was better than many other politicians.
Yeah, the major issue with removing housing investment incentives is... well... every country that has implemented them has made it dumb not to invest in property if you have the money, and that includes politicians (it is particularly bad here in Australia).
And even if they shouldn't ideally be building policies on what they themselves benefit from, we live in the real world and humans are predominantly self focused individuals if not forced otherwise.
I would be interested in you doing a retrospective on your interview, and comment on where you agreed, or disagreed with the PM's answers. where you would have pressed further, and what follow up questions do you wish you would have asked.

I’ve often wondered what this NDP/Liberal prime minister’s definition is of that.
There's no good way to answer it, because everyone thinks they're middle class. People who make $500,000/year think they're middle class. NYT did a long article on this a few years back. There's no way to answer it honestly in a way that won't lose votes.

This is a really good interview. I liked the lack of trying to have a 'gotcha' moment and letting Trudeau just speak, I believe, made the interview much more productive.
Given the limited time, there wasnt much he could do to drill into the discussion anyway. 20 minutes isnt enough to get through a lot on these topics.

As an american, the most incredible part of this interview was listening to a politician who can string together more than 2 sentences in a coherent manner.
You should watch the last Prime Minister, Stephen Harper. Way smarter and less phony intellectually. Harper was political like all politicians, but he had a much better grasp of the economy than Trudeau.

True, Trudeau is fairly well-spoken but most of us in Canada still dislike him. He’s a narcissist phony who rarely answers a question straight, and he’s led us into some tough financial times by boosting immigration while gatekeeping housing development. He’s also just not very smart to be honest. I don’t loathe him, but he’s not a great Prime Minister. Biden is actually better at his job than Trudeau is, believe it or not 😂

Well, in this case specifically, "getting political" seems quite ok, no? It is a politician talking politics right there. I think perhaps by "getting political" you mean when people rage at each other, which is not an inherent characteristic of politics, though given how deeply it can affect people's lives, some level of passion is usually to be expected.

You did so well man, and I especially like the self critique. Shows people what they could be expecting from the seasoned journalists too when they don't, so feel free to actually state what you disagreed with and how you would have liked to have pressed. It's all part of critical thinking. People on this channel saw a good example just now of how they can disagree with your objections so it would be good practise. A video like this would not be tarnished by your injection of bias either, you don't do it on every video so it would be consistent for you to comment on topic with rational reasons and carefully structured disclosures like you do. Perfectly reasonable and in keeping with the channel's ethos imho.

Also, I think Trudeau would find himself hard pressed to insert that topic into what was, for the most part, a sober discussion about his vision for a set of Keynesian style policies for the remainder of the decade as well as the sectors Canadian state wishes to foster under its umbrella - chinese style.

Greetings from BC! Objectively, this was a great interview and discussion. It stayed on topic, the questions and answers were well thought-out and detailed, and it didn't get bogged down in the usual politics of mud-slinging at other parties. A longer interview would have been awesome to allow a little bit more pressing or follow up points. I also really enjoyed the extra context provided at the bottom and would definitely look forward to more financial interviews of this format, especially focused on Canada.
Good job Bagel man, don't be too hard on yourself. As you said, to answer back on an answer in an interview takes experience. The next time, and I hope there is one, you'll be even better!
I think your conclusion is a pretty strong point, and I look forward to your post-interview analysis for a bit more depth. Trudeau made some good points but was definitely primed to pack the airspace with his talking points. It's a little disappointing that time constraints protected him from pushback, but also heartening that the points themselves were mostly solution oriented rather than defensive, combative, morality hand wringing, or otherwise focusing on _blatant_ emotional appeal.
It speaks well of your channel that this is how Trudeau or his campaign advisors chose to appeal to your audience.
Interviewing a PM is Dark Souls difficultly. Time constrains or not, you need to be a god like interviewer to follow a line of questioning, as they have so much more experience, forcing you to think faster than they do. Such skill is as rare as the leaders. He did very well for a rookie going beyond the baseline of appropriate questions and speaking clearly. It's very easy to get blinded by raw charisma. Trudeau lowered the difficulty a lot because he cares, pre-emptively answered follow-up questions, is honest, knows what he is talking about and wasn't out for blood or to "Win" the encounter.

That went about as well as it could’ve gone. You’re never going to get in depth answers from a PM typically, but it seems like he really did go into greater depth than usual because you built rapport and asked some smart questions. It’s a delicate dance interviewing politicians and you did it great, especially for a first timer!
Honestly, compared to most soundbite focused interviews with PM's/politicians, I thought this had a fair bit of nuance/depth.

Great video and conversation. No sugar coating but also no unnecessary interruptions or gotcha moments. I wished we got more like this across the West, where politicians just get to speak their minds about their plans.
Zoning laws contributing to our housing woes has been understated. Edmonton took big steps not too long ago and it shows in the prices. Which makes the fighting and heel dragging of the Alberta government even more frustrating.
This is on top of real estate being the most favorably taxed asset bar none. What else do you get to exclude completely even while you're getting the full usage and benefit from?
Another thing he briefly mentioned was red tape, as someone who worked in construction and has worked along a Canadian crew two times in my career it was interesting to see their surprised at how quickly we can move a project along down here. In no way am I saying the US is better than Canada or anything like that but the electricians just kept saying everything we did would have to be inspected pretty much every step of the way.
That was almost a decade ago so I'm not sure if things are still the same way but it was eye-opening to see what other Crews had to go through to get the same job done
@@96ej They're likely the same way. Building codes in Canada are Provincial jurisdiction, so I can't speak for every Province. I'm also not an electrician (or really even a tradesperson. I'm an auditor by profession. I just do a lot of renovation on the side). However the building code for the two Provinces I've worked in are so unchanged that my partner, who _is_ a tradesperson, was given an 20 year-old copy to study for her Red Seal.

Hasn't been understated, that and building regulations is all the federal government puts the blame on.
At the end of the day it's still the immigration numbers. Toronto and the GTA has seen so much construction in the past 10 years, they've built condos everywhere. There are new subdivisions popping out everywhere in the area, from 30min from Toronto to 2 hours from Toronto.
It still hasn't kept up with demand because the government can always stamp visas faster than you can build an entire condo -- no removal of zoning laws or construction regulations will change that.
For home prices to go down, this government MUST be removed. I do not trust them for a single second to not instantly increase immigration numbers the second the new housing numbers go up even more.
They either don't understand the primary cause of the recent rise or they just don't care. They admitted they'd cap immigration numbers but that was a lie. They gave it 2 more years of increase, capping it on the election year... which would increase after if they manage to win (which thankfully is looking like that's not possible).
@@CanadianEhHole its a trade off between housing or our birth rate issues which have now been temporarily solved for the next 10 years. This has real consequences as this is one of the contributors to demand as we have a huge retiree class and the long term effect of ineffective interest rates when you have sustained demand from this group as they sit in their homes and don't transfer intergenerational wealth

I really don't care about the second part. Houses are meant to be lived in. I, personally, don't want them to be investments. It's one of the core necessities, which should be kept as far as possible from capitalism in my opinion.
Honestly, I'm really jazzed about the plan to honour rent payments in one's credit score. (And you asked a good question re: housing investment, and I really appreciated Trudeau's response - housing as an investment for retirement, not "going to the moon"). Also, Trudeau's response at 13:22 re: why invest in Canada and not the States, giving a recent and solid example, is great to see (sobering to remember that having a relatively stable political body compared to the US - for now - makes for a better investment). Great interview! It's nice to hear Trudeau in a one on one where his airs aren't quite as put up, as they say.
Bankers don't lend to the producers, they lend to real estate brokers who buy up land making them scarce and more expensive then they "flip" the houses by selling them at a profit.
The number of houses on the market increases and the price falls as they become less scarce causing a price crash.
The obvious solution is to stop bankers from lending to stock and real estate brokers and for them to invest in the actual productive economy to increase growth of the economy.
Unfortunately moat politicians are funded by these bankers and they want to keep this ponze scheme going.
then build more houses, canadians need to invest more in the construction industry, if this was japan korea or china they would have built a bunch more houses by now to solve the issue, in fact housing is a depreciating asset in those countries

Congrats bagel! Big win. This is also the best interview I’ve seen of Trudeau in a while. No 30 sec sound bites but an actual interview.
He is constantly slammed in the media (including social media), and he wasted taxpayers' dollars calling that last election, but I remember watching him in the debates and he sounded like the grown-up surrounded by bickering children. I can't really stand watching his sound bites, though, he sounds so fake and never gives a straight answer to anything. I know many Canadians are not happy with him, but he's not as bad as they make him out to be, either, and I feel that if people really want a change in leadership, the competition has to step up its game.

I can't see the current USA Republican candidate being as well spoken and direct as PM Trudeau was. Great job.
Neither Republican nor Democrat I would say. I think Bernie would be the exception, but the way he got conned twice by the DNC is one of the reasons that made me lose faith in US politics and made me choose to move to Canada instead.

One thing I wish was focused on would be asking him if all of these problems for Canadians occur, who's been the one in office for 9 years? The housing situation has been known about for years but this is really the only time he's talking about it or making policy to address it, and coincidentally it's near election time and the 1st time when Trudeau is massively down in the polls, seems like only now he is actually showing some semblance of listening to what the average Canadian has been complaining about for years now. If this is so important to him, why hasn't he done anything in the 9 years he's been in office up until now? No hate just my 2 cents

He isn't grounded at all. He's all talking points, completely scripted at all times. Go look at his video where he talks about drinking water from paper bottles. That lasted 1 planned press conference. He's never been seen again with those bottles after he was made fun. He does what his advisors tell him to do. Poll numbers look bad? Switch off to a different strategy.
Old clip of him and his now ex-wife talking to one another, I believe when he was entering politics, and he spoke as if being PM was destined for him, that it's his divine right. Even his ex-wife had to try to take him down a notch or 2 in the moment.
Very few politicians are grounded but Trudeau is one of the furthest from it.

Ok, I've seen Trudeau give interviews in the past months in CBC and Global. He feels a lot more comfortable and confident here (probably because his earlier interviews were before the budget announcement). However, what he's conveniently not acknowledging is that the housing chrisis happened under 8 years of his rule and (aside from increasing supply) all his affordability measures like 30 yr mortgages are only going to drive home prices. His government doesn't let foreclosures happen and for the housing market to crash. This, of course, may be a good thing if you're a home owner (Majority of Canadians ARE home owners). But if you're a home buyer the expectation seems to be that the government will try to bring your monthly payments to a manageable level without affecting real estate price growth. As unhappy as I'm with Trudeau, he's probably better than other parties. Big fan of his $10 child care plan.
Immigration is the main cause of the current exacerbation of the housing crisis. Not sure about Canada but in the UK, which has also doubled and tripled their immigration numbers in recent years, there was a recent report that said 89% of their current housing shortage is due to their net migration numbers. Also doesn't help that they have only a few economic hubs, similar to Canada.

When he says bagels from either St-Viateur or Fairmont, he is brilliantly saying 1) Montreal rules for Bagels (which is just true), and brilliantly 2) sidestepping the biggest point of contention in Montreal: which is better, St-Viateur Bagels or Fairmont Bagels. Wow dude, this is awesome. Very happy for you. I understand its not going to be as technical, but having this on your resume will open doors. Maybe you can do more of these types of interviews with some economics professors or economic policy makers.

I was initially suspicious when you mentioned the subscript as that can often be used cynically to undercut an interviewee, but you really did it in a respectful manner that provided factual context to the PM's comments. It is especially helpful for those of us south of the border not so familiar with the details of Canadian tax law.

Not being Canadian myself, I sympathize with those who have endured Prime Minister Trudeau's leadership and its perceived detrimental effects on the Canadian economy over an extended period.
Regarding the video and my observations as a visitor, Canada appears to be lagging behind in various aspects such as job-market dynamics, innovation, and technology, seemingly reminiscent of the 1970s. There are notable concerns including a significant housing bubble, disproportionately low wages, a concerning level of general population education, and substantial expenses associated with supporting immigrants, many of whom seem to have minimal or even adverse impacts on the Canadian economy.
My interest waned after hearing Trudeau's response to the initial question, particularly when he defined the middle class solely by feeling and self-recognition as being middle-class. Middle class is defined solely by income levels. This moment served as a stark realization for me, suggesting potential challenges ahead for the Canadian economy, and this interview being an election campaign for Trudeau, and nothing more.
I appreciate the opportunity to view this video as it has provided valuable insights.

2. There’s no “middle class”. Only working class and investor class.
3. “Cut down the forest and put them in tin boxes.” Answer should’ve been responsible bureaucratic streamlining.
4. Pop investment bubble. I actually agree with this, but it is a redistribution of wealth.
5. The rich don’t pay for things with taxes (sovereign currency). The government is taking money out of the economy to hedge inflation. They’re decreasing the money supply through the 1%. I agree.
6. “Paying down debt” is an oxymoron. Deficits are in people’s bank account…and bank reserves.
7. Social program rhetoric is good. I don’t believe one word.
8. Financial literacy = MMT. Inflation vs. Production Capacity. Until we understand that, these politicians can SPIN like a figure skater.

@@xPhilxHC I wish he did nothing about it. "Nothing" would imply he hasn't made it worse either but his doubling of the already high Harper-level immigration numbers has completely destroyed the Canadian housing market.
The UK has a slightly worse housing situation and a recent report stated 89% of their housing shortage is because of net migration (and just like Canada, is the highest its ever been in their entire history).
