Trudeau, Poilievre debate affordability, carbon tax: “Why are Canadians so hungry?”

  • During question period in the House of Commons on Wednesday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre hotly debated the country’s affordability crisis and what’s being done to make life more affordable.
Following the recent release of data about food bank usage in Canada, Poilievre asked Trudeau: “Why is it that Canadians who can't feed themselves have to keep feeding his morbidly obese government?”
Trudeau said social programs like the senior dental care plan and school lunch programs will help Canadians. However, Poilievre criticized the school lunch program, claiming zero meals have been served.
“If government programs were really going to solve the problem he caused, then why are Canadians so hungry?” Poilievre asked.
Poilievre also took aim at carbon pricing, reiterating his claims that it contributes to rising costs of living. He asked, “If it [carbon tax] gets that high and people are all starving in the streets, will that stop the forest fires?” Trudeau defended the policy, claiming rebates help Canadians while fighting climate change.

What the hell does child care and senior dental have to do with finding a place to live an affordable place to live and buying groceries at the grocery store? This man is so out of touch with reality. It makes my head spin. We as a country spend so much money on idea. Thinking than actual results, we need to stop with the middle man and come up with an I. Dea, that's not gonna cost an arm in a lag. And we need to stop with the Red Tape. And maybe it's not just the carbon tax. That's the problem you want to know what the real problem is when you go to work and your paycheck literally is. $200 short or even more depending on how much you make each year. Because the government is that greedy. That is what we need to be looking at is Payday tax. I know.
People that lose literally almost $2000 a month, just in taxes. Yes, they make a lot. But by the time you you bring home your wages, you don't bring home enough things. That's why people have to work 2 jobs. You shouldn't have to work 2 jobs to pay your rent and buy groceries.

Spare us the Conservative conspiracy theories, cherrypicking, and disinformation. The WEF is a forum for discussion - no decisions are taken there. The only people who should be afraid of it are people who are afraid of the exchange of ideas.
The WEF was simply summarising an essay written in 2016 by Danish politician Ida Auken titled "Welcome to 2030. I own nothing, have no privacy, and life has never been better." It described life in an unnamed city in which the narrator does not own a car, a house, any appliances, or any clothes, and instead relies on shared services for all of his daily needs. As Auken noted - she intended the essay to start discussions about technological development. She wasn't presenting a radical concept, as the principles of the sharing economy are not new, radical, or nefarious, they're an established and growing socio-economic system whereby consumers share in the creation, production, distribution, trade and consumption of goods, and services.
This is an example of how many people on the right cherrypick and distort things for ideological reasons. It's bad faith discourse. Another example is how Conservatives continually criticize Trudeau for saying "the budget will balance itself " - when Trudeau's full sentence was "the commitment needs to be a commitment to grow the economy, and the budget will balance itself." Ronald Reagan and Stephen Harper said very similar things.

I've honestly believe that we need to BA together to get the government to put regulations around renters. And also landlords, landlords should not be allowed to charge what they're charging for rent, especially when half of these places are households and they don't even want to fix the places. I honestly believe that every landlord should have to register their apartments and then. They get audited and if they're not safe because a lot of these places that they're renting are not even illegal or they're not safe for people to be living in, they should be registered. People that are renting should have to register themselves. So that way, the government knows where they're renting and they can keep an eye on the landlords. So that way they're not price gouging people. I hear All The Time. Landlords complaining that their renters don't want to pay the rent after a month or 2. No wonder they don't want to because the rents so d*** high. Maybe if they lowered the rent, maybe they would get half decent people in there but would stay there and actually pay their rent.

Our carbon tax is one of the highest in the world, and all it really does is export and increase emission while gutting the Canadian economy.
Foreign producers have a competitive advantage compared to local producers thanks to the carbon tax, this leads consumers to buy more imports which have more shipping emissions. The countries these products are being manufactured in don't use nearly the same amount of green energy or have any emission standards. As a result more emissions and worse emission are created in the creation of these foreign products than would have been created in Canada.

By Canadian law - all revenues from the carbon price are returned to the province in which they were raised, with 10% going into funds to help small businesses, schools, hospitals and municipal governments cut their own emissions and 90% going to families through income tax rebates.
Economists agree a price on pollution is the cheapest way to reduce emissions with the least amount of harm to the economy. The largest ever study proves that it work at lowering fossil fuel emissions growth rates. Poilievre refuses to say how he will reduce emissions at a lower cost. That's because he can't reduce emissions at a lower cost - and never intends too.

@@John-ky1ry Canadians who earn less than $250,000 per year get more back in carbon rebates than they pay in carbon tax. No surprise then that Poilievre's plan to axe it - would benefit the wealthy.
As has been shown - record windfall profits by the fossil fuel industry are the main reason that gas prices are so high. You're okay with that?
Sweden's carbon tax, the highest in the world and the backbone of its climate policy, has been a resounding success - helping Sweden lower its emissions 29% since being introduced in 1991.

Now they intend to add another 60 Billion in new spending in 2024, all while they kill the middle class, doctors, veterinarians, dentists & chiropractors with their 67% Tax on small Business! Imagine not qualifying for UI, CPP, OAS even if you wished to, and then the only avenue to retirement allowed by the government is set to be destroyed by Communist levels of Capital Gains.... There is no Generational Fairness in taking 67% retirement funds from a Canadian who worked 40 years to accumulate wealth while still paying 30+% on savings and earnings in taxes , the then give this wealth to someone who potentially has not worked a day in their life!
