Great example of how the wick response to different fragrances, and dyes. I must admit that I do get caught up in the PERFECT Candle but I do agree with your statement of a SAFE candle is a better candle for our customers. I was beating on the peach ( Red ) to come through at the end. Glad it did turned out well. Keep making these down to earth video's.
This was so informative and helpful - thank you for taking the time to show us the full process because now I know I’m not crazy! I used to think “oh that’s a great flame!” on the first burn and then near the middle of the jar, the flames gets way too high! L
Hey, I know this is an older video, but can you tell me if mushrooming is a bad thing? I have been buying wicks from a company that say it is perfectly ok. I would love to know your thoughts. Thank you for supplying great content.😊
Maybe I’m wrong, but I’ve read that you want to achieve full melt pool on first burn in 2 to 3 hours. If the wick is too small for the jar, it won’t reach full melt pool. If wick is too big, the depth of the melt pool will be big and the flame will flicker and be high. 🤷🏻♀️ I could be mistaken. Either way, I don’t use cotton wicks. lol wooden wicks are so much easier.
I’ve heard wood wicks are easier 😅 It’s just what I’ve learned from the guys at California candle supply and the coconut wax FB group that you shouldn’t reach full melt pool with the first burn because then it will be way too hot once it reaches the middle of the jar. Again this is just something I’ve been testing and what I base my testing off of. But I know everyone is different :) I have seen too many candles that “explode” because they were over-wicked and I would rather create a safe candle than a perfect candle ❤️
Hi Erica.. l like your video and I would like to ask you a question.. since these candles are smaller than a 3" size jar, I was wondering if the 4 hours time that you burned for is too long? Just asking.. I was thinking 3 hours maybe just fine since they are less than 3". I would like your feed back it help with my experience of crafting a good candle.
Great video and so detailed! You mentioned that since the chocolate one was mushrooming, that maybe these wicks aren't the best for this wax and container. Does that mean you'd prefer to find one wick size for all the FO's? Cause what if the chocolate just needs a smaller wick size like a CD 5 or something? I know it would be so convenient to find one wick that works for all the FO's but so far that hasn't been my experience with coco 83 testing. A wick that works for vanilla for example, doesn't work as well for rose so I have to do separate testing completely. Maybe I'm making it too hard
Hi Erica I need some serious help I am making candles for a popup event. I used coconut apricot cd6 or cd 7 was recommended for the size jar i use with th6 it left wax on the sides of the jar but a thin layer i tried cdn7 and it seemed to not leave much wax around the jar but what i was conceearned about was that te jar was a little warmer than i wanted and the flame whas not high but bounced around a bit
Honestly I would say it’s pretty comparable! If not maybe a little bit better, but I would have to do more testing to know for sure :) Thank you so much for watching!! ❤️
At what temperature do you throw your fragrance oil in with wax and in your jars? I’m having some confusion as I see people put it lower than the pouring temperature it says online! Help pleaseee love your videos 💜💜
I'm just start to think about opening a candle business, can you tell me at the end, which wax perform better at cold & hot throw either soy or coconut?
I find that any candle or fragrance will have a good scent throw for a small room like a bathroom or small bedroom... how is the scent throw for a larger room like an open livingroom/kitchen? tia :)
Cool burn test and really educational as you know I love coconut 83 and wondering if you recommend the wax and would this be a good starter kit for a beginner?
I had done this kit a few weeks ago and the same thing happened with one of the scents where it was drowning from the start. I never even thought about testing in the bathroom 🙈 lol I usually test in my living room because i want a strong HT. Maybe my expectations are too high 🤷🏼♀️ lol have you tested in your living room? Or usually smaller areas.
Yes I’ve tested in my living room before! But I mainly like to test in the bathroom :) And woah that’s crazy that you had almost the same results with one of the scents! Testing can be so challenging 😅
Yes it was interesting to see lol and yes So so challenging 😩 but your videos are still very helpful! Lol I’m extremely impatient. Seeing yours helps me want to just take it easy 😂😂 and the whole thing about the melt pool helped me too. I like the wax I bought more. However, I think for the hot weather is not very good for shipping. It’s gets very sweaty in NYC heat lol. Trying to try my own blends with the soy 10 to see.
I’ve seen so many people say that the diameter of the room will determine if the HT fills the room. I can hardly smell anything in my living space unless I go upstairs and smell from the balcony 😫. Perhaps I need a larger candle to truly test a large living area. In my room or bathroom the HT is amazing
I used ECO wicks per the pdf I purchased from Jeff Standley for the virgin coconut soy I’m currently testing. I like to understand different processes. In your testing process you choose not to achieve a full melt pool on the initial burn. So, you only burn your candles in two hour increments, do I understand that correctly? Could you please explain why you do not allow your candles to achieve a full melt pool? I like to consider everyone’s process and theory behind it. Thank you for making and sharing this video, Erica! 💗🕯
I actually heard from a fellow candle making friend that she suggested to use eco wicks with this coconut wax. And no I burned them in 3.5-4 hour increments (I just chose to update you guys at around 2 hours to show you what it looked like ☺️) And I have learned from many other experienced candle makers, and from the guys over at cal candle supply that you don’t want to achieve a full melt pool after the first few burns. The reason is because if the wick is big and hot enough to reach full melt pool at the top of the candle, then as it burns down lower in the jar it will become WAY too hot. This is why I always preach having a safe candle instead of a “perfect” candle. I’ve seen many posts that people’s candles burst because the flame is waaayy too hot and it’s way too over wicked. That’s just my theory that I’ve been going with ☺️ Thank you so much for watching!!
@@beyoutifullyunique03 yes tested coco83 and it tunnels with woodwick as it is to soft. I am going to experiment with blends soon. Maybe add half c6 or 10% votive wax. Cold throw was great though
I have watch several of your videos since 9am I really want to get into to this so right now I’m just in taking the info so far this video was really informative an I must add I purchase a lot of candles from major companies already established an I kid you not I wonder if they waste this much time in preparation which I don’t think so.. I purchased 11 large candles in December from bath an body an need to say by time December comes again I have maybe 4 left just depending what I have notice is the candles burn really fast an they never burn all the way I would say I got a bad batch but I had several different kind saying this to say thanks for the information I never knew it was such a thing the way a candle burn is wrong or right.. so it’s really funny the things you learn an think back... I wish I success young lady an I have been watching these videos wondering why no one teaching is just saying ok buy this wick with this jar this seems to b a headache but I’m enjoying your videos
So I’ve heard conflicting options on this. However, from what I heard is that you don’t want to have the wick create a full melt pool within the first burn because then as it burns lower in the vessel, it will burn way too hot (because candles always burn hotter the lower they go) I strive for almost a full melt pool within the first two burns, and then have the level out and melt down the sides after that. However, I’m still learning! I’ve only had experience using two wicks because of the jars I currently use. However, right now I’m testing out one wicks in my tins and I’m trying to get it right!
It’s because if it’s hot enough to create a full melt pool after the first burn then that means it’s going to be WAY too hot once it reaches the middle of the jar
I talked about it briefly in my 2nd candle making q&a video! I have reservations about talking about it because I’m not a legal professional and it’s different for every state!
right!! I was thinking the same thing. It’s crazy what wick placement, wick length when you light it, and FO can all play a part in how a candle performs!

I'm confused as to why you are testing it because if you were testing against how well your own candles perform as an example these would never compare. You make your candles a specific way which you chose not to do with these. I always thought these were meant more for the hobbyist. If you made these exactly the way you do yours that would have been a more comparable result.

Has anyone tried the the C-6 Coconut wax? Which coconut would you recommend, C-6 Naturewax or 83 Coconut Wax?
Coco 83 is a true coco wax. C6 is soy wax with 10% or less coco. It's a little cheaper. I get my coco83 tomorrow so cant wait to compare HT.
