The tapping was pretty scary lol, fair play! As an alternative, you can use the dimple on the end of the tap to help center the tap. Keeping your x/y, raise the chuck and put in a lathe/dead center bit, and then manually tap using that center for downward pressure - if you follow
Oh, and you can use the same method for putting the helicoil in square

Glad it's not just me who looses bolts. Excellent vid!

At 14:14 No, no and NO! Youre not going the wrong way. You're using the wrong drill bit! Try a good quality left hand drill bit. Drill a hole - 50% of the bolt size, and use plenty of penetrating oil. Go to a drill bit size, right below the thread inner diameter and push gently - then firmly, until the bolt comes loose, and starts to walk its way up the threads.
And, if that doesn't work. Since You already have a mill present, why not use a carbide end mill to remove most of the bolt - and pick out the thread spiral with a pair of pliers? A 1000 GBP CB750 head won't be the same thing with the helicoil in it....

The last comment..... I'm restoring Kawasakis from early 70s. There's no way I'm putting a helicoil on my bikes. After all, I'm not silly You know!

I'd rather have the thread hole welded up, and re-threaded.

I think those hobby milling machines are all originally made by SIEG and modified a little between brands. I have one of their small lathes resold by Axminster and they're pretty competent. I've used it to make lost bushings and even make a steel drill guide for when I snapped an exhaust header bolt!

I wouldn't try drilling a 3mm pilot hole into that with my drill bits, 5mm at least. dead impressed with the ones you used though. :)

I usually fire up the Tig welder and build up a stalagmite until it got above the hole. Then weld on a nut. Back her out with a wrench or even an impact gun. If you weld upside down then it's a stalagmite.
Also it $50 if you bring it to me first
If you already buggered it the $100
If a friend of yours buggered it then $150😜

I don't see the purpose of the ti-al nitride bits. That's a wear coating which is used on cuntsten targlide. It's the carbide that's doing the cutting. Carbide is a bit risky if you don't have a rigid setup cus they shatter. I've had success with cobalt bits, saves me resharpening HSS /chinesium over and over.
When are you going to do an oil video? :P

If they work for you then that's all that matters in the end. I'd like some nice pricey dormer/presto bits but I really can't justify it.

i would have tried a left handed drill bit

Me too - the Head is perfectly set up on the Table, start with a 2-3mm pilot hole (obviously must be dead centre of the Bolt Stub) then use a LH Drill bit in gradual stages if possible to drill out the Bolt material and end up with a maximum diameter just short of the Bolt Shaft minus the thread. The remains of the Bolt shaft should spin out without any damage to the original Thread.
