  • In this episode our host John Doran sits down with former Verve frontman Richard Ashcroft ahead of the release of his fourth solo album 'These People’. Ashcroft discusses fatherhood, what he misses about the North, and Bitter Sweet Symphony.
    In John’s own words:
    Today I am speaking to one of the biggest, and arguably most misunderstood pop stars of last quarter of a century: Richard Ashcroft.
    His band The Verve were one of the most unlikely success stories of the 1990s, predicted by no-one bar him. Nearly twenty years after the phenomenal success of Urban Hymns, Ashcroft has become ambiguous about fame, but as this rare interview proves, he has more to say than ever.

    Richard has a heavy soul man. Verve has some of the most Joyous and depressing songs I ever heard. Real British "country" music. Noel wrote the bright side, and Richard wrote the dark.

    He's 100% spot on about working on other issues before taking antidepressant such as addiction to substances. But if you're in an emergency situation do what you have to do and save your life. Antidepressants saved mine when I was suicidal at 18 and I was on them for 20 years. But age and sobriety has given me the strength I need to handle this condition on a daily basis. Mind you the depression started when I was 13 and totally sober (it is a genetic inheritance that has been aggravated by hypothyroidism).

    Great interview. As a fan of Richard, I appreciate the way you have approached the interview John, and made him feel at ease and open as this. Most interviewers care more to get the soundbite than the content, and try to challenge him with silly cliches, which you funnily twisted in the last question.

    in Urban Hymns I found a nurture, another person with the same thoughts as me, I found a friend. thank you Richard

    Im an American. Oasis brought me to The Verve. I really liked Northern Souls and Urban Hymns. I've always wanted his solo career to blow me away, but it never really did. Remember when 'Song For The Lovers' came out and it stoked me. Album dropped off after that for me. Just my opinion. Good stuff though.

    • @brianchidester3334
      @brianchidester3334 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Me the same (Oasis to the Verve). I liked shoegaze enough to know the major artists then but not enough to get into things like "A Storm of Heaven" or "Giants Steps" by the Boo Radleys until much later. Hence I started with "Urban Hymns" and was never blown away by anything else the band or Ashcroft as a solo artist did before or after. The one thing I remember about all those Britpop bands back then was how they had the same logo from album to album, single to single, and I took that as a sign of good taste, actually, until the band Travis came around. Then it was, like, okay, enough of this shit. How many different songs can we get with the chorus being about the sun and the sky and the morning?

    What he's saying round 12:00 is 100% true. I struggled with mental health for years, suicide attempts etc. I got diagnosed bipolar, tried the therapy and the drugs but it got worse. I then made the decision to stop the meds, stop the booze, stop the cocaine... and exercise(the mania helped me through this tbf) I have never been happier in all my life. This was the best thing i ever did. I'm getting on with my life like a normal person. I have a great new job and in two years time I will own my own home. Obviously I still have ups and downs but its less extreme and a whole lot more manageable. I do however smoke weed to calm the mania but i choose my natural medicine very carefully, I don't smoke just any weed.
    Mental/physical stimulation
    Improve your diet
    Cut out booze, drugs and meds
    Exercise
    This fixed my life.

    Ashcroft is a genius lyricist but it’s unfair slagging off McCabe, Si Jones and Pete for not contributing for Urban Hymns. McCabe’s touch changed the album and made it very unique.

    I agree that Urban Hymns is probably the best Britpop album tied in my opinion with (What's the Story) Morning Glory? As for Ashcroft on his own, I haven't heard any of his older solo work, but I have heard his latest album and I think it's not that bad. Richard Ashcroft is probably one of the best singers ever. I would put him up there with the rock legend vocalists of the twentieth century. I think this interview has really helped me understand Ashcroft and his story in music. So, I respect him and his music and I don't hate him. I think he's doing just fine right now.

    He can slag off McCabe all he likes, but he never made a record as good as The Verve's without Nick. The Verve first three albums were nearly perfect.

    • @dane279
      @dane279 8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      +karatechop123 Ashcroft occasionally makes a good song. The Verve consistently made great albums. I think Nick just made everything sound cool and edgier on UH and that's lost on Ashcroft's solo output.
