I spent four years as a mechanic then crew chief on these birds stationed with 1st Air Commando Wing at Hurlburt Field FL.
They were dirty, oily and downright noisy. But man they were awesome. I flew the run from Florida to Panama several times over the course of my duty there. Some of my old pictures of them are buried in a box somewhere. What great memories.

I flew in the plastic nose of a recon A-26 as a CAP Cadet at Myrtle Beach Air Base in 1947. One of the greatest thrills I've had in many years of love of airplanes. A low level pass at high speed while hanging so far forward in that clear bubble was scary for a moment but then just spectacularly exciting for a 16 year old. Undoubtedly the fastest prop plane I've flown in.

I don't normally comment on TH-cam. But watching this, I had to. I love planes. I've built models of them all my life. The very first plane model I completed (and wasn't a ball of model glue).. the first one I bothered to paint, the first one I was truly proud of.. was a Douglas A-26 Invader. Its still one of the most beautiful aircraft (imho).
Watching this was like I was 10 again and building that model. Kudos to you and your restoration.

Nice aircraft and outstanding restoration work1.
I received my first training as an airman in B-26, I remember well, I miss the roaring sound of the Pratt and Whitney engines, the smoke and all that stuff in the flightline.
Congratulations to all of you. Thank you very much for bringing back this beautiful bird in -flight condition again.

Excellent job! I grew up with the sound of piston props flying overhead, first in Hawthorne, CA and then near Moffett Naval Air Station in the SF Bay Area. Even today the sound brings a smile to my face that lasts for hours.

I spent years working on the A-26 "Yer ol' dad" in Everett and Arlington Washington. Our museum tried to get it going but funding and leadership fell out. I don't know what happened to it but this was truly beautiful to see since ours didn't make it. Thank you for this amazing video!

    • @aeroangrymoose
      @aeroangrymoose 8 ปีที่แล้ว

That I dont know I'll look for an N number and try to get the ownership history. It was in Everett for a few years before we knocked the wings off and moved it. Somebody had it shipped out a few years ago though. Would be neat. She was never built as a bomber though, no structure in it for a turret, bomb bay, or pylons at all. Make a sweet private plane! :)

I grew up on a small airport and we had an A26, B25, B17, P51, P38 and a static display F 86 Saber Jet. My favorite was the A 26 Intruder and use to love talking to the owner which had flown the A 26 in Korean war. Them 8 50 cal gun's in the nose could do a lot of damage he told me. I learned to fly there in Cessna 172's before going to Vietnam and haven't flown since but I sure miss hearing them warbirds take off.

Back at Detroit City Airport, there was an A-26 standing at an access strip in a back area of the airport. That was years ago, and I don't know if it's still there. It was there up until the early 90s. I used to drive past that place a lot. Hopefully, someone bought it and rebuilt it.

The 4:32 mark gives a perfect example as to "Flying" the aircraft off the ground instead of pulling the nose up on take off. The A-26 has at that time was called the High-Speed wing design. Because of this and the flap/aileron design, the pilot was required fly onto an off a runway without attempting to flair at all.

This is one of the best videos I've seen about a restored airplane and one of my favorite airplanes, as well. The videography was outstanding and the airplane was gorgeous. BUT, why did they screw with the aspect ratio of the video. This literally ruined the experience for me and was totally unnecessary, as far as I'm concerned. All the people look like squat gnomes and everything round, like tires and engine nacelles look squashed. This could have been exceptional if not for someone trying to 'fix' something that didn't need fixing.

How did you verify this was an actual A, varient instead of regular B 26? There were many B26s and B 25s sold postwar that were used as fast corporate transport aircraft. These corporate aircraft were extensively modified of course including fairing over of the glass nose. I know there were some of these misidentified as the attack versions of both as both were modified in the war, with an astonishing array and number of weapons, into excellent ground attack aircraft flying over altitude attack and bombing missions... Very successfully in the pacific Theatre. I've been unable to find these uses and modifications in the European Theatre however. That may partially be because the incredible dehavland mosquito filled that role quite nicely for both British and Americans. Plus the mosquito was a better aircraft than either the B25 or B 26 by most every measure. The Mosquito was faster than fighters, In fact fastest aircraft in the entire war until the ME262 and other jet and rocket powered craft appeared. It could carry the same bomb load as the B 17 flying fortress with only two crew members and had a much better accuracy record, maybe because most bomb runs were at low levels but the British had an excellent system on bombing that proved more accurate at the end of the war than the Norden bomb sight at high altitudes, it had greater ranges than the 25 or 26 and finally, but perhaps most important it had the lowest loss rate of any combat aircraft in the war even though it flew some of the most dangerous missions. Personally I don't know why America didn't simply make them under contract and fly them, or twice as many even, instead of the B17. Since it could deliver the same four thousand pound bomb load as the fortress but it was far faster, two missions could have been flown per day, perhaps using different crews, in the same time frame as a single fortress mission doubling tonnage dropped. I can sort of understand the Lancaster and Liberator as both had greater bomb loads than the fortress. Just has always seemed to me like that would have been a better way to go with far less crew dead and more bombs dropped speeding up the wars end. Then again im not a professional at air combat and tactics so maybe there's something I don't know that would have made that unworkable. I imagine politics would have been the primary barrier to that however, sad as it is when politics even in war are more important than the yens of thousands of crewmen who gave their lives in daylight Bombing in fortresses. But that's the way humans are and that's one of the main reasons we will always be plauged with war and have to spend far far more of our precious treasure on better ways to destroy and kill than on the truly great things like space and ocean exploration, colonizing other planets, eradicating cancer, Parkinson's, and other diseases.

We had one of these land on our Army air base in RoK just after Vietnam was over but it had been re-engined with turboprops and seemed to be fitted out as some sort of recon job judging by the camera ports and antennas. Another one landed just after dark but had multiple cannons mounted in the nose and hardpoints with ordnance hanging from them. Neither one had any marking whatsoever. We had to guard them overnight and they left just before dawn. The brass who saw them off told us we'd never seen them, they didn't exist. CIA or ???? We decided we didn't want to know.

Ive never even heard of an A26 converted to turbo props, that would be a pretty
good feet of engineering involving several people so someone else has to know
about the aircraft you are describing. Would just like to know who did the
      conversion.

***** They were B-26K's stationed in Thailand. Unmarked usually. They flew ground attack missions in VN. Stock Korean war planes completely rebuilt and wing strengthened with extra arms. Quite a transformation of the A. They were Counter Invaders. A well known "secret" force not supposed to exist. Known as "Nimrods".

Chaz Pagano Ahhhh, nice to know a name for them. Like I said, I don't recall any insignia either on the planes or the flight suits. Since they appeared to be covert I'd guess the engine conversion was done quietly in some friendly country(Taiwan??) while adding the armament and sigint/photo recon stuff could be done in-house as there were certainly enough aviation personnel (for a price) floating around that part of the world - the US doesn't/didn't have a corner on all the expertise....... Looked deadly as hell just sitting there in the revetments. I was just glad they seemed to be 'ours'.

You cannot compare reactors and engines. Enginses have a music, not reactors.
An Allison is not a Rolls Royce.
Beethoven is not Bach or Mozart.
    P51 also,...
