    Great job, Josh. One thing I learned VERY quickly when using my landscape rake behind my tractor, while driving forward: Don't drive too fast! Those tines will engage some stuck rocks, and the tines act just like a slingshot. When they engage a stone that "cocks the trigger," and then lets go, you get pelted with gravel, and if the rock it big enough, it'll bean you in the head, and damage the lights and paint on the tractor! Those rocks really launch. I found that if the rocks in the driveway are not loose enough, that is, loosened up by the tines of my box blade first, then it's better to use the landscape rake spun around 180 degrees and drive backwards. That shoot's the rocks the other way. It's also easier to slow way down.

    Josh, Glad this video came up! I live a rural sub-division of 14 of 1 to 20 acre lots with a looong gravel road. I'm sharing this video with my neighbors who give me heck every time I do maintenance on the road... City Folks living on the outskirts of a Farming town! The first third of the road just get hammered and I've dropped the rippers to breakup the pot holes and bout gave 3 neighbors a heart attack :) But when I got finished the road was Sweet! But never a Thanks??

    Great video. A contractor told me I couldn't reuse gravel piled up on the sides of my driveway because it had dirt and grass. He wanted to remove what was there and bring in clean gravel. That didn't seem logical so I searched youtube and found you doing exactly what I asked him to do.

    Back in the 1960's my maternal grandparents had a summer lake home in northern Minnesota. The driveway, all dirt and 150 yards long, was flat and did not drain well. It seemed like every spring it would rain hard and then the frost would come up. The driveway turned to mush. Getting a dump truck in was impossible due to the overhead power line going down the middle of the driveway. We hand shoveled that driveway endlessly every spring. Drainage was the key. The current owners of that property had the power line buried and are there full time, so the driveway stays firmly packed. I wish we had your knowledge and equipment back then.

    Hay Josh, For over 30 yrs I used a horse drawn grader adapted for a tractor to pull and it did an excellent job of grading over 2 miles of roadway's and lanes, because you did not get the ups and downs like you do with pulling a blade on the back of a tractor.

    In Texas we call it a box blade and we call his rippers scarfires. Another great way to level the road smooth as silk is a piece of 6' x 8' long 6 ga. chain link. Worked great for me.

    The equipment you have did a great job on that road and have your gravel where it should be. I have a box blade which came with my first tractor when I purchased it as part of a package deal and I love it. I have used it around my place, but it has been sitting for over a year now and is ready to be put back to work. I also have a landscaping rake which is on my second tractor for use in my yard. I currently have my bush hog on my first tractor and use the other implements attached to my second tractor as they isn't that large and I use the bush hog most to work my lawn or land back off the road away from my house for mowing.

      So this driveway is only 4 years old...typically I'll add rock as needed or have a thin layer of #57 dumped covering the entire drive once per year. Once you've got a good base you shouldn't have to add more rock after about 5 years. I've kinda gone to the extreme on how much rock we have here on our drive since I want to establish one heck of a base

    You know the East Coast is the only place where they call it number 57 first time I ever heard that I didn't know what the hell they were talking about. A member 1st time I went to Chicago for a construction company up there I went in for my interview and guide those a set of plans upon the table and is what gauge our those holes I told him, "I didn't have any idea" and he just got started to turn around and walk off and I said, "but if you are talking about the diameter they are three-quarters of an inch". He kinda grinned at me and said we going to have to learn our terminology, aren't we?

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer

    Does any one make a water filled roller to fit in back of your tractor? Yes, say a 3' diameter steel drum 6' wide filled with water would probably not be liftable (3.000 lbs) but you could fill it where to start smashing those larger rocks into the driveway, thereby making the gravel road last a lot longer. After doing the drive way, it would be necessary to drain the drum to transport it, or you could just roll it to a designated spot with gravel and leave it filled, ready to go next time.

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      well....ya don't need to invest in a roller when ya have a pickup truck that weighs 4000lbs my brotha...just roll over it appropriately after ya crown the drive

    Love the video, thank you! We have a driveway that has quite a grade to it. When we bought it, the driveway was quite rutted up. A neighbor leveled it for us. A few weeks later a heavy rain made those ruts again. We put taconite tailings on the driveway (it's in northern MN). They lock in place and worked well for a couple of years. We just had to put more tailings on it last year. I now have a tractor and am wondering if I can do this myself. Wondering how the box blade would work with the tailings. If I use the rippers, would that bring too much soil up into the mix?

    Nice vid! #57 limestone is a good base in the mountains of Tennessee, but one cannot climb hills hardly at all until packed down. You'll just spinout and have to get a tow up the hill. Important to note that this should be a fine cover, not 2" thick. Add crusher run limestone/dust after. Nearly turns into concrete after a few rains causing less #57 gravel to slide out to the sides over time. Just a different method for mountain folk.

    Josh! Thanks for the video. I was wondering about the 3pt landscape rake on the Ventrac!
    I tried to order but the link and coupon code didn’t work. Any suggestions?
