Have been revisiting metal of late (more of an Indie-Alt dude these days), and having grown up in the birth of thrash, black metal etc., most of what I fall back into are the Slayers, Mercyful Fate, Kreator and so on. However, I've wanted to broaden my horizons and see what I'd missed out on in the 2000's and beyond and this list was a GREAT start, thanks for it. Discovered some exceptional stuff here. Rock on :X
Crack the Skye and From Mars to Sirus obviously are two contenders. I see a lot of people agree. But i'll also add Fiction - Dark Tranquility, Come Clarity - In Flames ( Their best album after their pure MDM era), Mind Tricks - Disarmonia Mundi, Holographic Universe - Scar Symmetry. I mean there are a ton more, like you put it's hard to put such an incredible decade of metal into such a small list.
10- The Black Dahlia Murder- Miasma 09- Symphony X- Paradise Lost 08- Opeth- Blackwater Park 07- Queens Of The Stone Age- Songs For the Deaf 06- Mastodon- Blood Mountain 05- Dimmu Borgir- Death Cult Armageddon 04- Overkill- Killbox 13 03- Dream Theater- Train Of Thought 02- Angra- Temple Of Shadows 01- Nevermore- This Godless Endeavor
Colors is the most incredible and jaw dropping album I've ever had the pleasure of listening to in my life. Agalloch's the Mantle and Behmoth's the Satanist are right up there with it. I'm glad those were your two best records on this side of the century. I haven't listened to the other Agalloch record yet, but I'm definetely gonna give it a shot today.
Reign Supreme by Dying Fetus and Terrifyer by Pig Destroyer should get a mention too. Ashes of the Wake by Lamb of God and Blood Mountain by Mastodon, Jane Doe by Converge and Follow the Reaper by Children of Bodom... you're right... this list is impossible...
Personally Deadwing > Fear of a Blank Planet also I would have included: Brave New World - Iron Maiden (very surprised this wasn't on the list!) Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence Tool - Lateralus Mastodon - Crack the Skye Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor Gojia - From Mars to Sirius
I think one of the hardest parts about making a list like this is how do we define "greatness"? Is something great because of the quality of its compositions? Or is it great because of the influence it had over the genre? Are they the greatest because they're representative of the musical landscape at the time? Because to be honest, these lists would probably very different.
My personal list in no particular order 1. Agalloch - The Mantle (2002) 2. Celtic Frost - Monotheist (2006) 3. Edge of Sanity - Crimson II (2003) 4. Opeth - Ghost Reveries (2005) 5. Isis - Panopticon (2004) 6. Seventh Wonder - Mercy Falls (2008) 7. Sunn 0))) - Monoliths and Dimensions (2009) 8. Blind Guardian - A Night At The Opera (2002) 9. Tool - Lateralus (2001) 10. Katatonia - Night Is The New Day (2009) Honorable Mention - Ulver - Perdition City (2000) - I didn't put it on the main list because it's not technically metal but it's still amazing.
Great choices for number ones. Absolute masterpieces. Pale Folklore is actually my favourite from 99. Those 3 albums plus the White ep are staggering accomplishments. Untouchable.
Yay - I actually own 3 albums on this list...Fear of a Blank Planet, Blackwater Park & Ashes Against the Grain. Most of the rest I haven't even heard of, besides Orphaned Land & Celtic Frost.
Rammstein - Mutter, Orphaned Land - Mabool, My Dying Bride - The Dreadful Hours, Katatonia - The Great Cold Distance, Crowbar - Sonic Excess In Its Purest Form. I guess for me those are some of the ones I can think of.
I tried to make a list and it turns out to be my favorite albums of some of my favorite bands. I don't have time to argue about whether "core" is metal. If it is heavy and has attitude, I might buy it and like it. I couldn't get 10, because I double majored in biology and chemistry for nearly half of the 2000's. Ob Zen - Meshuggah Sacrament - Lamb of God The Formation of Damnation - Testament The End of Heartache - Killswitch Engage Jane Doe - Converge The Way of All Flesh - Gojira
In no particular order, mine are: Opeth - "Blackwater Park" Mastodon - "Blood Mountain" Between The Buried And Me - "Colors" Isis - "Panopticon" Isis - "Wavering Radiant" Cradle Of Filth - "Godspeed On The Devil's Thunder" Cradle Of Filth - "Midian" Fear Factory - "Archetype" Amon Amarth - "With Oden On Our Side" Ensiferum - "From Afar" Honorable Mention: The Sword - "Warp Riders" (Came out in 2010, not sure if it counts)
in no order Opeth - Blackwater Park Mastodon - Crack the Skye Behemoth - Evangelion Machine Head - The Blackening Celtic Frost - Monotheist Trivium - Ascendancy Lamb of God - Sacrament Slipknot - Iowa Marilyn Manson - Holy Wood Agalloch - The Mantle
Monotheist is a masterpiece and so is The Mantle. I didn't expect Green Carnation, Edge of Sanity or even Arcturus to make it to your top 10. I mean I have those albums and they are amazing, but I thought people in the USA would list SOAD, Mastodon, Tool and not some european progressive black - death albums, apart probably from Opeth. Great list anyway! Now I'm going to listen to the Communic album as I know nothing about them, I believe I'll like it a lot.
My list: 1)Opeth - Blackwater Park 2)Btbam - Colors 3)Mastodon - Crack The Skye 4)Agalloch - The Mantle 5)Tool - 10.000 Eyes 6)Avenged Sevenfold - City of Evil 7)Gojira - From Mars To Sirius 8)Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet 9)Mors Principium Est - Inhumanity 10)Mars Volta - Frances The Mute Honorable mentions: Sleep - Dopesmoker, Ihshan - angL, Rhapsody - Dawn of Victory, Kalmah - They Will Return, Slipknot - Iowa, Dillinger Escape Plan - Miss Machine
My personal list: 1) Theocracy - Mirror of Souls (2008) 2) Dream Theater - Train of Thought (2003) 3) Megadeth - Endgame (2009) 4) Sonata Arctica - Winterheart's Guild (2003) 5) System of a Down - Mezmerize (2005) 6) Stryper - Murder by Pride (2009) 7) Theocracy - Theocracy (2003) 8) Slipknot - Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) (2004) 9) Kreator - Enemy of God (2005) 10) Nightwish - Dark Passion Play (2007)
10) Gojira - The Way of All Flesh 9) Slayer - God Hates Us All 8) Protest the Hero - Fortress 7) Iron Maiden - Brave New World 6) Agalloch - The Mantle 5) Mastodon - Leviathan 4) Trivium - Shogun 3) Opeth - Blackwater Park 2) Gojira - From Mars to Sirius 1) Tool - Lateralus
Not too impossible imo (but definitely difficult) here's my list (as of now) from worst (or least favorite if you prefer) to best: 10 Converge Axe to Fall 9 Vektor - Black Future 8 Agalloch - The Mantle 7 Converge - Jane Doe 6 Drudkh - Blood in Our Wells 5 Windir - 1184 4 Slough Feg - Traveller 3 Shining - V 2 Weakling - Dead as Dreams 1 Electric Wizard - Dopethrone Hon mentions no order really: Slough Feg - Down Among the Deadman Wuthering Heights - Far From the Madding Crowd The Chasm - Farseeing the Paranormal Absym Slough Feg - Hardworlder Opeth - Blackwater Park The Angelic Process- Weighing Souls With Sand Reverend Bizarre - In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend Hammers of Misfortune - The August Engine Nokturnal Mortum - The Voice of Steel Agalloch - Ashes Against the Grain Darkspace- Darkspace III Destroyer 666 - Phoenix Rising Moonsorrow - Verisakeet Boris - - At Last - Angra- Temple of Shadows All hon mentions come from my personal top 500. Also kinda disagree with that porcupine Tree record being metal. Great lp, Has elements of metal, but it's definitely more on the rock side. One more thing I look forward to listing off the other decades, especially the 90s!

Zao - The Funeral of God (2004) (again, seriously underrated) 9. Isis - Panopticon (2004) 10. KIllswitch Engage Alive or Just Breathing should of been on that list, by far the most influential album from the 2000s, for better or worse, every song on that album is perfect
Here's mine: 10. YOB - The Illusion of Motion 9. Neurosis - The Eye Of Every Storm 8. Porcupine Tree - Fear Of A Blank Planet 7. Celtic Frost - Monotheist (2006) 6. Negură Bunget - OM (2006) 5. Never heard Communic. But Opeth and Nevermore? Guess it's time to start. Any band that gets compared to Nevermore is worth my time, and being compared to Opeth certainly doesn't hurt either.

Oh and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence by Dream Theater. Would have included more albums but then this list would be a billion paragraphs long soo..
gorgborg AHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA i mean to be fair, I think frantic was one of the better songs on the album. Songs such as invisible kid have to be one of the worst metal songs I’ve heard tho

Would have loved to see some records with the Voice of Rock - Jörn Lande. Ark - Burn The Sun (2001) is a master piece, Beyond Twilight -The Devil's Hall of Fame (2001) not far behind... Seriously, Burn the Sun is one of the greatest album of all time ^^ Katatonia did some great LPs in the 2000ies too. And In Flames.
Can someone in the comment section advise? I am checking out a lot of good music on Spotify, including some of the ones recommended by coverkiller lately, but it's hard to find a band with a transcendent vocalist that takes it to the next level. I'm missing Warrel Dane and while I'm not expecting a clone, I want to discover a vocalist that has me hooked like his voice did, like David Bowie's voice did. Any recommendations?
Try things like Dark Forest, Polaris (they’re core but they are the best at what they do), Judicator, Spoil Engine, Visigoth, Night Demon, Traitor, Ceremonial Castings, Johari, Skyfire, Ashes of Moon, Paladin, Svalbard (Try both the hardcore one and the black metal one), Deadspace, Withering Surface, Enbound, Lunar Shadows, Duskmourn, Grouper, The White Buffalo, Onirism, Feminazgul, Game Over and so many more. Hopefully I helped☺️
My top 10 (only 1 album from each band allowed) 1. Gojira - From Mars To Sirius 2. Megadeth - Endgame 3. Nile - Black Seeds Of Vengeance 4. Lamb Of God - Ashes Of The Wake 5. Rammstein - Mutter 6. Iced Earth - Horror Show 7. Behemoth - Demigod 8. Motörhead - Inferno 9. Cannibal Corpse - Kill 10. Tool - Lateralus
Ill name a few in nonparticular order: Judas Priest Firepower Black Sabbath 13 King Diamond House of God Twilight Force Tales of Ancient Prophecies Attic Santimonious Opeth Ghost Reveries. There maybe not 10 but some of my favorites.
Really interesting how 'The Blackening' by Machine Head was hyped up by the rock/metal press so much when it came out in 2007 and people were saying it was a masterpiece, the new Master of Puppets. Now looking at these choices for top 10 I can't see it anywhere, and barely on any other lists online. Is this because of Robb Flynn's recent behaviour? Or has the album just not aged that well? I personally think it's still awesome.
My top 2000s albums in no particular order: System of a Down - Toxicity Opeth - Ghost Reveries & Blackwater Park Mastodon - Leviathan, Blood Mountain, Crack the Skye Slipknot - Iowa Deftones - White Pony Trivium - Ascendancy Killswitcu Engage - Alive or Just Breathing Machine Head - The Blackening
The Blackening and Unto The Loucast are so fucking good. Machine has some bad albums, but like damn. They master the heavy and thrashy and Just a great balance of everything better then a majority of 2000s bands.
Bengie Macfarlane better than who exactly? The 2000s wasn’t exactly a stellar decade for thrash. Bands were diving more into death, black, prog and sludge metal. Machine head just wanted to play “heavy” beer-drinking thrash for their fans whereas the rest of the metal scene progressed. I can name you at least 20 bands better than Machine Head in the 2000s. Probably more.
frank unodostres Yeah, only the genre was originally called "heavy metal" instead of just "metal". It's only recently that the term "heavy metal" started to apply only for specific bands.
I think the meaning has been changing through time. Originally, (even before the term was coined) heavy metal was the common ground shared by the bands and/or songs that delivered a certain "heaviness" beyond the plain hard rock. Simplifying, heavy metal "before heavy metal" was Black Sabbath and a some songs by Deep Purple (Black Night, Speed King, Highway Star, ... ), Led Zeppelin (Whole lotta love, Communication Breakdown, ... ) and others. A few years later, bands like Judas Priest and the NWOBHM added the twin guitars attack, speed, etc that gave "classic" heavy metal its definitive form. But all this was before thrash and extreme metal in general. And now, after so many years an so many genres/subgenres/styles (many of which are even clearly kind of retro/revivalists) we must distinguish extreme metal (thrash, death, black, etc) from heavy metal (now understood as a "subgenre" of metal, maybe), which is the more classic heavy metal era, rock or prog-rock oriented metal: clean singing, vocal melodies, choruses, no blast beats, etc, etc. I guess the list in this video most likely refers to the latter (yet the presence of Agalloch confuses me a bit), so it doesn't make sense (like some people are claiming) to include Nile nor any other extreme metal band here.
By what standard is Porcupine Tree metal? Sure, they added some "heavy" guitars when they got to 'In Absentia,' but that didn't make them any less boring than they were before. They're just boring, louder.

Well i've got a few albums to check out. I'm surprised at the lack of Mastodon and Gojira, maybe they're too mainstream for you.
Personally Deadwing > Fear of a Blank Planet
also I would have included:

6. Seventh Wonder - Mercy Falls (2008)
7. Sunn 0))) - Monoliths and Dimensions (2009)
8. Blind Guardian - A Night At The Opera (2002)
9. Tool - Lateralus (2001)
10. Katatonia - Night Is The New Day (2009)
Honorable Mention - Ulver - Perdition City (2000) - I didn't put it on the main list because it's not technically metal but it's still amazing.
Lateralus should be 1# thou
Ob Zen - Meshuggah
Sacrament - Lamb of God
The Formation of Damnation - Testament
The End of Heartache - Killswitch Engage

Machine Head - The Blackening
Celtic Frost - Monotheist
Trivium - Ascendancy
Lamb of God - Sacrament
Slipknot - Iowa
Marilyn Manson - Holy Wood
Agalloch - The Mantle
Monotheist is a masterpiece and so is The Mantle. I didn't expect Green Carnation, Edge of Sanity or even Arcturus to make it to your top 10. I mean I have those albums and they are amazing, but I thought people in the USA would list SOAD, Mastodon, Tool and not some european progressive black - death albums, apart probably from Opeth. Great list anyway! Now I'm going to listen to the Communic album as I know nothing about them, I believe I'll like it a lot.
I knew Agalloch would get number one, which I definitely agree with

Every word you used to describe Colors basically describes every reason why it’s my favorite album of all time.

Seriously, Burn the Sun is one of the greatest album of all time ^^
Katatonia did some great LPs in the 2000ies too. And In Flames.
What about The Blackening from Machine Head?
Johnny DiedForOur Sins I know Right!
I would almost go as far as to say I despised Catharsis but I have to agree with you about the blackening it was such an amazing album.
Get a mic please!
no wolves in the throne room?
Can someone in the comment section advise? I am checking out a lot of good music on Spotify, including some of the ones recommended by coverkiller lately, but it's hard to find a band with a transcendent vocalist that takes it to the next level. I'm missing Warrel Dane and while I'm not expecting a clone, I want to discover a vocalist that has me hooked like his voice did, like David Bowie's voice did. Any recommendations?
Mike N tesseract. Check out hexes, nocturne, of matter, Juno.
Mike N Crimson Glory Dude. That’s all you need to know
Agent Fresco, Leprous, Rishloo, The Contortionist, Swans, Trees of Eternity, Scott Walker (he is pretty experimental with his voice)
You might like Beartooth, Killswitch Engage, Light the Torch, Lamb of God, maybe even Phinehas?

And Parallax II is the best album of the 2010's
TundraL5Z well I can't say no since I haven't heard it but for me it's Swans Seer (not a metal record per se much much darker then most)
Jeffrey Dotson Well it's my favorite album of all time, and Telos is a masterpiece of a song, so yea, i like this album a lot
TundraL5Z fair enough
Definitely BTBAMs best. Not sure if I'd say it's the best of the decade though. I'd probably give that to Citadel.
Nope, that would be Dvne’s Asheran
Great list, possibly, maybe.
From Mars to Sirius is one of the best albums of all time. Where is the love?
I want to make metal about puppies and bubbles now.
I Second this. Halford.... "Resurrection" Melts your FuckingFaceOff...
Name every single band in that thumbnail
Very prog heavy. I don't mind however.
My favourite album from the 2000’s is Brave New World
Ill name a few in nonparticular order: Judas Priest Firepower Black Sabbath 13 King Diamond House of God Twilight Force Tales of Ancient Prophecies Attic Santimonious Opeth Ghost Reveries.
There maybe not 10 but some of my favorites.
palavos 3 we're talking about albums from the 00s...
Yeaha.. JP will be there for the 20teens...So Should Saxon..I really Like Thunderbolt.
My top 2000s albums in no particular order:
System of a Down - Toxicity
Opeth - Ghost Reveries & Blackwater Park
Mastodon - Leviathan, Blood Mountain, Crack the Skye
Slipknot - Iowa
Deftones - White Pony

Machine Head - The Blackening
No particular order, Toxicity, From Mars to Sirius, Leviathan, Lateralus, Black Gives Way to Blue, Obzen.

I never heard any of these albums my favorite metal album of the 2000s would be
System of a Down toxicity

Paradox Collision Course🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Before I watch: we need: black water park, Jane Doe, Prometheus, Ashes of the Wake, Colors (although I personally dont think its all that good).
Good job fuckwit.
Orphaned Land are from Israel. You don't go to jail for releasing heavy metal albums in Israel. They weren't in any danger what-so-ever.
Dio- Master of the Moon
No All Shall Perish??
Ghost reveries is better than blp. by a good notch
ridiculous to talk about metal in 2000s without mention of Mastodon ..thats a huge fail !!
No Mastodon?
My favorite was dead as dreams by weakling
Where tf is obZen?!
LATERALUS
No machine head?
Machine head belongs nowhere near a “best of” list
the blackening is a phenomenal album despite the other garbage albums they've released.
Probably more.
heavy metal is a subgenre of metal. just like doom metal, death metal or progressive metal.
please lead as an example and use the terms correctly
frank unodostres nah metal and heavy metal have become synonymous, meanings of words change pal
who decides that? it just sounds wrong
Please care less about genres, they are indeed flawed at best. You can't put art into nice boxes.
frank unodostres Yeah, only the genre was originally called "heavy metal" instead of just "metal".
Orphaned land could go to jail for what they say?!
what?!
LOL
You do not know anything about Israel?!
no IOWA?
#1...uhhhhhhh ok
Where's the system has failed by megadeth, and lateralus by tool?
Trane Sonic tool is not emo at all
Trane Sonic lol what
Trane Sonic what do you mean emo, have you even listened to tool at all?
Jason Woods Tool is more than music, it's kinda spiritual tbh
Adrian Kondanari i know, each album is a different experience than the others.
Guess you like Norwegian Metal 😀
By what standard is Porcupine Tree metal? Sure, they added some "heavy" guitars when they got to 'In Absentia,' but that didn't make them any less boring than they were before. They're just boring, louder.
