This was one of my favorite books of the year for so many reasons, it had some issues for sure but just something about Misaki spoke to my soul.

I think the last chapter was to tie it into the series she had written already, but I defiently get that it felt a bit jarring.

I really loved this book, even all the critiques and specific moments you and other reviewers mentioned I remember really liking. Which like reading is subjective like you said, so I don’t think anyone is right or wrong but I think the last chapter worked for me cause it made me laugh a lot which I think was a good cathartic emotional way for me to end it. I also knew from chapter one I would love it but I am weird about world building. I love info dumps and exposition and I also love being thrown in with no knowledge and just have to figure it out. But I think the beginning reminded me of mistborn’s world building style, which was one of my first adult fantasies so I actually felt really at home in the writing and then like you said, act 2 happens and I just really loved the emotional impact it jad

It’s my favorite book I’ve read this year, and I think you nailed this review. You perfectly described the strengths, weaknesses, and uniqueness of the book. You are such a great,

I finished it in November as well and I loved it even the beginning because to me I thought that if the beginning wasn’t written the way it was, it would have left the readers confused on some of the things Mikasa knew in a village where women are suppressed. I do agree that that last chapter didn’t necessarily needed to be added there. But I didn’t mind it all. I loved it and the emotions it makes you feel, I couldn’t pick up another book for a couple weeks. Lol.

I read it last year and it was best of 2019. I loved it with all my heart, it was so emotional, IMO it was better than Poppy War. Highly recommended.

I completely agree about the ending! You were able to put into words a lot of the nebulous thoughts I had about it. Overall I really adored this book, though! It will definitely be in my top 5 of the year, but I do also think that it has some issues.

I loved this book! I don't remember having any issues with the pacing or the ending, to me the ending felt both like a resolution and a beginning for more books if the author intends to build out the world (which I apparently don't mind). IMO the structure (most of the action in the middle), the mother/son main characters and the exploration of slightly more 'domestic' themes, made it quite unique for a fantasy

Heard so many good things about this book! Definitely high on our TBR for 2021! The setting, the themes, descriptions seem right up our alley! Haha at a final fantasy game! Great review!

I really loved the character work, the fight scenes, and the emotional aspects of this book. I had some similar issues to yours, especially with respect to the pacing and the ending. With the pacing, for me it wasn't so much I wanted the action at the end. I just felt like after chapter 8, there was too much variety in the chapter lengths so at different points things seemed almost too short and too long at the same time. I also really loved the final duel scene, but I felt like the book could have ended in the second to last chapter. There was also a small plot line in Misaki's arc that I really did not like (this features in the ending). Overall, I enjoyed my experience reading and would still recommend the book, but like you said, with caveats. I'm looking forward to the live show discussion to get into more detail.

I just bought this a couple weeks ago, been excited to read it for a while. But I was sort've hesitant when I heard there was modern tech and stuff in the book, because for some reason I prefer my fantasy the traditional ancient/medival times way. But I've heard SUCH good things about it I had to buy it. Hoping to start on it soon.

I completely agree with your review, especially the fact that the general structure of the book works fine as it is. The emotional climax worked so well. It's got such glaring flaws, but it manages to overcome them by being one of the most emotionally impactful fantasy books I've read. That duel....

I really enjoyed it and appreciated the realistic take on the effects of war. I agree with your issue about the last chapter, especially because a new character and mystery is introduced which would only make some sense if there was going to be a sequel. My only other issue was that in the last section I didn’t love how suddenly Misaki seemed to be so completely forgiving of Takeru when in reality I think restoration in that relationship would have taken a lot more work and time on both of their parts.
