"The Sword of Kaigen" is one of my favorite books of all times. M. L. Wang is brilliant. I also loved "Blood Over Bright Haven". Seeing the author out of her comfort zone and doing such a great job at Dark Academia was one of my highlights of 2023.

I loved this book, but you're right. It wrecked me! Yet, this book left enough questions unanswered that I hope M.L. Wang changes her mind one day and writes a sequel.

I read this last month! It was so good and so emotional! Just read Blood Over Bright Haven as well - also very very good, but it is a very different book (which is great!).

Loved this book and the twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat. This book reminds me The Queen of Blood by Sarah Beth Durst. That book subverted my expectations all over the place just like Sword of Kaigen.

This book grabbed and held me for 3 days straight until i finished it. I was hooked. It wasn't perfect. But the way it held me from beginning to end was something i havent in a while. Also love how it never really left the village. Need more stories like that

A great book! I loved it as well. So bittersweet. Also agree that the audiobook is well done.

I love what I have read so far. But I don’t know if I want to finish. I am sure you know where I’m at.

I'm also a crier. You do not speak fast; you speak at your normal speed. Awesome description of the book.

    This infuriates me lmao 😭
I swear to god everyone LOVES this book, I see people raving about it constantly and I genuinely find it to be one of the worst books I've ever read. It reads like a 14yo wrote it, it's inconsistent, corny as hell, weeb-y, and just not very engaging. It's giving poorly executed anime fanfiction. I didn't find it emotional at all… Well actually I guess annoyance is an emotion. I love me some catharsis, like A Little Life is one of my fav books. But this just wasn't giving anything
Generally I can understand why other people might like something I don't. Like Robin Hobb for example. I acknowledge she's a great writer, I just hate her storytelling. But 3 super popular things that I hate and can't understand anyone enjoying are Sword of Kaigen, Squid Game and Money Heist. They're so corny that I find them painfully bad and it's so annoying haha. It's not even like it's camp, it's just plain bad.
I guess I'll try the new release to see if it's any better.

Interesting. It's like you've read a different book - but then I love Robin Hobb as well (mainly her Liveship Traders - the Farseer Trilogy not so much).
So which fantasy books do you consider great writing? Genuinely curious! 😜

This book broke me, I loved the setting and the focus on a mother ms son. Sobbed so much in middle that I just had to put the book down.
Loved seeing the aftermath too, so well done, traumatic but also beautiful ❤
Empire of the Vampire has a subplot that you are sure is coming to a certain point, but when it does it’s still heartbreaking.
The Binding was also pretty hard hitting on the emotions.
Hobb is brilliant, though I didn’t like Soldier Son but I loved her books when she wrote as Megan Lindholm.
Anne Bishops Black Jewels trilogy also does a number on carving through emotions

I just finished this book. It made me feel so much. I don't cry often with books but this one did make me cry.
