    I worked for a automotive tuning company in the mid-80s that used Mrs. Orcutt's driveway for testing. We used to obtain a permit from the county to close the road. I did 150mph on it once, but it was in much better shape then. Never had a chance to check out the house so thanks for including that.

    Haven't been there in over a decade. Peterson Publishing used to use that strip to clock 1/4 mile times. Car mfg. R&Ds used to use it when testing prototypes. But please be advised that the strip of road has not been maintained for several years and may be dangerous.

    That's a cool story. I like seeing history like this that still exists. The story would have been just as interesting if she got her own highway exit because then it would be an existing exit for nothing now.

    Hey guys, happy Saturday! This is a bit of Rt 66 lore I wasn't aware of. A great story of "desert rat" who built a compound out in the middle of nowhere and became something of a legend. Now I have have another bit of Mother road history to explore next time I pass by. Wandering around the house, it looks like a prime spot to come across a rattlesnake or two...watch your step! Until next time, happy trails!

    Dolph Briscoe, past Texas Governor, had a ranch outside of Catarina, Texas. I believe it was 18.2 miles of paved road from the highway to the house ( I think that number is correct). He also had a small airfield adjacent to the house to accomodate his planes and others. Some say there was a control tower but, I never saw that part of the property.

    William Warren and Mary Orcutt had a 210 acre vacation home Rancho Sombra del Roble, Spanish for "Ranch of the Shaded Oak" in what is now West Hills,CA in the 1920s that had a long driveway lined with large palm trees that lead to their front gate. I wonder if they are related. They share a last name and long driveway in common. Today it is a public park that is only about 24 acres.

    Hey u guys r in my neighborhood again. It’s amazing about newberry because lots of famous ppl lived out there as a get away and used either their own planes or went thru dagget airport to go back to la if they didn’t drive ya know. But it’s interesting. U also passed by houses that literally got ate up by sand dunes!!! So if u guys come here again it would be cool if u came to Barstow and go on the HISTORIC 1st bridge which is currently being built a new one next to the old one. The old one is one of those special
    Metal ones from the 40s and most ppl do not know that that’s an old highway. I belive highway 91. And it was there to Route 66 which is our Main Street and if u guys go over the 1st bridge u guys have been to Harvey house I think but that road and brodge there on the other side is also houses are up by sand because that’s the Mojave river. It’s dirt 90 percent of the time and mainly underground but it’s important part of the desert. So those houses are the end of “crooks” dt and yes the name is fitting 🤣

    • @perceivedvelocity9914

      The United States is massive. Old buildings that are close to a major city are normally torn down and redeveloped quickly. Buildings that are abandoned in a remote location can sit and decay. There are exceptions to that of course. Detroit for example was once major city. Its economy collapsed after the auto industry left. It has a lot of abandoned buildings. The Detroit city government only has the funds to tear down a handful of their abandoned buildings each year.

    That actually happened in 1984, not 1964. There's a lot of supposition as to how the driveway came into being. The woman that lived there at the end of that road was killed or replaced less than a month after the highway was completed in the area. Orcs in the desert.

    • @randys6698
      @randys6698 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The driveway was finished in 1968. How and why it was built has been well documented. Mrs Orcutt died in 1984. It's so nice to meet a real conspiracy theorist.
