  • How to make your own pocket striking device. A pocket Makiwara! Makiwaras have been used in Japanese martial like Karate for ages. I always wanted a pocket version of this. I searched online, but couldn't find one...so I made my own. Here is how I made mine.

I'm not so technically minded/gifted so I just made sure to collect a fist sized pebble/rock from the beach near my friends house and use trees in the park/woodlands.
Thanks for sharing your creation us 🤗

This is a very practical piece of equipment and keeps your hand tools sharp. Good for holidays and supplementary conditioning and is a great fit for the Fairbairn system or WW2 Combatives

A couple of things. Makiwara is an Okinawan training tool. The mechanics used in actual makiwara training cannot be achieved using your tool. It is a good tool to train your knuckles, but the knuckle conditioning is more an incidental benefit of training makiwara. But be careful training the knuckles you demonstrated here as they are associated with the Heart Meridians in TCM. Makiwara training in Okinawa emphasizes the finger in which the Large Intestine runs along - the Pointer finger, but it is offset on its striking surface. The Middle finger has the Pericardium running along it, on the palm side of the hand. That said, I dig the concept. It could be very useful. I would make two and use them when I am sitting, placing them on each side and pushing myself off a bench with my knuckles. Great wrist training too, as well as a Shrug type exercise. Just my unsolicited and unimportant opinion.

a wonderful video, enjoyed watching you gather up the material and make it. also enjoyed the comments. I have a few small pieces of wood wrapped in cordage as well as various sized "bean bag" type bags with "bb's" in them. some are easy to carry about others are not. I just think this was a wonderful project .

Thanks for the great tip! I've found that hardware stores in HK are more likely to carry metal and wooden components than BB's. Were considering these initially, but I wanted something anyone can go pick up from your local DIY store.

I made one using ball barrings and a ziplock bag wrapped in duct tape. Its a bit heavy to carry but its convenient to train with on the go.

Thank you Caio Costa. Glad you liked the video, hope it inspires you to create your own martial arts tools. Myself being a martial arts enthusiast would love one of these as a gift. Thanks for the comment.

Makiwara isn't a knuckle conditioning tool.
It's a tool for giving the karateka feedback on proper biomechanical alignment and developing power via proper biomechanics.
Makiwara isn't meant for conditioning knuckles.
All Okinawan kara te practitioners know this.
Punching hard surfaces with knuckle joints leads to arthritic joints and bursitis.
This why we cover makiwara with rice straw and rice straw rope.
When I trained American Wing Tsun Kunfa under sifu Keith Fain we struck a sand filled bag with knuckles and we did iron palm training on a padded board using palm, back of hand and edge of palm.
Again, We never punched hard objects with knuckle joints.

I made a great condition ball out of a soccer ball ⚽ cut a small 2 inch cut and filled it with sand...sealed the cut with a small strip of medical tape..it has lasted over 25 YEARS 🙂 Works AWESOME and you can use a pillow case/ laundry bag/ or just about anything to put it in and hang it up..
You can make smaller versions out of any size ball ya find..as long as it is hollow.. the soccer ball is great because the sand is firm but not solid because of the shape..feels very much like a head depending how ya hit it🙂hope that can help

If possible I'd round off the corners. Much easier on the pocket

Hi Microbakery, yes i guess you could round the corners, but i wanted to get the project done in a couple hours so I didn't bother. it's down to you what size you want to make your device, could be bigger or smaller depending on where u carry it, pocket or backpack. I always have my wooden 1 in my back pocket. I'll upgrade to the metal one in a year or so. Thanks for the comment.

Hey Microbakery, thanks for the comment. Yeh if your wood or metal has sharp edges I'd highly recommend that. Luckily my projects seemed to work fine, and the leader provides soft padding and I don't seem to have any problems with it.
