It is unreal. I was up and down as a fan. I loved him in the 1968 Olympics. Sure, he won the Gold Medal. It was how he went about it afterwards that grabbed everyone's attention, prancing around the ring with the American flag, bowing to all 4 sides of the ring. John Carlos and Tommy Smith had extended their black glove covered hands in a "black power" stand when they won. Nobody knew what George would do if he won, then he did his patriotic bows. I loved that version of George. Then, with his total destruction of Frazier, after the first knockdown, he spread his arms, and looked like he snarled at Joe while Joe was on the canvas. That's when I started seeing who he had been in the streets, a "violent, uncooperative human being", to paraphrase Larry Merchant. Years later, when in his last fight in his first go-round, he threw a punch at Jimmy Young, and as he was bringing that fist back, he tried to backhand Young. If you've never seen that, go back and watch the Young fight again. He did it at least once. At that point, I was glad George lost that fight. Many years later, when he fought Mike Jameson, he threw an uppercut, a trademark punch of George Foreman. This time, though, as he brought that fist down from the uppercut, he tried to use his elbow as a downward hammer on Jamesons nose!! Thankfully, he missed! I had been a huge fan again, and when I saw that, I thought oh no, here we go. But I never saw George do anything nasty again after that. I almost cried when he KOd Moorer. I had some friends over watching the fight, and after the 7th and 8th rounds, we kinda lost interest in the fight, as Moorer was clearly winning, and the beer and BS started flowing faster. All of a sudden the announcers got really loud, and everybody in the room stood up just as Moorer's feet flew up higher than the rest of his body, and his head bounced off the canvaa!! Everyone in the room was just blown away, as Jim Lampley said "the 68th man in 26 years to have fallen before the professional fury of George Foreman"!! At my house, the beers started flowing pretty fast after that!!! That was a great night in sports history, for sure. Can't believe it was 26 years ago.......
This is interesting. I've always wondered about this fight. Before I even heard this, I was wondering whether he was drugged, because he looked so sluggish in the later rounds. To me, it did look like a fast count. I need to look at it more closely, but I thought he was up at the count of ten. If so, the round was over, and the ref could have waited at least until the next round before the fight was stopped. There was also a suspicious comment by Herbert Muhammad about giving the ref money to stop the fight if Ali was in trouble. (see Thomas Hauser's book.) Even with all of this - I think Ali would have won anyway. His style was too much for George, and George was used to fights being over before the third round. I was in sixth grade when this fight occurred, and I think I was the only one in my class who picked Ali, and I won 50 cents in a bet. George has a great way of looking at this. By losing the fight, he found himself. He is a great man. Let me know if any of my thoughts make sense. Polite rebuttals are welcome. Please refrain from personal attacks.
I just looked at the knockdown and count - it was awfully close. George went down with somewhere between eleven and ten seconds left in the round. It depends where you actually consider him down, as to where the count should begin. The referee started the count with between nine and eight seconds left. The announcer stated that the the referee was at count three with six seconds left in the round - which would imply that George had one extra second after the round ended to get up. (I assume there was no saving by the bell in this fight.) George was up on one knee with two seconds, but was not completely up by the time the round ended. The referee waved to end the fight just as the round ended, but appeared to be at a count of eight or nine. Anyway - awfully close. I can see an argument either way about whether it was a legitimate knockout.

I don’t however remember any fight where any boxer who was sluggish to his feet was allowed to continue the fight even if he just beat the count. Glad George saw the defeat for what it was and he found his true self and strength. For it is in defeat that we truly know what stuff we’re made of.
Only in the last few years have I seen many of Foremans fights from the late 80s to mid 90s, an incredible journey to become World Champion. Boxing and defeating hard and gritty maulers in slug fests, to outwitting slick young lightning bolt world champ prospects with the world at their feet. What an ageing Big George did in the mid-90s deserves enormous praise, a true legend in our lifetime.

It’s was definitely fixed Big George Foreman has thrown plenty of big punches and never got tired before plus those loose ropes which allowed Ali to lay back on them and allowed Big George contaminated water to work. He's a very interesting guy. I remember watching him as a kid and he was muscular, mean and quiet. He disappeared for over 10 years and came back, out of shape, happy and very talkative. I think he would be a remarkable speaker. Hopefully there is a 30 for 30 story on him.
I'm not saying he's right or wrong but I have always had the impression that Foreman was already wabbling at the start of the fight long before Ali started hitting him . Actually even Ali looked quite surprised when George went down, like he was wondering "this easy really?"
Fighters are notorious for making all kinds of excuses for their loses, and like George said, they don't seem to complain when they win. Nothing is ever perfect in combat sports. Accept your legitimate losses like you do your wins.

If you've never seen that, go back and watch the Young fight again. He did it at least once. At that point, I was glad George lost that fight. Many years later, when he fought Mike Jameson, he threw an uppercut, a trademark punch of George Foreman. This time, though, as he brought that fist down from the uppercut, he tried to use his elbow as a downward hammer on Jamesons nose!! Thankfully, he missed! I had been a huge fan again, and when I saw that, I thought oh no, here we go. But I never saw George do anything nasty again after that. I almost cried when he KOd Moorer. I had some friends over watching the fight, and after the 7th and 8th rounds, we kinda lost interest in the fight, as Moorer was clearly winning, and the beer and BS started flowing faster. All of a sudden the announcers got really loud, and everybody in the room stood up just as Moorer's feet flew up higher than the rest of his body, and his head bounced off the canvaa!! Everyone in the room was just blown away, as Jim Lampley said "the 68th man in 26 years to have fallen before the professional fury of George Foreman"!! At my house, the beers started flowing pretty fast after that!!! That was a great night in sports history, for sure. Can't believe it was 26 years ago.......

This is interesting. I've always wondered about this fight. Before I even heard this, I was wondering whether he was drugged, because he looked so sluggish in the later rounds. To me, it did look like a fast count. I need to look at it more closely, but I thought he was up at the count of ten. If so, the round was over, and the ref could have waited at least until the next round before the fight was stopped. There was also a suspicious comment by Herbert Muhammad about giving the ref money to stop the fight if Ali was in trouble. (see Thomas Hauser's book.)
Even with all of this - I think Ali would have won anyway. His style was too much for George, and George was used to fights being over before the third round. I was in sixth grade when this fight occurred, and I think I was the only one in my class who picked Ali, and I won 50 cents in a bet.
George has a great way of looking at this. By losing the fight, he found himself. He is a great man.

I just looked at the knockdown and count - it was awfully close. George went down with somewhere between eleven and ten seconds left in the round. It depends where you actually consider him down, as to where the count should begin. The referee started the count with between nine and eight seconds left. The announcer stated that the the referee was at count three with six seconds left in the round - which would imply that George had one extra second after the round ended to get up. (I assume there was no saving by the bell in this fight.) George was up on one knee with two seconds, but was not completely up by the time the round ended. The referee waved to end the fight just as the round ended, but appeared to be at a count of eight or nine. Anyway - awfully close. I can see an argument either way about whether it was a legitimate knockout.
@@josephschaeffer3403 yeah, all that could be true, however the referee usually determines if the boxer is still in the physical state to resume the fight even if he beats the count. I don’t however remember any fight where any boxer who was sluggish to his feet was allowed to continue the fight even if he just beat the count.
Glad George saw the defeat for what it was and he found his true self and strength. For it is in defeat that we truly know what stuff we’re made of.

Only in the last few years have I seen many of Foremans fights from the late 80s to mid 90s, an incredible journey to become World Champion. Boxing and defeating hard and gritty maulers in slug fests, to outwitting slick young lightning bolt world champ prospects with the world at their feet. What an ageing Big George did in the mid-90s deserves enormous praise, a true legend in our lifetime.
I can never get of listening to George. Always an inspiration.

It’s was definitely fixed Big George Foreman has thrown plenty of big punches and never got tired before plus those loose ropes which allowed Ali to lay back on them and allowed Big George contaminated water to work. That’s why Ali didn’t throw a punch for all of those rounds he knew that medication need time to work in Big George’s body.

He's a very interesting guy. I remember watching him as a kid and he was muscular, mean and quiet. He disappeared for over 10 years and came back, out of shape, happy and very talkative. I think he would be a remarkable speaker. Hopefully there is a 30 for 30 story on him.

I'm not saying he's right or wrong but I have always had the impression that Foreman was already wabbling at the start of the fight long before Ali started hitting him . Actually even Ali looked quite surprised when George went down, like he was wondering "this easy really?"

They were Ali was almost horizontal evading those shots. A tighter rope would've got Ali back in range.
