  • Introducing a new series called “Digging Into Weedon,” by Joan Landis with Pinellas County UF/IFAS Extension Services.
    This first episode tells the story of the Weedon Island canoe on display at the Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center. The Weedon Island canoe, radiocarbon dated to be over 1,100 years old, is an ancient saltwater canoe which was found on the shores of Weedon Island Preserve. This segment celebrates the 5-year anniversary of when the Weedon Island canoe went on display to the public on October 17, 2015.
    Phyllis Kolianos, who was involved in every stage of the process, takes us back to when the canoe was first discovered on Preserve property and shares the amazements and the disappointments of bringing the historic canoe to the public. Phyllis Kolianos is a founder, expert and current board member with the Alliance for Weedon Island Archaeological Research and Education, Inc (AWIARE).
