Though published together years later as Op. 49 in 1805, the two sonatas Nos. 19 and 20 ware likely written in 1796-97. The two form companions of a sort, with one in 13 major and the other in 13 minor. Comparatively easy to play, they may have been originally intended for the composer's students.
The Grammy award-winning pianist Daniel Barenboim has been active on the concert stage since the age of seven when he made his stage debut in his hometown of Buenos Aires. Well known for his work with the East-Western Divan Orchestra, a group of young Arab and Israeli musicians, he is currently the director of the Berlin State Opera, La Scala (Milan) and the Staatskapelle Berlin. Barenboim is described as "one of the few musicians in the world today who could accurately be describe as legendary".

Beautifully played. This is not one of the most challenging sonatas by Beethoven, but it is extremely difficult to play it so nicely.

I think that's a very good point. It's one thing to be able to physically play a piece like this. It's something quite different to be able to play it *properly*. Balance, expression, tempo, phrasing, lightness of touch. That's why Daniel Barenboim was and still is a Maestro.

This is a mostly* calm work but I love the way Daniel Barenboim plays. Thank you Daniel Barenboim.❤
*when I say mostly I don’t mean this is all about calmness but slow and sad at the FIRST movement.

kim sahl ...but not a great sonata.
It is very difficult to justify this work’s place (and that of Opus 49 No 2) in the canon of Beethoven’s sonatas as the pair of them are so far short of the other thirty.
That said, No 1 is far better than No 2.

@@elaineblackhurst1509 I find it difficult to understand the use of the word "better" when one compares such works. How do you mean? You mean 19 is more vivid, more joyful, more lyric than 20? You mean you find more meaning in passages of 19? You ought to refrain using words like "better" if you want other musicians to consider seriously what you want to communicate.

@@elaineblackhurst1509 this particular work was composed in 1796 which kind of means it belongs to the classical era. But that doesn't explain the lack of emotion of course. Barenboim chose a more strict approach if I had to take a guess.

@@Thiago-px9ev Even though I too, don't enjoy how Lang Lang behaves while performing the piano - and I think it overshadows the music he is playing- I can't say he is not a real pianist, I can say he is one that should not be taken seriously. Furthermore I think that with his attitude he makes classical music appealing for the mass audience. But as soon as one finds the piano elite(Barenboim, Arrau, Gould etc), then yes I agree, I believe there's no point in returning in Lang Lang. Long story short Lang Lang is good for introducing one to classical music.
