Definitely rewatch the original video: • Metallica & San Franci...
Unpopular opnion: I think he sounds the best he ever has. Old age has given a nice crisp to his voice that really suits that type of music.
totally agree. he’s always sounded like a 45 year old man even from Kill Em All so this is perfect
The late 90s and early 00's were not good for his voice in live shows. Starting on the magnetic tour, he sounded WAY better, and to this day, it's the best he's ever been.
It's not unpopular, actually I think most of us agrees with that
Absolutely. He's been superb since 09, very clear that he's taken lessons on "singing rough"
I agree he sounds great and I just saw the 2 night 72 seasons show... But nothing compares to hetfield 98 to 2002
He HAS bettered with age because he has embraced what he can and can’t do. I saw them in August and his voice has a velvety punch to it. So good.
Ohhh... I like that..."velvety punch." Perfect. 👊🤘
James has gotten so much better with age!! He continues to work on his craft and it’s crazy!!
Chris you should really check out some of their official videos from their M72 Current tour, their new songs, YOU WILL BE BLOWN AWAY by how good they sound as a whole and also James too
This song was the absolute higlight from S&M 1 and it is amazing in S&M 2. Fantastic colaboration piece from both the metal band and the classic orchestra
Im not sure if you've done a video on this but load/reload era from James is possible the best his voice has ever sounded.
James not only have amazing and unique song but he also plays guitar while doing it without any mistakes which is more incredible.
The big key to James' vocal evolution is that, from a certain point in the mid 2000s he stopped being afraid of hurting his voice due to using his grit/compression anymore, cause he just uses it when its 100% viable, safe and effective. He went through a period in the 90s were he would sing everything as clean as he could live, save a few oohs and yeahs. Now he still pulls off +1:30 hour shows at 60. Other vocalists would be fried at that age (or even before).
I was the old metal head who was against James Hatfield changing his voice until I noticed my voice changing as well as I got older. He is such a talent! ❤
Kirk doesn’t get the credit he deserves. The way he uses the wah pedal adds tons of expression; I love using the wah to feel even more the music I play at the right moments. Bleeding Me is a great example.
The solo here is so good because it sounds like a train coming at you.
Edit: I take that back. Its not as good as the original.
Yes, that, and The Outlaw Torn are great examples of Kirk using his wah to tell a story within the story. 😊
Awesome analysis! Thank you Chris for how you have discovered how to demonstrate dynamic resonance , in a way I have not known any other to explain it the way you do. Forever grateful.
I just love this man, truly. I love you James.
amazing
This has made me love Papa Het’s singing even more. Your enthusiasms is 🔥
Your content is pure gold.
Thanks, Chris, for another master class🤘🏼
Thank you Chris for sharing your knowledge. I like what you say about James' voice and method. I also like that you say what you feel on Kirk's playing with the wha and his beloved Greeny. He is often ridiculed by others for this. I hope you will be able to see them on their M72 tour. I was able to see them in Montreal on 08-11. Was a blast. Keep up the great work and have fun!
Like a fine wine, Het just gets better with age! :D
Chris has that Golden Retriever Aura
the horseshoe moustache is perfect too 🫡
this video needs more views!
Agreed!
I've been to Metallica this weekend for the first time. They sound amazing. You can clearly hear and see they are oldschool rock band, they don't need much "polishing" their music. They just do it naturally. Amazing experience.
I'd love to hear your take on Gord Downie of The Tragically Hip
Yeah
💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 amazing
James is untouchable...react to Master of Pupets at Seatlle 89...fckng amazing live.
Chris, how about Jay Buchanan of Rival Sons? Scream in "secret", incredible belts in sweet life and do your worst. Lines at live called "acoustic six song set" in song called shooting stars. Pleaseee I crave for it 🙏 🙏 🙏
"He led with his head" You didn't know James was part lion? The man has to get his roar on from time-to-time. Lol 😊
I really like your breakdown with James. You're right-- James has very recognizable vocals. And how he's changed them up through the years, while maintaining the unmistakable Hetfield, is fascinating to me.
This current tour has James sounding better than he has in sometime.
Curious, as to what you would think about checking out James singing the Unforgiven 3 at this same concert. He's alone and no guitar.
Watching his vulnerability with the awkwardness of not having his security blanket, so to speak... would be interested to hear a vocal coaches critique.
Thank you!
That S&M DVD defined a year of my life. I expected NEM to be the hit. Nope. ‘No Leaf Clover’ stole the show.
Biggest surprise was ‘Master of Puppets’. It was pure 🔥with…strings.
Second question - do you have a video on how to memorize song lyrics? That's something I often struggle with
that's a great idea for a video!
Teleprompters! Lots of people use them. Man, sometimes on songs I sang a hundred times I'll blank. Same thing with guitar. For me, memorising is one thing and staying in the moment is another. Two valuable subjects!
Analysis vocal Brian Johnson AC/DC please
''it's awfully hard to find a bad live vocal performance from james hetfield'' i agree with you but man please watch some of the shows from 1993 because my god did James struggle during does shows lol

@Chris Liepe Architects do good too with Orchestra :)
They sure do! I've done a video on it!! :)
I like him best when he's not autotuned
very few bands have the funds for a orgastra ,only the mighty metallica
Is that a custom guitar? I don’t recognize the headstock.
@tijmen-vm9lq thank you. That’s a very nice looking guitar.
More Metallica. Yeah-eah
Can you share your first Metallica live show experience?
