Amen. Great observation. Joshua is born on 17th of May, which is a special holiday in Norway. I’ve heard it described as “The Day of freeing all children.” ❤️🌟
This is the quintessential QOTSA song IMO. Their entire career is encapsulated in it - I hear echoes of Rated R, Lullabies, and Era Vulgaris in the melody, while Clockwork is evoked in the general sound of this song. Still it sounds fresh and honest - as candid as Homme can be. Such moving lyrics. Fucking masterpiece, if you ask me.
Same. I'm glad a rock band like QOTSA was played on the show. Great band and great song. I needed a break from the hip hop on Bel Air, which is a good series too but I needed some rock in a show.
I have been a hip-hop kid from New York for most of my life. Then one day I bought the game Rock Band and heard Go With the Flow. I felt like my life was changed. I came across this song while watching the show Wolf Like Me and it just reminds me, why I fell in love with QOTSA in the first place. Wishing Josh continued health.
Music can heal? YES, and here's a perfect example. Spanish is my main language and when I first heard this song I could not understand the words but the melody vibrated in synchrony with my soul and gave me some big goosebumps...big thanks Josh and family
My father recently passed away from a terrible disease, in only a matter of months, now I've only got my mom, no siblings. This song encompasses how I am my mom's fortress and she is mine. This band is so special to me, and their music seems to keep being a companion to my life. Thanks Josh and co.
Onward, my friend. Keep being there for your mom. I was raised by a single mother, and feel the same as you. Now I have a daughter and need to be her fortress. An honor indeed.
I lost my father (27) years ago Only sibling /Sister (5) years ago My mother, I lost her last year who was my only fortress. It may take a while, but you can find all that's needed to thrive in the Hart's /fortresses of friends and total strangers . Never give up Never surrender!
Both my brother and I were heroin addicts (among a plethora of other substances) for 15 years. I've been clean for 3 and 1/2 years; he, about 9 months. Luckily somebody turned me onto QOTSA just over 3 years ago. What I'm getting at is that this song means to me that if you are offered or recognize the opportunity for a second chance at life, grab that shit because that moment is typically when humans realize why they feel so hopeless and need it most.
I know that josh wrote this about his kid(s), and knowing that I listened to this and thought about how I had all but destroyed the relationship with my dad. I balled like a little girl. I’m happy to say We’ve repaired the rift between us. I just couldn’t bear the thought of him dying with me being estranged from him. It took me hearing josh express how much he cares about his kid in this song to understand how much my dad loves me, despite our problems. Thank you josh
The beginning of Fortress, the way the intro slowly moves in, is beautiful and haunting. I feel scared, alone, my heart burns, and I want to run. I found out devastating news, before listening to the song, for the first time. It still gets me every once in a while…but such a comforting feeling, when you know, you’re safe and not alone. Love you CW
I feel like I've grown up with Queens of the Stone age. Where their earlier albums were Testosterone filled, bad ass odes to going balls out, every subsequent album got more introspective and imo more beautiful. It's mirrored my own personal growth. These guys will always be my favorite band. Queens of the Stone Age>Everybody Else.
Favorite band in nowadays musical desert, that's for sure. Might be the only decent band out there making them big bucks nowadays. Music sucks now. But best band ever is a huge stretch and a half, they would say so themselves. There's no beating Zeppelin, floyd, rush etc. The golden heroes of the golden age. Still, qotsa is as good as it gets nowadays, and tho the bar is addmitedly low, they are insane good. I would put them in S tier (the golden age heroes being an special SS)
I know JH has had some tough personal struggles in recent times. He is passing through some darkness. If he truly wrote this song then he is a man of internal resources. Whatever has gone down..‘it’s how you rise that says who you really are ‘…..we, your fans are here waiting for you.

This has become one of my most listened to songs over the past few months. I deal with depression, but I'm the type of person that tries to help everyone else and don't really care about myself to often. I feel like I'm the fortress for so many to come back to. It just speaks to me and the type of person I am to others. Thank you QOTSA for all of your music over the years.
Honestly. When I first popped the CD in my car and heard this song - about halfway through I was almost in tears. Just such good song writing, I can already tell this album is going to be a grower - but this song? Immediately beautiful.
This song is everything to me right now. My husband and I have been through a lot in the past year, and we have both been each other's fortress. This song is amazing. And, I want to add that Michael Shuman's bass playing is sublime. He is playing a gorgeous melodic bass line in the midst of a busy arrangement, and it still stands out. Brilliant!
I, just, heard this song and it touched me to the core. The anniversaries of the tragic death of my loved ones are always a challenge to deal with, because one of them was a week before my birthday and two of them were on Christmas Eve (my favourite holiday). But, this song keeps me strong and gives me hope that my heart will heal and feel less broken one day...
still here 1/2022...just watched the first season of Wolf Like Me/episode 1 and it was a perfect closing song and I had to have it, thanx for sucha great song wowww
I think this is one of the most beautiful songs josh ever wrote. I get emotional and get the chills every time i hear it cause the lyrics and melody is gorgeous. Such geniuses these guys.😭
"I have little people that live in my house and someday I will be gone but the music that I’ve made I believe will live on and they will have that. And it may not will live on for you but I don’t really care about that, it will live on for them and so when I’m not here anymore they will have that. And that’s in a way that fortress will be gone but there will be another way to try to feel safe.“ - Josh Homme about Fortress
I'm basically on the first run through this album. As a layman (non musician), I think "Fortress" is brilliant. Brilliant. Another song I'm diggin' is "Un-Reborn Again". Queens of Stone Age-- killin' it! 👍🏿
Been listening to this band since 15 years, but this morning I was feeding my 1 month boy, singing to this song. Took us 2 years and a lot of pain to get this baby. I suddenly realized the meaning of this song and almost burst into tears. Real artists don't have billion views. They hit you where it needs to be hit, and leave something to be shared.
I lost my husband a few months ago. The pain has been unbearable but I heard this song and every time I listen to it, it helps me cope with my grief. I've always loved music but since his passing seems like music is so much more meaningful to me.
Going through what feels like the darkest period of my life right now... something about this song just comforts and really speaks to me. Queens will forever be a huge influence and rock in my life.
Wow this song really hits close to home for me. I have a teenage daughter who is struggling, as I do, with depression. Thanks for the song guys. Thanks for taking off the mask on this one.
You two should go travelling together, visit some really beautiful places so you can get away from all the stress and nuances of a working life and find yourselves
one of the only band that lets you listen on youtube to the entire album and keeps pumping out epic jams! love you queens forever and always. this song is so fucking good i cant even.
Josh knows perfectly how to make a good melodic song. I wish there was more of this in the last 2 discs. It reminded me of Lullabies to Paralyze, my favorite disc.
This song is proof people care about you even if you can't see it. It sounds like qotsa is speaking directly to the listener. Feels pretty good to be in the thoughts of your favourite band right?
This Song is The Gate Between This World and The Void Lost in Time... Thanks for freeing me from my memories... I'll never look back... I'll never go back.
"I believe I know you; Yet, I don't truly know myself; I pray you won't feel as alone as I have felt" - I'm not a father (yet), but it must mean so much to a QoTSA fan that is already a father or mother to listen to this song, specially now that we know Josh wrote this one with his daughter in mind. Absolutely chilling!
Bruno Amaral what a very insightful comment. I have a daughter the same age as Josh's and feel this song accurately represents what a father feels while watching their little girl turn into young woman. You hope they won't experience your life's demons and uncertainty but know it is inevitable.
I do not know of any better band during these 2000s-2010s and beyond. Truly are listening to the GOATS of my generation. QOTSA is up there with 3-4 other bands for me during that time. What say you internet?
I absolutely love how the album (to me) often is reminiscent of Like Clockwork and Era Valguris experimental and more blusey sound from the two albums. Not to mention, Mark Ronson has done a really exceptionally well job on this album.
From Badasses in the Desert to the speakers for the dead to the devil himself. QOTSA never fails to cut through the modern noise and tap into those crooked parts of the soul. to me, this is a song about the strength of vulnerability and mutual support. the feeling of having gone through difficulties preparing you to help others through their own struggles.
I'm back to comment on this as I face my addiction and attempt to catch and hold onto sobriety. I'm back to face this darkness on my own, Josh. Thanks for the heads-up.
I remember when I first heard the chorus. The melody was so unpredictable and refreshing. The way he goes up and down in pitch is really cool. Josh has come a very long way as a singer since he started.
no, i think he meant his music is thing left for them after he's gone. i saw the interview. he didn't say, "i wrote fortress for my kids" it's a kind thought but put things out there that you assumed.
( ‾ʖ̫‾) Not sure who it was written for or about but in my personal opinion it somehow seems to be for his best buddy from Eagles of Death Metal and his experience during the Paris massacre at that show. But that's just me.
I guess we'll never know for sure, but that's a very touching interpretation. Regardless of who it's for, it's a beautiful song and I guess we all have something different to take from it :)
I copy-paste the phrase said by Josh about Fortress: "I have little people that live in my house and someday I will be gone but the music that I’ve made I believe will live on and they will have that. And it may not will live on for you but I don’t really care about that, it will live on for them and so when I’m not here anymore they will have that. And that’s in a way that fortress will be gone but there will be another way to try to feel safe.“ To me its for his children.
Eduardo Porcayo No way, ...Like Clockwork still has that obscure, kind of metal, sound in songs like My God is the Sun or Keep Your Eyes Peeled. This album is more like Them Crooked Vultures but cleaner and softer
i feel like josh put everything from his soul and heart to this album. no wonder the next album takes so long to make. you cannot simply make a better album then this. every note and lyric in this album is brilliant from start to end
Nah villains of circumstance is baaad, it's like josh is just miserable failing to sound like josh it's incredibly boring. The faster part of the song is great tho, but that's only like a 7th of the song
This feels like the kind of song you have to share with your loved ones. I just started learning the guitar, I hope to be good enough to play this masterpiece to my child one day.
So far my favorite from the record. Fell in love on the first listen. It's like the first qotsa song that is simply uplifting without a Wink or sarcasm ... Just beautiful!
I now call this the QOTSA 'starter'....I first heard the faint strains of the song in the 1st episode of Wolf Like Me....sent me rushing to Tunefind....and that was beginning of a gorgeous 2 month period of learning all the songs.. the changes of personnel, the whole load...I took a deep dive. I'm 66...a 70's woman....never had heard of them. I just don't get how I missed such great music but I'm in the swim now...and love all the albums ....It's amazing to see how the music and lyrics change as they reflect the life of JH..who is a grown man and who has ALWAYS written what he knows.....
The first time I heard this song, an acoustic version here on TH-cam, it literally brought me to tears. Can't wait to hear the rest of the album. They were kind enough to release it on my birthday. Thanks guys! QOTSA are the best...
Great Track, even better lyrics. What I noticed tho, is that Joshua uses the same patterns to write almost every "deep songs" of any QOTSA record, like the most personal, reflective ones always sound a little similar: In the fade, Fortress, Into the Hollow, The Vampyre, I Never Came, etc.
Best song every written. This song means more to me than any song because when I feel like I just want to end it I know I must fight to live and hopefully somehow be loved one day ❤💯❤
2024 and this song still hits hard - If ever your fortress caves, you're always safe in mine .... Lyrics are so beyond amazing 💌
Same dude
This song helped me through the loss of my wife, she passed away in 2017, and even now this song gives me strength.
May she rest in peace, man. And may you have more strength in your years to come.
I’m sorry for your loss
Me too-my husband and other things☀️✌🏼🌹
maria lord ❤️
It's helped me too.
I'm sorry for you're loss .
Believe me ,I know what its like "always remember you're never alone "
It's important.
Cheers❤️
Josh isn't just singing to his own kids... he's singing to all kids. Good music is a fortress: there's safety and comfort in it.
Thank god he won the case against Brody Dalle. Just by listening to this song you can tell he is a great father. I knew she was full of shit right from the start
I play it for my 18 year old son all the time!!!
It's mine and my daughter's song and it was before I found out about it being him writing it for his kids a few years ago.
It's a music that truly show how genius Josh is, he made a song for his kid, and for everyone else.
Amen. Great observation.
Joshua is born on 17th of May, which is a special holiday in Norway.

[Verse 1]
Your heart is like a fortress
Keep your feelings locked away
Is it easier?
Does it make you feel safe?
You wander through the darkness
Of wilderness behind your eyes
I know you’re afraid
But you gotta move on
[Chorus 1]
Every fortress falls
It is not the end
It ain't if you fall
But how you rise that says who you really are
So get up and come through
If ever your fortress caves
You're always safe
[Verse 2]
I believe I know you
Yet, I don't truly know myself
I pray you won't feel as alone as I have felt
I don't want to fail you so
I tell you the awful truth
Everyone faces darkness on their own
As I have done, so will you
[Chorus 2]
Every fortress falls
It is not the end
It ain't if you fall
But how you rise that says
Who you really are
So get up and go through
If ever your fortress caves
You're always safe in mine
[Verse 3]
The Earth spins round the sun
And behold
Everything happens
Every night that falls prey to sunrise
If your fortress is under siege
You can always run for me
If your fortress is under siege
You can always run
[Chorus 3]
Every fortress falls
It is not the end
It ain't if you fall
But how you rise that says
Who you really are
So get up and go through
If ever your fortress caves
You're always safe in mine
If ever your fortress caves
You're always safe in mine
If ever your fortress caves
You're always safe in mine

The Great Sloth Lord that's true actually...
i love their music, and their distortion+fuzz effects. Long love QOTSA
Favourite track from the album absolutely love this song
Stunning.
I think this is the song of the album, great vibe.
Thank you
Qotsa if your reading this thank you sincerely. Respects from southeast ghetto Los Angeles
Thanks for the heads-up.
amazing song!
great album but Fortress, there's always at least one genius track in there from you guys and this is it for me
Erin At Eleven Me too. Favourite track on the album. I love that it’s about being a safe haven for his kids.
A very strong track. Album was great but this is a seller!
It's finally growing on me. Having songs from Villains randomly played among other QotSA stuff has saved me!
Thanks Josh, for writing this song, yes all hearts get broken. ..Great before-bed song
He might have written this song for his daughter (or kids) but damn, it speaks to me. Puts me at ease. Love It!
The best song from villans, it's so pretty and special...
This is probably my favorite songs so far on this album. Just all around a great song.
This is such a beautiful song!
The way this song slowly pulls together is some soul healing shit.
“Wolf Like Me” brought me here. Helped me to understand myself
I love this song, is one of my favorites of QOTSA so far
Damn I love this song, one of the best tunes on the album. Takes me away every time...
This is probably my personal favorite from this new record. Josh just keeps changing his sound every album and I love it.
Great song!
Queens of The Stone age.
Always will be the best.
Absolutely beautiful.
I remember when I first heard the chorus. The melody was so unpredictable and refreshing. The way he goes up and down in pitch is really cool. Josh has come a very long way as a singer since he started.
Best song on the album by a distance and proof that a QOTSA ballad can kick ass
just beautiful..everyone face darkness on their own. of their own....
"If ever your fortress caves
, You're always safe in mine" Someone that dedicate this song..strong letter
I love the chords progression and this synth is pretty awesome. And the sound of the guitar is really convincing.
In my opinion, I feel this was written for Josh's children, everything about it just exudes his love for them! So beautiful!
no, i think he meant his music is thing left for them after he's gone. i saw the interview. he didn't say, "i wrote fortress for my kids" it's a kind thought but put things out there that you assumed.
( ‾ʖ̫‾) YES he talked about it in an interview with Zane Lowe
I copy-paste the phrase said by Josh about Fortress:
"I have little people that live in my house and someday I will be gone but the music that I’ve made I believe will live on and they will have that. And it may not will live on for you but I don’t really care about that, it will live on for them and so when I’m not here anymore they will have that. And that’s in a way that fortress will be gone but there will be another way to try to feel safe.“
To me its for his children.
The chillest album of qotsa
Francisco Rodriguez Riera I'd say. Still love it though
Eduardo Porcayo No way, ...Like Clockwork still has that obscure, kind of metal, sound in songs like My God is the Sun or Keep Your Eyes Peeled. This album is more like Them Crooked Vultures but cleaner and softer
like clockwork is rather mellow but intense at the same time tho
Yeah that's probably the best way to describe it
Like Clockwork. Cracking album and a massive change of pace. Loved it, progression!
This is a song for his daughter. Pure, so beautiful love... natural acceptance of her freedom.
i feel like josh put everything from his soul and heart to this album. no wonder the next album takes so long to make. you cannot simply make a better album then this. every note and lyric in this album is brilliant from start to end
Nah villains of circumstance is baaad, it's like josh is just miserable failing to sound like josh it's incredibly boring. The faster part of the song is great tho, but that's only like a 7th of the song
I love this song.
This feels like the kind of song you have to share with your loved ones. I just started learning the guitar, I hope to be good enough to play this masterpiece to my child one day.
Song got me through Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Came at the perfect time. I love Josh!❤
So far my favorite from the record. Fell in love on the first listen. It's like the first qotsa song that is simply uplifting without a Wink or sarcasm ... Just beautiful!
Top
Wolf Like Me played this - couldn't get this song out of my head. Great show - great tune.
My Favourite! Reminds me a lot of Into The Hollow!
Mariano Mattos exactly what I thought
One of my favorite tracks on this record. So beautiful!
they weren't kidding when they said that this is the best album ever
Who said that Jawl Dawg?
I think i prefer like clockwork
Clockwork was awesome. This is a better album, but I still prefer Clockwork
ThiefOfNavarre That doesn't make any sense though.
More viable monetarilty I suppose. Songs for the Deaf is probably their highest grossing.
Great Track, even better lyrics.
What I noticed tho, is that Joshua uses the same patterns to write almost every "deep songs" of any QOTSA record, like the most personal, reflective ones always sound a little similar:
In the fade, Fortress, Into the Hollow, The Vampyre, I Never Came, etc.
Best song every written. This song means more to me than any song because when I feel like I just want to end it I know I must fight to live and hopefully somehow be loved one day ❤💯❤
its like see your life and your best moments in front of you... so magic!
Best song of the album!
So beautiful...
