    Perfect album cover. It conveys both massive scale and near complete emptiness.
    Whenever I look at it while listening to the album, I imagine that the camera is gradually zooming out to eventually reveal something incomprehensible and terrifying.

    about the "special low frequency version" part of the title, its an homage to the half speed cd reissue of the Syntonic Research album "Environments 2: Tintinnabulation (special low frequency version)" and Earth even used the same font for the cover as that on the Environments 2 cover

And then there was a surprise announcement that the band were going to do a Q&A right after (they're from my town, something I also didn't know). I never comment, but... Holy fucking shit. I never thought I'd see a classic review of this album. I know you've gone on record saying you love it, but I just never thought it'd get that level of up-front appreciation. I remember finding this album on my first visit to [message board redacted] in 2011 and losing my mind. Obviously back then it was played/posted for laughs, but it legitimately left an impact on me. As someone with raging synesthesia, it made me realize you could find "music" (only in quotes to denote the massively multiplicative nature of such a term) comprised of literally anything: any color, any texture, any sound in the world. From there, I found Sunn O))), then harsh noise wall, and the rest has been an incredibly corrugated history. Seeing this album get a classic review is externalizing to no end -- as it not only cements this album as more than just the joke that people On Da Internet made it out to be (regardless of those who, like yourself and myself, seriously enjoyed it), but it adds this album, deservedly, to the canon of true game-changers. The fact that this review aired days after fucking Abbey Road? Tears in my eyes. So, so happy about this. Thanks, Fantano. This made my day.

    • @outsetalec
      @outsetalec 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@p0werfu11Not to the extent that it could have been, but like a lot of easily misunderstood works of art, it was very much thrown around as a tongue-in-cheek "2deep4u" album. That's not to say Earth 2 was *disrespected,* but people were certainly wink-wink-nudge-nudging 90% of the time that they were posting its cover. (If it isn't clear, I'm talking about /mu/ here, which kind of takes the piss out of everything -- but *especially* so in the early 10s.) It's also the case that Sunn O)))'s Black One was far more memed on than even Earth 2 (especially the track "It Took the Night to Believe"), whereas I think Earth 2 got a little more up-front respect. Either way, it was enough of a refrain for me to check out Earth 2 [and Black One following that] and find love in doom drone, so I'll be forever grateful.

      Wow… Disintegration Loops was one of your favorites in high school?? That’s a hard listen, man. More of a conceptual art piece than a piece of music. Earth 2 is about the only album that made me "wake up" dazed. I didn't sleep, but a strong "my brain turned off". and its achieved this multiple times too. Sunn; despite being skilled sound craftsmen, have not been able to achieve the same feeling. Theyve worked wonders in creating other environments and feelings, but hardly the likes of earth 2.
    I knew who sunn was long before earth, too

    Being a Melvins/Nirvana first wave grunge enthusiast, I got both Extra Capsular Extraction and Earth 2 when they originally came out. Earth 2... It's impossible for a metal/sludge listener today to really get the mind blowing *otherness* that came with this record; nothing was really quite like it. Sure, Melvins we're doing some very slow and very, very heavy stuff, but nothing like this. And the engineering was *so* pristine and articulated it was truly like nothing before. Today in a world where drone metal is an entire genre, this simply won't hit the same.
    I've always respected the fact that they never repeated this trick and went on to do other, equally innovative, moves with "Hex" and their more lo-fi garage doom rock material of recent years.

    4:29 I know some record trivia Fantano and Austen dont?! Cool. The cover and title is a reference to the album Tintinambulation 2: Special low frrqurncy version. Yes, it WAS part of a nature series. It's literally the only vinyl I still own🤣 by happenstance.

      Including the back cover weirdness... you spent over 2 minutes mansplaining the whole concept... without being aware of the original classic in the field.I don't blame y'all... It was usually in the Newage section of the record store, filed somewhere between comedy, local, and world.

    Some people find this relaxing but personally I found the album terrifying given the very vague concept of an 'Earth 2' sounding like a bunch of weird distorted noises. The album cover just makes it way more uncomfortable. No idea how they thought of giving drone this theme at the time but it was bloody brilliant

    Fun (or not so much) fact: Dylan Carlson is the person who gave Kurt Cobain the shotgun he shot himself with. Strange that nobody mentioned that since the video released.

    • @borizzle1
      @borizzle1 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      no offense intended but this is hardly obscure trivia at this point

    • @cactaceous
      @cactaceous 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Did he shoot himself with the shotgun though? Did he? Really? Or did someone shoot him up with so much heroin that he overdosed and then they shot him a few hours later, made it look like a suicide to not have an investigation take place? Did Courtney get someone to kill him since she was already fabricating stories in the press because nobody but her said he was suicidal? A lot of questions and all of them point to the fact that what we have been told is not the real story. Dylan Carlson is involved since he was funded by Courtney for years after Kurt’s death. So was Cali Dewitt a junkie nanny ex boyfriend of Courtney’s, his girlfriend Jessica Hopper and Hole guitarist and ex boyfriend of Courtney’s also, Erik Erlandson. All financially benefited for years after.
