I am not a Chanel person. Only one I own is Égoïste, but after sampling Antaeus for the first time since the 90s last week, it IS going to be my next purchase. It’s amazing how anachronistic and good it is from such a mainstream house! Maybe Olivier just keeps it in the range out of respect for his father’s work, but I can’t imagine the marketers being happy about it.
I find the discussion regarding the ‘masculinity’ of frags very interesting. There’s a certain fixation with ‘compliments’ in the community and this is very much in the realm of what you were saying with regards to letting women choose their man’s fragrance. It’s passive to select a fragrance based on its perceived compliment value in the hope that someone will say something nice to you. A woman may not like Antaeus as a self contained sensory experience but if you can pull it off it may just elicit desire in her for something she didn’t realise she wanted.
Antaeus is the gothic dream. My favourite fragrance hands down

Your review of Antaeus by Chanel for Men is spot-on. I got my first bottle of Antaeus back in 1981 for Christmas. I loved it. Back then, the animalic fragrance was even stronger. The fragrance was rich, dark and VERY masculine. Today’s version is lighter, with a citrusy note, which I don’t like as much. Yes, most men probably want to smell like Antaeus, but choose Bleu Chanel to wear instead because their wives or girlfriends want them to. Excellent commentary!

Great content guys. I can't wait for the new podcast. 43 minutes just flew by for me.
With Antaeus some will find it difficult to move beyond that opening (which initially reminded me of the shoe spray they use at bowling alleys). But the dry down is something else. Another reviewer described it well that there are so many different colours but it all blends together seamlessly. It’s clean, creamy and soapy while also being leathery, animalic and dirty at the same time. There are some prominent herbal notes but it never smells green. And the performance is out of this world. A couple of sprays and you will smell it all day.

There are indeed many great l'Artisan parfumeur fragrances for this period of the year : Tea for two, Noir exquis, Dzing, Méchant loup, Fou d'absinthe ...
My favourite vetiver so far is Vetiver Veritas by Heeley. It's really earthy and soily, so maybe not the type of Vetiver you like. It's pretty simple but I really enjoy the quality of it. 😉
Like Daniel I've gotten the pleasure of sampling quite a few Rojas. Amber Oud. Musk Aoud. Aoud. Diagalev. And recently was gifted a bottle of Kingdom of Kuwait Aoud . And cannot wait to wear it when the temperature drops.... It's rich dense complex and kicks down the front door.... Also looking forward to wearing Dior Farenhiet Parfum. A smoother trip down the petrol memory lane lol. Thanks guys ✌️
And I think it's called Kuwait. I don't want anybody to think I'm an idiot lol I just assumed it was apart of that Kingdom line of middle eastern fragrances by Roja. But the only thing in english on the bottle or presentation is Aoud Parfum. So if anyone can educate me on the proper name I'd appreciate it. Thanks ✌️

Antaeus is not something you would wear to a club or an office setting - it's too primal and sophisticated for that. It's a mysterious blend of brains and brawn. It's the type of perfume Ernest Hemming would have worn, or Indiana Jones if he was a real person.
Enjoyed the vid, some great choices. My latest pick ups have been Poivre 23 and Nuit de Feu so looking forward to working those in with my autumn and winter go to’s - Vintage Fahrenheit, By Kilian Amber Oud and Black Phantom, Tom Ford Tuscan Leather and Amber Absolute, want to pick up Chypre Palatin and Amber Narguille in the coming weeks.

I love sycomore especially in autumn & own both edt & edp. i’m in the minority as i actually prefer the edp even though it leans more feminine. I also reccomend nuit de megeve by eight & bob. I’m not a big fan of the line in general but nuit is a beautiful deep vetiver with coffee i didn’t like it immediately but it’s a real grower 👍

Great video! Antaeus is pure MAGIC! And I never understood why a perfume house would reformulate (or why a person would want a reformulation) a fragrance......it then becomes a DIFFERENT fragrance! I am a bit confused as well about using the word "outdated" to describe a fragrance. Perhaps within a certain context you could say that, but to smell Antaeus for the first time without trying to compare it to something else, it "just is." So perhaps, in the 80s, "men smelled like men, and women smelled like women" but in the year 2020 (and beyond!) that is not the case. So, to say a scent such as Antaeus smells "like a man" just doesn't ring true anymore. It simply smells like itself. All this talk of "gender" is exhausting......and truly irrelevant today. However, your "hairy balls" remark was hilarious! Right along with you, though, I wouldn't change it for the world!

The whole smelling how women want you smell is exactly how I feel about most mens frags. Too sweet or to flowery, no wallop and kind of just like a Glade plug in. I like the smell of very few women’s frags, so that kind of rings true to me.
You were right Eugene, amber absolute smells like SL ambre sultan, and i do own SLAS but i 've never get my nose on TF AA, but it doesnt mean i wont.
What about you eugene? I know you had the opportunities to buy it, and you didnt!!? Why? it was good, and it smells your way, your taste of fragrance.
