    This’s one of the most popular veggies in my home country, Bangladesh. I think kids like to play with it as a colouring agent. I have had this in Australia as well. A friend grew some in a pot and made a curry (with prawn). Thanks :))

      Thanks for sharing that! That is great to know. There are a lot of things we don't fully appreciate here in the US. That curry with prawn sounds very interesting. I need to improve my cooking skills.

    Thank you for this technique! My husband's favorite veggie is spinach but we have a hard time growing it here. The malabar spinach was awesome last year! We loved the leaves, but we also loved the berries sauteed. Thank you for reminding me I need to order more seeds!

    WOW - it seems so much work for you. I just pick the ripe berries and sun dry them and save for sowing next season. That just works perfectly.

      Yes, it was more work. I also saved some the easy way.

    Really cool process. Angel liked that stuff so she saved a ton of the seeds last year but not like that. 9-10 times she would pull a cluster and scrub them by hand. LOL Caught red handed you might say. LOL Will definitely have to try it your way this go since her seeds are sprouting already so Malabar will be in the yard again. Great stuff. Thanks for the share!

    • @MidwestGardener

      It's nice that she likes it, since it grows so well. I chew on the leaves sometimes when I'm out in the garden. I guess grazing you might say. I hope your weather out there is warming up like it is here. Planting time is coming soon.

      UT said you liked it. It's always great to find an edible green that loves the heat. Regular spinach just bolts way to fast. It won't be long and you guys will have that backyard garden thriving again.

    I already ordered all my seeds for this year from 4 different places plus local and then I found out about malabar spinach from your videos. ( I found you yesterday and now I'm binge watching instead of doing chores...) Now I want this seed also. My planting space is small so I must be just going insane...

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol, binge watch all you want :) I appreciate the support! The nice thing about Malabar spinach is that it can be grown vertically, and it loves the heat. Some people like it, and some people not so much. I definitely think it is worth trying for anyone who hasn't grown it. I always seem to start more plants than I have room for. I'm in the middle of the culling process right now.

    I've never grown Malabar spinach, but I may have to try it this year. The vines seem to be kind of ornamental, so I may try growing this on a trellis in my new flower garden.

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A trellis would be perfect. You won't need too many of them, because they really like to grow once it gets hot. Some people like it, and some don't, but you are right....it is kind of ornamental.

    That's a very interesting process. I bet you could dye something with those berries. I've heard about malabar spinach but have never grown it. Does it taste like regular spinach? Around here I have to buy 3 bags of spinach to have enough for us. We are veggie people. Does it bush or vine and need support? I might grow it depending on the space it requires. Thanks for sharing. Have a great rest of the week.

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, I think it would make a great dye. It's a little different than regular spinach. Some people like it, and some people don't. It is a vine, so it needs support. You have a great week too.

    The oil of these seeds is edible. Its oil has 50-52% unsaturated fat (the good one).
