Thanks Scott. Great video - I am waiting for mine. I would point out that - you seem to be 90% wildlife. I am 50/40/10 landscape/wildlife still/wildlife video with a focus on bears/wolves/moose. As a result, I can't memorise buttons for wildlife and easily switch to landscape in the dark. So I heavily use C1, C2, C3. C1 is Landscape of Tripod (AEB, f11, manual focus with assist, safety shift ISO, 2s delay, EFCS). C2 is Landscape/Travel in good light (AEB, F8, general wide area a/f, safety shift, ISO 800, EFCS). C3 is wildlife (electronic, 15fps in H (30 is too much culling), spot focus, spot exposure, -2/3 exposure to not blow out edges of fur, RAW, CFx card...). And then I set up favourite menus - general, landscape, wildlife. General is format, new file, screen brightness... Landscape is AEB, bulb, timer delay.... Wildlife is CRAW on/off, fps, eye, ... I set up Video noting the C3 is default for not switching but pressing red button. Video C3, 4k/30 highest quality, C1 4k/60, C2 4k 120. Not saying my R5 settings are better just pointing out that if you are more of a generalist you might prefer a different strategy then someone like yourself that is 90% wildlife.
Thanks for the info. It's why my video Title, thumbnail, and intros state 'for wildlife' and I don't do an all settings in the camera videos. Kudos for the guys that do the all encompassing setups.
Just want to say thank you for putting this video. I'm new to photography as a hobby, and looking through all the settings was really intimidating. You explained it really well and understandably. Cant wait to take the camera out tomorrow to get some nice bird pics.
Excellent video! My camera arrives tomorrow. I'm like a little kid waiting for Santa ro arrive. Your settings really helped to jumpstart me to get out and start shooting. Many thanks!
Thank you for the video. Just got my R5 mark II yesterday and I’m programming it today. Your video will be helpful. Just one suggestion. Try programming your front depth of field button where your ring finger on your right hand naturally touches to crop mode. Crop mode on my R5 mkii was very helpful in auto focus in certain situations. Give it a try.
Thanks for the tip, but I never use crop mode on my full frames except to see if I have the detail and not too far away to introduce atmospheric distortions. If I need to crop it happens in post so im not stuck to that crop. just a me thing 😃
FYI the purple menu you mention is actually pink- there is a purple which is the network function. I also found that in order to set up the auto focus to servo, I needed to have a lens attached . Another observation I made was that functions are restricted if you don’t have your mode set to time value, shutter priority or manual. Other than that was a great video that was very helpful. How to stop more times than I wanted to so what have been great if you were a little bit slower😊
Thanks. I actually went pretty slow for how I normally talk LOL. But noted for sure. Yes you have ton be in manual for these menus to match what I covered. This video was just to get folks started as I hadn't tested the camera fully out yet. We will have a full walkthrough for wildlife photography soon. it will only cover settings I set, not the entire menu settings walkthrough though.
I'll get this camera only after I get a high quality lens. I jumped on the R6 ii before getting a good lens because of the deal that was available. But this time lens comes first. Can't wait for your review of this camera.
Thanks Scott. I'll probably order in a couple months after you and some others have had some more time with the camera and come out with full reviews. Really appreciate your videos.
Thank you for giving us your setup it works great for me. There are a few quirks and a setting I think would be useful to add. I often will want to prefocus on a branch for instance or a distance to make focusing easy. The frustrating problem I had was when the camera went to sleep and turned back on the focus was lost. Canon it seems set as default a setting… Retract lens at power off… after I disabled this setting the focus remains locked on when it wakes up. The quirk, and maybe it is my camera or I am just an idiot, is I could not get pre-continuous shooting to work. I found the answer by accident but think maybe there may be others struggling with the same problem. In the setup for back button shooting we took focus away from the shutter button and just had exposure. We then assigned eye tracking focus to the… auto focus on… button in back. I thought starting focus with the back button would start the pre- continuous shooting… it does not, at least on my camera. What I finally found was that in order to start pre- continuous shooting I still had to press the shutter button half way then it worked fine. At least that is how it works on my camera. I like it that way because I can decide when to use it or not use it while still focusing with the back button. Butch
Great video as per usual Scott, can’t wait for the next and most important one! I’ve had the r5 for over 3 years and still not decided whether to bite the bullet and go for the mkII? no pressure but I’ll be waiting for your verdict! 😂👍📷
This is a great video that helped me quickly set up my R5ii..... a bit different than the R5 in the menus. The focus in the field is still a bit tricky after only 1 day, but all should come in time. I'm a hybrid wildlife/landscape shooter so have the far right button on back set to servoone shot so I can quickly toggle if needed. I'm still confused a bit with the "second focus box" that appears in my viewfinder and throws off my focus sometimes (perhaps it's the whole area tracking???) I'm also taking a bit of video and looking forward to your settings for that part. I found your videos in the field with the R5ii just stunning! Thank you for sharing all this great content.
@@WILDALASKA Thanks for this added information about the Lock spot AF. I will try this ... there's a bit of a learning curve, even from coming from the R5. I'll try to set one of my back buttons to this setting.
I’m eager to hear your experiences photographing with the R5 Mark II, especially the animal and bird AF and how this new body compares to the Nikon Z9.
Hi Scott, you're the first birder with a set up guide and thank you. I was wondering if you could save your settings to a card and then make them available as a download so we can put on an SD card and set our cameras up? I'm going to get a chance to try an R5ii out for a couple of hours soon and I'd love to be able to use your settings as a starting point. Thanks Noel from New Zealand
@WILDALASKA Just got in from shooting hummingbirds. I've been to this garden before with my R5 + 100-500 mm L. The animal eye detect AF was fantastic. It worked much better than the R5. Also, I used the AUTO case, and that was great too. I am really happy that I chose to upgrade. I hope you enjoy the camera as well.
I like the shutter release button on current method, which I set to spot. I then set the AF button to eye af just like you. So if I want to use a single point I just hit the shutter button. If I want eye tracking I start with the AF button and it doesn't get overwritten when I hit the shutter release.
At the end your saying single point to auto af, but earlier you said you dont really use the auto AF very often. I think you meant to say you use single point to get intiail focus and they use the Eye AF mode? That is how I shoot so that would make sense to me. The only difference is instead of the whole screen AF tracking button (I dont use that at all) I have a second focus button for an additional focus mode (usually expanded spot with assist)
Nice video - picked mine up late this afternoon. Can’t wait to get out there with it. I am really looking forward to your thoughts on it. I’m keeping my r5 vi as a second - probably for rain and snow. I’m heading out to Vancouver Island for 2 weeks this weekend and plan to run the heck out of the new body - should have lots to shoot over there.
Thank you so much for that excellent video tutorial. The first of its kind so far. one question...How do you set up the Touch and Drag AF Point in the R5 II. There doesn't seem to be a section in the Menu to select that. Just got mine today! Thank you!
My R5M2 is coming in tomorrow and also have the R6M2. I am going to mirror as much as I can from my R6 on the custom settings. I just need to see how the eye control focus will play into for using it instead of how I have it currently since the R6 doesn’t have that feature.
Nice info. I'm looking for a way to turn on pre-capture with either a custom setting or a button selection. I don't want it on all the time, but would like it to be easily accessible.
@@WILDALASKA Thanks, I think it is going to have to be a Custom Setting because there are a couple of features that I want to be able to turn on quickly, but only in certain scenarios.
The timing of this could not have been better. I am waiting for my new batteries to charge so there are a few settings I will need to revisit since you can't even set them with the old batteries.
I am not sure why you switch the shutter button to meter only. If you keep the shutter button on AF/meter and set it to spot focus you can use the spot focus to initially acquire focus if you need to. Set your AF-ON button to eye tracking. Canon has it set up so that a customized back button overrides the shutter button and when you push the shutter button it will not attempt to refocus. Try it and set your image review to show active focus points only either in camera or through DPP. You will see that eye tracking overrides the spot focus. If you do it this way you have one less button to push with your thumb. Makes it easier to adust focus point using the joy stick or in my case, use my thumb to change EC. Not only did I test this myself on the R5, R6 and R7, but I talked to a Canon tech and he verified it.
Ya it doesn't work that way, as it over rides it a LOT when you do it the way plus back button dial focus helps you acquire your subject much much faster in a ton of scenarios. and I never move my focus point either. No need as im working a focus plane, not a point.
Great content (as usual:) ). Can you offer any advice on the lens IS switch settings on the 100-500mm lens for bird photography? I just purchased an R5 Mark II, (arriving in a couple of days!) and the 100-500mm lens, and I am confused as to which IS setting to use. Most birds I shoot are still or slowly moving, with occasional birds in flight when I get lucky, and I know I will not be able to switch modes on the lens. I am not concerned about whether the IS is active when I am just looking through the camera as long as it stabilizes correctly when I take the picture. Having it stabilize when I press the shutter half-way as I am used to on my current camera (an OM1) would be a plus. Thank you.
Thank you for this very helpful video. I've watched it twice now. Do you know how to use eye control focus combined with back button focus?
