Oscar W. Schaefer, my grandfather, directed the Clearfield, Pennsylvania American Legion band at the 1927 convention. Out of thirty bands they placed fifth, with a third place in concert. My great-grandfather, H. Clarke Thayer, was the director of President McKinley's official band and arranged and performed the hymn, "Lead Kindly Light" for President Mckinley's funeral.
I can only imagine the emotions those men felt when they returned to the battlefields where they experienced so much horror or the cemeteries where their brothers were buried. I have seen what happens when a Vietnam Vet finds a name on The Wall that he wasn't sure was there or not.
Found this from Ian forgotten weapons. Based on this historical event and journey, makes for a good short historical fiction movie. A nice fictional or even historical biopic or based on true events movie can be made from this, with some good actors and good cinematography.
I didnt know this was a thing until today. ForgottenWeapons sent me here.
