      It’s only houses worth over 2 million plus 15% tax. Average New Zealanders are not buying those houses and even then they will be at an advantage.

      @@unknownentity742 until BlackRock offer you 2mill for your 1mill home, then all 1 mill homes become 2 mill homes so they can be sold to foreigners. This targets pre existing houses in limited supply with potentially unlimited money that these big overseas corps have, which will lead to even more inflation. Yes good for current home owners but we need to be patriotic not greedy.

      It is Impractical for National think they can tax foreign casinos even if they are legal, Would care enough about losing revenue from a nz compliance tax and not just geo block nz customers and their credit cards.

    I don't want housing to be a "luxury" Mrs Willis. I want housing to be something everyone can afford vis a vis fulfilling human dignity. We cannot have a prosperous and safe society if people are doing it hard for long periods due to market insecurity and price gougers, of which the housing market is a chief contributor to these problems.

      Therefore we need a solid long term plan like the one in front of you. Not another weak winning over policy like the free dental care, whose paying for that? Smells like more tax. nobody wants to work in this country because the labour govt piss money against the wall and need to rob half of our payslip to pay for all their mistakes.

      I agree, and one way of doing that is to follow Hong Kong Law:
      1) Filipino helpers can never become residents
      Current NZ law allows 100 to come to NZ every year on a working holiday visa, then get easy residency, then buy land. Do 100 new zealanders go there each year and do the same? No!

      That's what they're doing! Listen! By making the foreign buyers that want to live here pick up the slack so we don't have to out of our own taxpayers pocket. This plan is lowering house prices and still covers all labours holes they've left behind through silly spending.

    Rich people buying houses has a flow on effect for those at the bottom. Ask people from London and New York who are being priced out of their own city by billionaires and millionaires.

      National should have never advocated income tax changes. It should focus on reducing government spending ( wasted spending ) and use savings to reduce debt ( + interest cost) and top up the super fund. Opps almost forgot . Improve health services to the piont were private providers have low customer. numbers.
      This would make them different to Act and NZ First.

      All respect. Wonder why the 'National Front Row Props' often didn't include Nicola Willis ? To be fair, with a Caucus of only 33 MPs (total) each has to cover a huge ground. No-one should be surprised the spade work hasn't been done. Then whatever 'hasbeen' must 'align with Act'. What comes out is a 'mess of pottage' ?

    Great work Jack! National deserves to be grilled for what they've proposed. A lot of it doesn't make sense. At least free dental is clear to understand and accept. Nat wants to use one hand to give us "extra money in the pocket" while using the other hand to take even more money away from behind our backs.

Something that would not have needed to be done in the first place if National did not demolish, or sell off state houses, while ignoring calls to increase housing stock for a decade.

    Until I heard her at this interview I was going to vote national. Now I have second thoughts. She does not know four years from one year and no contingency plan. Madam ever heard of "anything that can go wrong will go wrong" that is why contingencies have to be provided for.

    I thought she would be better prepared. One idea Jack raised that made me think , If someone has a 1.5-1.7 million dollar home, why not raise it to make it legal for foreign buyers? ( they will most likely have a higher financial tolerance than your avg kiwi. It could be highly inflationary.

      Also the NZers outbid in the $2M + bracket by foreign investors, who's money almost doubles in value when converted to $NZ, will be pushing up competition in houses under $2M which will cause NZ house prices to increase again. It's not only an inflationary and unproductive investment scam it will also leave more NZers tenants in their own land and seriously risks our FTA with China. There's nothing good in this policy for ordinary NZers.

    When National's foreign buyers tax fails to bring in the revenue they claim it will, they will inevitably cut public services in order to compensate. This is on top of the cuts already proposed which, in conjunction with a pitiful tax break for our lowest earners and suppressing benefit and minimum wage rises, will be catastrophic for the poor and middle classes

      In 1975 . I saw of oz youth coming to nz to backpack, hitchhike, work etc. Airfares were 70.00 and living was $2 @ day.
      NZ First says. Let's take back NZ . In 1970 Uni was free. No GST. Targeted sales taxes and income tax rates were higher.
      Who knows, what the best thing is.

    That's right, flood NZ with foreign buyers, hoik up inflation yet more, and we get a measly $30 per week averaged out... this is just insane. I will never trust National after what they did to NZ under Key, sold us off to the Chinese. She wants to be the Finance Minister, but all she did was sneer at him and couldn't answer his basic mathematical questions (which any competent economist should have easily). I have no regard for Labour either, but National? Dear god... we'll all be serfs in our own country.

      What pisses me off is that 100 Filipino's come to nz each year on a working visa, get easy residency, then buy land. Very hard NZ to get residency over there, and can not buy land! NZ should cancel that agreement and follow Hong Kong law - filipino helpers can never get residency.

      Excargley, Key was traveling the world marketing his business, and his rich friend. He sold out NZ to foreign investors.

      @@vsstdtbs3705 The Philippines has about 11% more land area than NZ, and a population about 23x larger. And you're having a cry about 100 of them coming over? And not being able to buy land/get residency 'easily' there? The average salary in NZ is 6x that it is in the Philippines. Do you know what that says? It means they've had to work bloody hard to get enough money to buy land here. I've met dozens upon dozens of Filipinos in my life, and they've all been incredibly hard-working and generally good people. I'd take any of them over a sizeable chunk of the existing population, as a friend or employee. They are absolutely a net benefit to the country.
      Oh, and FYI, it's incredibly difficult (if even possible) to get residency/buy property in most of Asia. Take your racist crap elsewhere.

    Foreign buyers DO buy "family homes" (many of those) as rental investments, you're "modeling" seems to have overlooked THAT.

    Bwahaha the Finance Minister cant give an average because of variations, that was like pulling teeth. Also the Finance Minister for National talked about false hypotheticals even though its her model and her assumptions at least she got something right about her model though, false hypotheticals. The Finance Minister also talked about the real world even though she had a Professor of Taxation who worked for KPMG questioning the validity of her model. Headline fiscal modelling, chuck something on TV and do not give the model for actual scrutiny, and repeat the mantra of our modelling has been carefully prepared and our numbers have been verified. 🤣🤣

    National looked like it was sleep walking to victory and then it starts talking about pouring petrol on an already overheated property market. Where is all this foreign money going to come from? Ah, mostly from a country that the U.S.A is increasingly at odds with geopolitically. A smart long term strategy? Where is the desire for real tax reform? It is more inflationary to borrow and pay interest on debt than to just create the money for hospitals and schools. Most money in the system is now electronic anyway. Why not abolish income taxes and just have a consumption tax? The economy would boom.

Clue: the first National-Luxon Annual Conference featured a hush-hush presentation by a former Thatcher adviser. That's 1979-83 'Thatcher Years' out of date (isn't it ?)

    If the new duties and taxes fall short of expectations and the fact will stop other taxes ( designed save for Auckland's spending needs ( recall National stopped the Auckland Habour bridge toll, it would have funded so must since 1979) ) . It clearly they will borrow!

      Why did they stop the tolls on the bridge I wonder .The Lyttelton tunnel was paid for by tolls and when I was over in Brisbane, one of the bridges was paid for by tolls .it's a great idea.

    I just watched a video in 1975. It was about Oz kids coming to hitchhike around work at Cafes etc. They could travel by for $2 a day. Airfares were $70 from oz.
    What party can return us to those days ? Recall 1970 free Uni, affordability of homes.

    It is good to hear this MP acknowledged action by labour slowed the house market at the upper level. Recall in 1973, labour introduced the property speculation tax. It slowed things, but National removed it in 1975.

    National is nothing more than a branch office of property investors. Luxon roughly owns how many properties- about 7. They effectively want to allow more totally unproductive use of capital by shifting the bright line test and increasing the size of the tax free hole.
    Where is the vision? Where is the strategy? Where is the productivity growth?
    National want to get NZ back on track - yes to being a property market with a small economy tacked in as an afterthought.

    If GST was imposed on exports? What income would governments get?
    Imports have GST applied and paid to Customs Dept.
    Currently exports are zero rated, although businesses can claim an input credit for the GST it paid in creating the good or service.
    The export GST rate could be 5%. What revenue would this create?

      Technically it is applied at point of sale which is in a foreign country so would that not be out of reach to tax a foreign buyer in their country of residence for money to cone back to our government ? Just a question
