Thank you for this! I have been hitting a wall every time I try to list my products and I don’t know why I lose motivation to put in the work. I have all of my products and photos for my listings finished yet I seem to get stuck when it comes to doing the descriptions and SEO/tags. I keep changing my photos and the look of my shop because I want it to be perfect. It may just be an underlying personal issue with being afraid to fail that’s stopping me - but this video helped me get in the mindset of just putting my head down and getting it done! Thank you for sharing all of your great and REAL knowledge of Etsy. I get so overwhelmed with all of the fluff and crazy “must dos” that others talk about in Etsy videos and I appreciate your simplistic view of how to create a successful shop.
Can you do a video about how you stay motivated and inspired and what your work day looks like?

I don't know that it would be helpful to see my day...I did that in another video a while back, but basically I work and try not to waste time. And if I do waste time, I don't beat myself up for it, I just get back to work.

Ah yes the human nature of enjoying things and procrastination lol.
For me, I struggle with bookkeeping and listing new things. I make the product, do the keyword research make a draft page and then idk I procrastinate on staging and editing photos. It’s so tedious and such a process! I like it, but it takes so long. I always struggle at the end of the marathon I get there and see the finish line, but drag myself to get there lol! I’m not sure what it is but I’ve always been like this even when I was in school I’d have no problem starting and getting things like 85% done and then just get frustrated with it.
When I started my shop last year, I was pushing myself too much too soon and it actually caused me to procrastinate more because I was overwhelmed and burned out with my full time job and the pandemic. I ended up taking a break for a few months after the holidays and scaling back. It helped me get my mojo and creativity back too.
What’s also helped me is to journal and make an agenda for the day or month. I prioritize 3 big things that need to get done then smaller things. I also turn on lofi or podcasts about business or art, I find if I make my environment feel more professional then I’ll act that way for some time. If I watch videos it’s usually streams of people working in their own shop in the background. Idk what it is but it’s like if I’m at a gym or see someone cleaning or eating healthy, it motivates me to get off my butt and do it too.
I also learned to optimize my time by working with what my brain prefers. I’m more productive first thing in the morning versus later in the day because then I’m worrying about dinner and other things. If I work at night I’m too stimulated and can’t sleep.
Your callouts actually reminded me that before I go on vacation I really need to back up my shop photos and such to my cloud and hard drive. I’ve been meaning to do that, but have neglected to do it… along with adding some current expenses to my quick books. You would think I’d learn last year when I did it all in January during tax season lol, but I just haven’t wanted to which is stupid because everything took me at most 3-4 hours on the weekend. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I’m going to write that in for this weekend to do list.
We totally need to hold ourselves accountable, but I think we also need to remember to give ourselves breaks and time away from making and selling. I get it’s some sellers only income, but for me the constant grind for months drove me to procrastinate more and well fall behind!

    • @KaraBuntin

Thank you for sharing. When I list items in my Etsy shop I make the deal with myself to list an "old" photographed one and then I can do a "newly" photographed one. That works for me. This year I have a goal to list minimum 20 items each week. That's just 3 a day. I get better and better at it. Most weeks I succeed, but not all. The goal should be a bit hard to hit, right?

Don't pay attention to the tools at first, use your stats on Etsy. The grades that they give you aren't given by Etsy so they don't mean a lot. They're just there to let you know if you need to check something or not All of my listings have a B grade or lower on purpose!

Here's one way to write a decent description: Pretend you are describing it over the phone to a relative so they could find it on a shelf. Pretend you show them the item and ask them, "What is this"? "What is it for?" "What occasion?"

I started my shop about 2 month ago, I got 4 sales from friends and family, and 1 sale from someone I have no connexion with. I get 5 to 10 visits a day on my shop, but what drives me crazy is that more than 80% of the trafic comes from google... And almost none from etsy search. What I sell doesn't have much competition on etsy, so I wonder why my shop doesn't show up in etsy search while my listings are often in the top 3 organic search results in google shopping, same for google shopping ads. I didn't focus on building google SEO at all, in fact, I tried to follow your valuable advices for etsy SEO. Any ideas ? Maybe I should build my own website... I don't know really.

They make a ton of sales and a ton of money overall, but the average Etsy seller makes a little less than $3000 a year, according to a statement they made at one point by accident (probably.) You have to take into account that that's an average, which is a terrible way to measure anything because one outlier will drag the number way up or down. I personally make around $100K on Etsy for the past 3 or 4 years, but that's after being on the platform for 10 years and actually treating it like it's a job. A lot of people do it part time so their income isn't going to be as high, and that will lower the averages too. The people in my EShop program tend to increase their incomes after joining, but some of that is the fact that if they join my program they're not looking for easy tips and tricks and shortcuts, they want to run an online business the sustainable way. But it is possible to make Etsy and selling online a full-time business if you do the work.
