An important thing I think many people in this comments section are forgetting is that 'Plastic Love' makes it clear that the previous relationship(s) of Mariya's character have crashed and burned hard. So the character has seemingly lost all faith in actual love.
After listening to both mixes, I think I can tell why this one sounds so good and in my opinion works much better than the opposite mix. Plastic Love has a really strong harmony, and a good vocal melody. On the other hand, Never Gonna Give You Up has a really strong and catchy vocal melody, but not a particularly interesting harmony. So, in the opposite mix you have a rather plain harmony with a good melody, but in this mix, you have a very nice and strong harmony with a super catchy vocal melody. And it works almost perfect!
The fact that the two songs are antithesis but the vocals are compatible on each instrumental. feels like they're both in love but with different feelings for each other
