The Importance of Decluttering Small Things

  • As a professional home organizer, I've spent a lot of time in homes and storage units helping people declutter. Over the years, I've seen small clutter add up quickly and become an energy drain and take up precious storage space.
Small clutter is insidious, because we think that it's so insignificant that it won't make a difference, and small things end up staying around longer. Then things that we don't need, use, or love (or even want) can end up taking up precious storage space. Then we think we need more storage space, but the key might be simplifying and learning to spot the little energy stealers around us in our homes.
This video explains the importance of small things and how quickly they add up. I hope that this video provides you with some motivation as you take care of your home and/or declutter a space that you feel has too much stuff. Thank you for watching! 😊

I agree with you so much!! I was in a decluttering rut because I felt blocked because I have some huge furniture I want to rehome or give away. And because of that big furniture, I'd just look at it and be like "oh it's so hard to declutter, I need to find a solution for these" while being surrounded by small clutter all around (just stuff with no monetary or emotional value). So I started decluttering those small things and I've made so much progress in one room already. This was about 3 or 4 days ago and I'd been postponing working on this rooms for like 2 years.

Hi Diana 🤗 Ah, I love this! The compounding effect is so interesting :)!! That must feel sooo good! Congratulations on the progress that you've made 🎉 🎊 I hope that it's still going great, that you have made even more progress, and that you end up with a beautiful space that feels renewed and amazing 😃 🌱 🌺

@@LifeAsIWritethank you for your reply! Yes, the room is almost empty save for two pieces of furniture that I can't deal with yet. It's already fit to be a playroom or bedroom! I'm still progressing on the whole house! Videos like these inspire me! I thank you!

We don't really have much of the "big stuff" left to declutter, so whenever I decide to declutter I choose a space and all of a sudden I have a shoppingbag full of smaller things that are just going out of my home! I've made so much space within cupboards and boxes like this!

That's a mindful and clever way to declutter! I love it! It's so funny how much space small items compounded can take up 🙌 🙌 This is such an inspiring comment! Thank you for sharing 😊 🙏

Hope my parents would understand the importance of decluttering. They love buying things but don't like letting go old stuff and it makes the house looks tiny. 😅

Hi Guia! I love this comment! Clutter can make a good-sized space feel so small... I'm making a video on living space vs storage space that relates to what you said 😊 I think decluttering feels really good once you start to reclaim your space, so maybe your parents will start decluttering, and then love it once they are on a roll 😃💕

Great point on the small things. I never really
looked at it the way you explained. The big things are so visually distracting so you always focus on those but open a drawer and it’s full of receipts and small nonsense. Another wonderful video Mika. I can listen to
    you all day. LoL. ✌🏼N❤️

Hi Peter! I took a short break from TH-cam in December, so I'm just now catching up on the comments, and, ahhh, you're so right about opening a drawer, and it's full of the little things- I like the way you worded it!
I'm currently working on the video you suggested in the community post about combining wellness, home, and writing, and I will have it out sometime this week 🙌 🙌 I will reply to your comment on the community post right after I upload it! 🤗

Thank you for this great reminder Mika! We think that it's the decluttering of big things that will make the most impact, maybe because they feel like the most daunting to tackle. So we leave them until we feel we have the time and/or energy to do something about it. In the meantime, the small things are piling up... 😕
Re. doing things that take less than 2 minutes right away is something I sometimes struggle with and I have to remind myself that I will have to do it sooner or later. I think that we often don't do those small less than 2 minute things because we imagine that they will take much longer to deal with and that we therefore don't have the time right then and there. I have many times been surprised at how quick and easy it is to do a small something that I have been procrastinating and pushing off for ages 😁
I too believe that objects absorb energy, the story about the vase was very interesting. And it goes for our own stuff as well...
Wishing you a lovely day 😊🌺

Thank you for your awesome comment and insight! Ahahaha, it's so great to read this right now, because I referenced the two-minute rule again in a new video that I just uploaded about daily habits- that two-minute rule has been a game-changer for me, both in my home and business 😊 It's a great point about reminding yourself that you have to do it sooner or later as a motivator ✅
And I agree with what you said about both overestimating and underestimating the amount of time it takes to do something! Thank you again for your thoughts, as they are all great points! I wish you a lovely day too 😃🌺

@@LifeAsIWrite Thank you for taking the time to reply Mika! 😊I thought of you the other day when I was going through a few small chores that needed doing, like putting away receipts, downloading and printing a form that I needed to fill in etc. I have a tendency to write things such as information I find useful, things I need to remember etc. on tiny bits of paper (I have not yet managed to go over to a notebook system...😕). I end up with loads of small pieces of paper scattered on my desk and I go through them now and then. So some of the older ones I had encountered multiple times, each time having that uh, that's right I need to do that 😩 feeling. But on Sunday late afternoon, I didn't feel like doing anything big tidying or organising wise so I thought I would do a couple of those smaller things. it felt really good afterwards 😊
Would you consider doing a little home tour at some point? If it's something you would feel comfortable doing of course! I love watching home tours, in particular of smaller spaces as I find them much more relatable. From the few glimpses I have caught here and there in your videos, your home looks really lovely 😎 Have a lovely day 😊🌺💜

That is awesome! Adding in some productivity and getting in some relaxing sounds like a lovely Sunday afternoon! Oooohh, and just an idea- for those small pieces of paper that get scattered... I don't know if this is a good suggestion or not, but sometimes I've seen it work well for my clients when they put those bits of paper in a small pretty box or small container (with no lid), or this sounds random, but a decorative bowl... that way, you can easily reach in and shuffle through them, but it keeps the desk pretty clear. Sorry, that's totally unsolicited advice, but the idea just popped into my head 😁
A home tour is a great idea! I think that it would be a fun video to make! Hahaha, it might be a very short video because the place is so small (about 1/3 of it is always in the background) 😃 😂 But I will find a way to make it interesting. I have a few videos in the queue beforehand, but I've added it to my list, and I'll reply to this comment when I post the video so that you know 😊 🌺 💕

@@LifeAsIWrite Thank you Mika for your lovely reply! 🤗 I'm glad that you like the idea of making a home tour 😎 I'm looking forward to it 👏 I do realise that you have a small home and that we have seen glimpses of it here and there (referring to your 30 day minimalism challenge where we got to see it from other angles than your usual background). But the size of your home is what makes it all the more interesting! We all have a minimum amount of things that we need for our everyday lives but also items that we want to keep because they make us happy. It can sometimes be a tricky balance, in particular in smaller spaces... I also really appreciate the little I've seen of your home (I like your style) so I'm curious to see more and to see how you have organised everything 😊 The idea of having a sea view also really speaks to my soul...
As for your "unsolicited advice", I don't mind it at all, in particular as you presented it in such a sweet and considerate way 😍I will think about it. My desk is so cluttered that I don't even know where I would put a pretty box/container/decorative bowl at the moment 😟 Some of my notes do end up in boxes sooner or later though, you know the "deal with this later" kind of boxes 🙄😂 I hope to come up with a system at some point... I do sincerely appreciate your suggestion. I just need time to process it and see if and how I could make it work.
Looking forward to your next video! Sending you hugs from France and wishing you a lovely day/evening or whatever time of day you read this 🤗🌺💗
