This model belongs in a museum. Actually, the Smithsonian is where it belongs. The Nautilus deserves a spot just like the Enterprise got one. Beautiful work and most impressive. I can't wait to see this lit up in all its glory.

Ken did a better job of laying out the interior than the studio did. But then the boat's design changed so many times before filming, the interior's end result was a mixture of several stages.

Thank you for rationalizing an issue I have with movies of all kinds--the disconnect between exterior volume and interior spaces. That disconnect derails my willing suspension of disbelief. I have enough trouble in the real world with navigating through interior and exterior spaces. During the 1990's I visited Disneyland Paris several times and enjoyed their Nautilus walk-through despite the total disconnect between interiors and exteriors. I've toured a Russian Cold War diesel-powered submarine and two American WW2 submarines (the Drum and the Bowfin). Worse, I've crawled through airplanes and tanks both on display and professionally. Living in an M577A2 Tracked Command Post Carrier isn't the same thing as camping out in an RV but the same principles apply.
Making the miniature seem real obviously was a lot of time and effort. I doubt that you could force convicts to do that as punishment for a crime. The things we do for love--this was a labor of love. Now you're going to light up the interior! You had to do a lot of reverse engineering--ever see Galaxy Quest? That would be an interesting adjunct to building scale model submarines--pretending that a pool was outer space and building spaceship-styled submarines. Starting with the flying sub from Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (no way to make it both fly and operate as a submarine!) an operating RC spaceship would be even more impressive--and if there was a twin static-display model with all of the interiors on display, that would be a museum all by itself in miniature. At least one museum built an "Ark" life-size and conducts tours through it, but I doubt that the boat would float!
I have long lost count of the scale models I've built. Most have been exterior only, some have been sectioned so that I could build interiors (Revelle made a Polaris submarine during the Sixties--and the model company had to answer bunches of questions regarding how they made their interiors so accurate!). Scales of 1/12 to 1/6 allowed me to make some features work. Then there are doll houses and for boys, forts and castles! Hobbies take up space. A workshop and a display area are both needed.
I'm reminded of the story of a man who built a boat in his living room--but when he finished, he realized that the boat wouldn't fit through the doors or windows. Oopsie! Back around 1965 I was in an indoor mall in Biloxi or Gulfport (MS) and they had a boat show. All of the boats I saw were too big to fit through the doors I saw--there had to be some sort of larger doorway to the display area, but I couldn't find it--and I suspected that they had to take down the masts on the sailboat. Scheels and Cabellas have indoor displays that had to be built inside the building--a full-sized airplane hanging from the ceiling and one Scheels had a ferris wheel. That leads up to this question--in your planning stage, did you consider how you were going to move the Nautilus out of your workshop and to display locations?
That model must weigh more than 200 pounds given size and materials. That tells me "use a forklift," and I need to design lifting points reinforced so that whatever crane or other machine I use can carry the model around without destroying it. On automobiles there are jack points and tow points--simply shoving a jack anywhere or hooking a tow chain can rip apart most cars. Tow truck operators have to figure out those points. Car designers have to build those jack points and tow points into their vehicles. Being able to dismantle the model for transport is nice, can reduce the size and individual component weight for easy transport. At the 2004 G I Joe Collectors Club Convention held at the Contemporary Resort in Walt Disney World, many of the dioramas had to be built inside the convention show room and then demolished (not merely disassembled) because their design wasn't modular enough. Then there was the problem of a very heavy 1:6th-scale RC Tiger tank that weighed several hundred pounds--the monster had to be displayed on a custom-built platform because the folding lunchroom tables lacked the payload rating. That tank was almost too big to drive through the doors.
Scale models, movie sets, theme park attractions and real-world machines all have different requirements. It is UNFAIR of me to expect movie sets to conform to the miniatures used for exterior shots. Model making companies that produce kits to make submarines with interiors have my respect. In the real world, the crew spaces and storage areas are often afterthoughts--"build it and let the crew sort themselves out."
Thanks again for sharing your model. You put a lot of research, thought, time, effort and love into your Nautilus project.

I think if it were to be in a museum it would have to take up an entire room and not just confined to single display. Each separate piece would have to be under glass on a wheel so it could turn to show off as much interior detail as possible with a small picture of the sub with an arrow showing where on the ship it fits. A separate model of the completed sub could be in a separate display in the middle of the room with THIS particular deep dive video on display at 4 different areas so as many people could watch in part or in full as they wish. There should also be two walls featuring a large-scale blueprint. Perhaps along the walls there could be pipes and assorted gadgets to add to the "feel" of a submarine and the general lighting scheme could be splashes of blues and greens. Just a thought. But OMG what a stunning and incredible achievement.

Back in 1988 my wife and I went to Disney World. At the time, the 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea ride with the Nautilus was still in operation. As you perhaps know, Disney sells a hat for EVERYTHING. One of my cousins who collects different hats asked me to try and find him one that was unusual. I looked and looked at all the gift shops which were themed with the attractions and rides but could not find anything that truly stood out. Then we got to the 20000 Leagues ride. The attendants that were directing people through the cordons all wore the horizontal striped sailor shirts with Watch Hats (similar to Chauffeur's caps) with the stylized "N" and Trident above the brim representing the Nautilus. BINGO!!! I found it! So I asked where I could get one. They sort of looked puzzled and said "I don't think they sell them here". I could not believe it! It's not often that Disney misses a revenue/marketing opportunity.

Breathtaking Ken Dowd and Bob. Every modeler-maker needs to see this series, beautiful. I am a book collector, I grew very fond of Disney Studios illustrations of 20 000 Leagues in their boxed hardbacks and thought If i could find a good hardback of Verne's novel i would tip them in.
It turned out the Navel Institute Press published 20 000 Leagues in a unabridged, annotated and illustrated edition (restored from the original French texts) in 1993 by Walter Miller and Frederick Walter. Recommended.

Ken is, in my opinion, one of a small number of superb master model craftsmen, such as Rojas Bazan & Young C. Park (both of whom have scratch built incredibly detailed, large scale aircraft models from metal, & by using hand fabrication methods).
This model of the Disney Nautilus submarine is simply outstanding (clearly) in every way; detail, design, planning, craftsmanship & creativity, to say the least, probably. Since there were no overall definite interior layout arrangement plans available for the movie submarine (I gather), of course several interior compartments & associated details & size would need to be based on Ken's own analysis, research & best determination, of which he clearly gave much consideration. That the model was constructed to be disassembled, with very closely fitting sub assemblies, is also amazing, as a stand alone feature of outstanding craftsmanship.
I believe model should definitely be preserved in museum conditions.

Seriously, forget cramped carbon fiber death traps to go to the Titanic. Someone should build this nautilus in real life. Not just because it would be visually impressive and Steampunk fans would be floored, but to show the world that it could have been done as a testament to Jules Verne and the character of Nemo. It doesn't have to dive more than a couple hundred feet and obviously can't be nuclear powered, but still, it would be amazing.

ONCE you get that all the way you want it-- you could have a company laser scan it all-- and turn it into a KIT-- to be reproduced and SOLD to modelers-- and make a blooming FORTUNE!!! (get Disney permission, though).. Then many many others could build this too.. THAT is absolutely AMAZING...BETTER than the original movie one...

That model would be amazing if he 3D printed it. The fact that he hand crafted it is incredable. If only there were cameras small enough to move around inside the intact model and still have decent picture quality.
A tourable, textured and lit version built in something like Unreal 5 based on this would be SO popular.

If you know the island where he built the Nautilus was a ship graveyard, which isn't really specified in the novel, but vulacnia in Disney's version, as well as ofc after he built the nautilus he was sinking vessels, that's how he got all the supplies to build the Nautilus and survive. He wasn't like shipping items to him.....I don't think?

Impressive build infact impressive isn't exactly enough I think it's beauty and the mans talent are amazing stupendous and the exactness and is probably the best part of this seven foot version. I've seen a few as I'm a fan of the film as I became when I was just a child in the late 1960's. Now I haven't seen one on you tube in a long time I thanks for sharing !😊🇺🇦🕊peace must come !

Fantastic model! The interior detail is outstanding!! 😳 what would be a great thing to do if it can be done?? Would be to do a video “fly through” of the interior using a small fibre optic endoscopic camera slowly moving through each section then SPEED IT UP😄 would look AWESOME!!

It’s unbelievable that you crafted all of this by hand! I’m just awe struck.

Ive said for year-- it is NOT to scale--- no accurate proportions. IF the side window were correct..the rest of the sub would have be a LOT bigger to be to correct scale!!! IF the window were accurate-- there could only be ONE floor- not several- and it just would NOT work dimensionally.. It's a BEAUTIFUL design- and I've always loved it- but the dimensions would NOT work.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was the first book I read as a boy. It was my favorite ride at Walt Disney World and I love the movie. I have been aboard the USS Nautilus SSN-571 in Connecticut.
Mr. Dowd's model is absolutely amazing!

@25:17 he says he doesn't know what it does. That my friend is an "Inverted Stagilator". It lubricates the "Chrome Plated Muffler Bearing", which in turn, offsets the vibration caused by the Geezel Strap. I hope this clarifies it for you.

Amazing. Brilliant! What a cool artist.
This needs interior lighting asap! Using lights, cutouts of people, and shadows from spinning machines - would really bring the inside to life easily.
Needs spinning lights. A fire in one corner using red fabric and a fan like old Hollywood tricks. Needs lights casting shadows from cutouts of people.
    My two cents. 🎉

Damn ,gentlemen this is Awesome ! One of y Great Uncles was inWW 2 Silent Service on the USSS Spadefish and then as a ElectricalEngineer after the war he went to work for Philco And wastheir top Repairman after his retirement. he wound up building Scale replicas of the Spadefish. that operated. By Remote Control including diving ,shooting Torpedos ,Surfacing and performing all of the operations of a WW2 Submarine they were commissioned by the Smithstonian. to build a Scale Model with the detail they used and were compensated Financially and the boat was put on Display. in the Museumn FYI. the agreement. was this boat would not be a functioning model with all the electronics all though. it was built that they knew what. Electronics would operate it if it ever was desired ? they never went down that path and sadly my Uncle has passed since then he was also honored by the United States Navy for his Service and dedication to the Silent Service Vetrans Association where my Uncle built and towed another Scale Spadefish model in Parades and other Venues that boat was built out of Aluminum and was about 17 feet long when completed the diving Remote Control Submarines were finished out at right around 9 feet Bow to Stern and that dimension was because it would fit inside my Uncles Station .wagon he had at that time so he and my Aunt could still travel in their own car to events
