Fully Functional Flying Sub From Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea - RC Submarine

  • A little Sci-Fi for you fans of the 60's series. This is the Flying Sub that was berthed in the hold of the Seaview. Propulsion is via a pair of simple bilge pumps, and we threw in some high-powered LED lighting, just for good measure!
Oh, and just a note for you smart-aleks with your (utterly repetitive and exceptionally ignorant) comments about it not being fully functional if it doesn't fly.. You're so witty! You should get your own comedy special. Actually no... you're not. You're irritating.

Marvellous. What a wonderful nostalgia kick. I was 12 years old when Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea appeared on TV in 1964. I may be showing my age at 70 but the little flying sub still looks futuristic. I'd love to see how the onboard camera performed - especially the encounter with the fearsome, giant sea dog and the escape into the deep. Great model.

I was the same age as you then and I had many of the same joys of watching until the storylines got too sci=fi. I remember the sea weed monsters. Richard Basehart and David Hedison. That and Time Tunnel.

Always thought the Seaview was the best looking sub ever. And always remember hoping each episode of Voyage To The Bottom of The Sea would have the flying sub in it. You can't get much cooler than both subs. The fact that the scaled model you have works so well is a credit to the designers. Of course, not forgetting Stingray. Yet another really cool sub.

Fantastic! I can only hope you're presently working on the full-size, operational model, that can also fly at jet speeds, and of course, comfortable seats for a pilot and co-pilot. 🙂 The Flying Sub, aka FS1, was such a cool design. It still looks cool today. The design reminds me of those amazing sci-fi covers on the Tom Swift books.

Awesome! Now all you need to do is build a 1/32 scale Seaview and an electrical magnetic docking system and sally fort! Oh and make the Flying Sub Fly! Just kidding on the last part but on the first part, oh wow would that be great! This was truly great! Thank you!

    • @pauld6967

I second you on the thought that it would be great if he had a 1/32nd scale Seaview and could do the docking/undocking sequence.
I suspect that he would need to upgrade to an Olympic-sized pool.

Really a great sight to see the flying sub actually perform in the water.
It's really interesting that the design does work, but the filming miniatures had to be able to function in the water even if they were controlled/propelled by a Lydecker wire control rig. Thanks for a nice build and tribute to a fondly remembered series😀👍👍

That's awesome!! I loved "Voyage..." & had a couple of flying sub models when I was a kid. They eventually broke because I played with them all the time instead of leaving them on their displays. LOL I also loved the Seaview as well as another vehicle from an Irwin Allen show, the Jupiter 2 from Lost in Space. Totally dig the POV from the inside! Dude you really did a fantastic job. Bravo.

You did what I wanted to do 50 years ago. I had a toy model of the flying sub and one day tossed it in my pool . I was amazed at how it easily glided through the pool . I thought man if I could have the proper electronics installed in this, this would make one cool toy. Congrats on letting me see this wild idea come to life.

That flying sub is remarkable.very cool.guess what?I love that show.i used to watch it everyday.i had the DVD's.i just recently constructed a two foot wide identical, painted yellow of course, cardboard model that actually flys like a glider when you toss it in the air.then I added a very small motorized propeller with a tiny radio control system and I attached with Velcro strips two long skinny empty water bottles as pontoons to support it on the water and it can switch to water use,a surface vehicle.it works both ways.i got inspired by your model.

Long in the tooth aye? Well, I guess that's fairly accurate. That's a very nice flying sub. As a kid I thought how wonderful would that be to have such a machine. And it really doesn't seem so far fetched, so see if you can get that model to fly too. I assume the magnetic lock is not water tight and water flow between the two shells. Is that correct? I could imagine a very light weight craft that pulls water in using syringes to dive like a sub. It would vent all water (those syringes are pretty light), rise to the surface, and take off like a sea plane. It would be so epic. I can see Richard Basehart at the controls.
