      @@fw1421 no, right out of the factory. this is the very last production line AH-1Z to leave the factory.
      It left here, Nov 4 2022 and flew to Camp Pendleton as the final unit to be assembled and completed for the Marines.

      @@CapStar362 I was thinking the same thing. No squadron markings, no dripping oil , and fresh paint job. I worked on the UH-1N (Huey) and AH-1J / AH-1W (Super Cobra) from 1984 - 2004 at Camp Pendleton (HMLA 169, MAG 39) as a 6114 (mechanic) and 6174 (Huey Crewchief). It seems like yesterday I took my last flight in the Huey but it was over 18 years ago.

    What a total bad ass helicopter with the twin engines and four blades with supersonic tips! They should convert some of the older ones to this configuration. Those airframes are strong and a bunch of them were made and probably cheaper to do it this way than those expensive "plastic" helicopters.👍💪🇺🇲

    That was the south airfield pad at the Hurst Plant. I spent 15 years as an engineer on the AH-1W to AH-1Z That might be a new FMS aircraft on checkflight and heading back to Amarillo where it was made. It will fly Marine colors till delivery and then reidentified. I miss my Cobras and Hueys.

    • @jrftworth
      @jrftworth ปีที่แล้ว

      What do you mean it will fly Marine colors till delivery and then "reidentified" Military contractors like Bell, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, etc deliver aircraft from the factory in the fashion it's customer will use them. They don't paint them one way during flight tests, then change them upon delivery.
      Explain what it is you're talking about

      @@jrftworth FMS Marine sales thru NAVAIR will be built to the Marine configuration. After Bell sells and DD250s to Marines, the Government FMS office will repaint, remove equipment and install new FMS equipment and customize as per their contract. Bell does no sell to FMS, NAVAIR does. Its part of the current FMS contract.

      The Zulu Viper started to roll off the line in Dec 2000. They're still manufactured and current generation. The SuperCobra (AH-1W) was introduce in 2986. The SeaCobra (AH-1J) may have seen some *very* limited time in Vietnam (1971 introduction). The Vietnam-era Cobras were single engine designs. Everything since 1971 are twin engine. There are likely to be plenty of AH-1 Cobras around since they only stopped production in 2019. The latest AH-1 variant is the 1G, which was $11 million new. They can be had for a tick over $2 million now.

    badass, it does seem like with manpads that are so effective these days that attack helicopters have had to change tactics and are quite vulnerable. They may be superseeded by unmanned helicopter drones at some point because the risk is too great unless we can catch up on countermeasures that are more effective.

      The sound changed once they went to the 4 blade main rotor system. I had over 3,600 hours as a Crew Chief on the UH-1N (Huey) while I was on active duty from 1984 - 2004 in the Marine Corps. One early morning (0600 hours) and we were taking off from MCAS Yuma. We flew over a mobile home park and the pilot pushed the cyclic forward for max speed and pulled up on the collective and the 2 main rotor blades where making the lovely whop, whop noise as the main rotor blades sliced through the air. Mid way over the mobile home park we made a hard right 90 degree turn and the sound of the main rotor blades increased in sound, it was great. The pilot said, " Thats the sound of freedom boys". This was back in 1989 or 1990 and I will never forget it.

      If it makes you feel better, the Corps saved a TON of money by rebuilding their fleet of UH-1’s and AH-1’s. They kept the airframes but upgraded almost everything else. It was one of the few smart money decisions the Government made.

      They're not starting a Tesla and going for a leisurely ride to the grocery store. There is a checklist and series of steps that have to be done before takeoff.
      Your knowledge of aviation is obviously minimal at best

      Secondly since you obviously don't me whatsoever, I'll have you know that I served over 15 years in the Air Force, I worked out on the flightline around all kinds of military aircraft including AH-1 Cobra's. Secondly I am a huge aviation fan and know more about military aircraft than you'll ever know. Now STFU and keep your stupid comments to yourself
