Hello, mate It would be great if you research and try intermittent fasting, for me is the best and easiest way of staying lean and dropping pounds. I was overweight for the first time in my life back in 2015. I had always been lean and athletic looking. I have been on intermittent fasting since October 2015 and I will not go back to my old ways. I dropped 10 kg in less than two months and have been able to maintain a steady, healthy weight. I just skip breakfast. I have lunch at 12 or 1 pm and dinner at 6 or 7 pm, therefore, my eating window is 5 to 7 hours with the rest of the day fully fasted. Fully fasted means that, in the morning, I only drink water and an occasional black, plain coffee, no sugar, no cream, nothing. Of course, this is not an iron chain, it allows for flexibility. For instance, sometimes I have the regular breakfast in the morning due to family reasons or because I am traveling. Also, I can have late dinners on weekends with my close ones. The key is consistency. You can allow to have one or two "cheating" days per week. Five days of intermittent fasting per week are better than the regular 3 meal a day routine. I hope you give it a try, it is life changing stuff because it provides health benefits beyond losing weight. Cheers from Colombia!
you can't control where you lose fat. your body naturally pulls fat from different parts of the body at its own rate. where your body stores extra fat is largely genetic, barring any externalities like people who use insulin shots tend to have fat accumulations where they inject.
My (not especially well informed) impression is that intermittent fasting is probably the best way to get low body fat/abs. Never tried it but the logic of it would simply be that it encourages your body to burn fat (not just calories like cardio but fat because you burn through the carbs/glycogen first, then the fat simply by having a long break between meals from time to time.
this is what i've always told my friends, it's all about body fat%. at this point it seems like it should be common knowledge unless you're absolutely brand new to fitness in general. i have pretty well defined abs at around 12-15% body fat and i haven't explicitly worked out my abs in years. as mentioned, i keep good form with my exercises and I skateboard a ton, but i don't remember the last time i did crunches, leg raises, etc. not to say core exercises are not important from a health and athletic standpoint, but form a purely aesthetic "having abs" POV i find them pointless.
@@brikiel nah at that time i was just skin and bones. the only thing i could do was 2-3hours running every day, pull ups and bicep curls + I often only ate some carrots and gummybears = almost 0 protein at max 1000kcal; i was young and noone told me this wouldn't work xd
hello mr k boges. really admire your form on the chinups and notice you do almost full dead hang with the supinated grip. How can i work up to this type of shoulder flexibility? I find I am struggling a lot to have them rotate (internally rotate?) and feel like my arms are twisting at the wrist/elbow. Any other things I can do to improve that shoulder mobility? Thanks!
He might say something different, but in my experience just doing supinated dead hangs relatively frequently. I used to have the same issue, as well as squatting deep. Spending time in the positions you want to be comfortable with is the best way imo
It does. Body types are different. Some peoples abs do not need focused work and others do. Simply put some postures are going to force abs to always be activated especially when exercising. While others struggle even when doing ab exercises. Sorry bud but as I specialise in posture, prehab and rehab I have seen this first hand. So many people haven't got good or even decent posture meaning they have overdeveloped areas and underdeveloped areas. They would need to do ab specific exercises for a long time to regain balance particularly if they still sit a lot. Personally I barely do any chest, maybe 20 to 40 pushups a week if that, no muscle ups or any other chest stuff.. literally spend hours a week stretching the pecs and have always had complements abouy my chest.... and I am lean af 😂 as I simply dont eat much. My legs are pretty massively out of proportion and I dont do leg stuff often at all. I do however do glute specific exercises (once or twice a week for 20 to 30 minutes) to rebalance that area but not squats or lunges except occasional plyo stuff for HIIT (10 minutes. I only do bodyweight for reference. Just an example. Lots of people must do abs and core not just for show but for health.
Kyle, you're saying that in order to get lean you must be in a calorie deficit. Will that affect my muscle mass? How can I keep the muscles, while in a calorie deficit? Can I achieve the leanness by cutting out certain foods or eating habits, but still keep the calorie intake sufficient for keeping the muscle mass? Thank you.
@@timhold2016 it's a stupid advice bro u just require more protein absorption nit more protein in general... U just need around 120-150 gm of protein moreover high protein diets are proved harmful in long run...
I believe you need some kind of training. At one point in my life I weighted 58 kg @ 182 cm and had almost no visible abs, just bones :'). That being said, I didn't train, just some pull-up every now and then.
Kyle, when you do prolonged fasts, even 20-22 hours, Do you have energy to have good workouts? Any tips to training when fasting? Thank you for your help
My doctor suggested me to avoid crunches and I even avoid most of the exercise which involves pressure on my diaphragm as I have Hiatus hernia. I am now doing daily exercise. Are there any other cautions which should I consider?
You should work your abs just as frequently , if not even more, as training your chest , back, shoulders, etc even if you are 20 + percent bodyfat. Yes you will 'see' them with low bf but nothing impressive since you never worked them with frequency and intensity as your legs, chest, back, etc. you will just see some definition but not these sexy strong functional abs with slaps of meat on top of them. You'll have to drop to much lower bf percentage to see them puny tiny abs. Abs muscles are the core of your being. you work them more than all other muscles. Decline weighted sit-ups with high volume will get you there.
Is it okay to do, e.g. normal pushups, dips and diamond push ups instead of 3 sets of the same exercise each day like you did here? (probably is, just wanna make sure!)
Hey Javie! I have done a mix of weights and BW my whole life, but the vast majority of my training has been with BW, especially for the upper body. Pull ups and push up variations, weighted and unweighted, have been staple exercises since I was a kid. I don't look at BW as being substantially different than weights, though. Your body cannot distinguish the difference between mechanical tension generated by moving your BW vs moving an external weight. There is fundamentally no difference. Weights have an advantage of being able scale and change the scope of loading... you can do an isolation movement to apply tension to a very particular muscle OR you can do something that is globally stimulating. It can be highly targeted, scaled, or very general. Whereas with calisthenics, we are more limited in this regard. That doesn't mean that is less effective, it just means that it's a different tool, but most people can build amazing physiques with either, provided they train properly and support that with good nutrition and recovery.
@@Kboges thanks for taking the time !!im really enjoying the channel, looking forward to improve my body and your content is clear no BS,or a lot of product commercial 🔥
I'm naturally thin and have to work hard to gain muscle. I know how to gain muscle. I have very little body fat but a stubborn small amount of fat lower abdomen (so the dreaded skinny/fat). I realize I need to go into a calorie deficit to get rid of that last bit, but assume I will risk losing some of the hard-earned muscle. I've heard and read about being in calorie deficit but maintaining adequate protein intake. I've also seen bodybuilders cut to super lean but also lose a lot of muscle. Are you able to find that perfect balance point? It seems like it would take an incredible amount of fine tuning. Like just being 50 or 100 calories one way or the other off the razors edge could have you either catabolic or anabolic. Did you have to experiment a lot with your diet to get your current physique?
Hey Kyle, What workouts can I use to strengthen my core? I'm lean enough to see my abs but my core is weak. Will planks, side planks and reverse planks suffice for core strength, stability and muscle building? Thanks!
So do you do any ab focused exercises? I'm about 10% body fat with a "fit" amount of muscle. I'd still wish my abs were more pronounced though. How significantly can ab exercises grow the abdominals?
Cables crunches, single arm cable crunches (obliques), and ball v-ups are your friend. I too have "flat" abs for lack of a better term. You (and I) are people that don't have big bulging abdominal muscles. We need to work them specifically in order to see bigger, more defined abs. I've been working on it to try to bring them up.
I don't regularly do them. I will go whole stretches without doing any assistance exercises, and when I do them, they are typically intermittent quick.
This guy is among the best on here, but: Video title: "How to get abs". Video content: 1 min & a half of talking about just eat in a calorie deficit (he's not wrong) then peaces out. 5 & a half mins of him doing squats/pullups instead. Video subject: clearly does some type of ab movement (or maybe I'm wrong & he does so many pushups that he's always planking??) Your channel is great but I can't seem to find a video on it that actually talks about abs beyond this. Are there movements you do? Anyway, best channel on here but this one just makes me want to ask more questions. I mean this respectfully. I'm just curious looking at a sea of different opinions on core training: "planks aren't enough" vs "only plank or you're killing your spine", "I swear by the cable crunch" vs "cable crunch will destroy your vertebrae", "hanging leg raises are the best" vs you get it, etc.. I'm talking on top of the calorie deficit. Basically, what movements do you do that activates your abdominal muscles enough (on top of obviously being lean) where they "pop" how they do in your videos (1:52 is a good example) Thank you!
Point taken on the criticism. I hope the content quality has improved since making this. I was still figuring things out so thanks for the patience with the lack of polish and direction on these initial videos. Ok for abs… literally push ups and pull ups are my primary core exercises. I will occasionally do hanging leg raises but only for a handful of workouts a few times per year. My push up sets often last 2+ minutes and my pull up sets will last a minute or so. I feel like both of them very strongly in the abs. I wouldn’t say my abs are not huge, they aren’t super deep or anything but being a bit leaner makes them visible. I feel like my core is plenty strong enough for any of the physical things I do; I’ve always had naturally good punching power and my grappling is strong so I don’t do dedicated work for it for martial arts. I can do pretty challenging core exercises but I don’t typically train them. I’m not against core training at all, and I think something like the hanging leg raise is an excellent ab strengthener, for example, but I don’t feel like I need to spend much time on them. I hope that helps. Sorry for the dud video and I truly appreciate the criticism. Just trying to get better at this so it really is helpful. 🙏
@@Kboges Thank you for sharing this! That is helpful & answers my questions on it. I love all your videos so I apologize for implying it was a dud, just was trying to get some more insight/clarity/exploration on this topic. Regards!

I experimented with a vegan diet some years back. I lost over 30lbs and I was seriously underweight. I still could barely see any abs. You need to train them. A lot of people live very sedentary lifestyles, like I used to.
Ahh yeah this can definitely happen on that type of diet. Unless you are training and have good protein intake, weight loss can result in significant muscle loss.
How do you find out what your daily calorie intake should be ? ( Is there a height / weight / age equation ?) Then what would be a healthy calorie deficit ? For a slow fat loss . Thanks for yourvids , I'm a rookie , haha cheers , Anthony
Hey man.. do you always train your chin ups in this particular tempo? If we were to focus on muscle development, would you suggest going slower on the reps or going fast thus getting that pumped feeling resulting in better muscle growth?
I mix tempo up a bit, and sometimes I will do a block of different tempos. Sometimes slow and paused, sometimes, explosive, sometimes constant tension. I look at the all as different variations.
Abs? What are those? I hover btwn 14-20%. When I’m being absolutely lazy, holiday’s, vacation. I get down to 11-12% with a not too strict diet and just sticking to weekly workout schedule and will just see a slight abs outline. I’d have to be under 8% and that is not something I care to reach or maintain. The juice is not worth the squeeze.
Wow! Yes I don't blame you. That's what is interesting- visible abs show up at different BF% depending on where you genetically hold fat. I've had some client with abs at almost 15% (as tested by dexa)!
How do you recruit abs in pullups when the bars are low enough to grab them easily while standing? When my arms are fully extended I have a full foot or more of extra height I have to tuck my legs in to compensate for. I’m 6’3” and my Crunch Gym pullup bars are just too low 🤦♂️
can you make a video on how to hold your abs during a workout (brain-body connection) - I have low body fat % and a 4-6 pack but have come to realize I have diastasis recti where my lower belly bulges out.
th-cam.com/video/TdzrYvgvv3o/w-d-xo.html This helped me. I also try to do a milder vacuum during my other exercises to build that min-muscle connection. Hope this helps
Hello, thanks for video. I want to ask you a question. Do these exercise make abs like you have? Don't you use different abs exercise to have abs like you have?
Well I’m already thin, 6’1 roughly 155-160lbs and imma start working out more when the new comes. How much leaner do I need to be? I already have a fast metabolism so loosing weight probably won’t be a issue.

I haven't been able to do a situp for years now. Been trying and I am not sure if it's because of chronic lower back pain as I have pulled it badly 4 times and it's not getting better ?
Probably around 10%. My dexa scans usually show about 10-10.5%. I've flirted with sub 10% for a bit but it is extremely hard to maintain for me- I like to eat. I can sustain 10-11% pretty comfortably though. Everyone is different in this regard.
@@Jonathan-wo6kf That's really a great question... I think most guys will do well between 10-15% provided they have a good amount of muscle mass. Things get skewed in the data if we look at lean individuals; they often show increased morality rates but there are some confounding variables there, and in the general population, being lean is often associated with low muscle mass and frailty risks. Those risks disappear when we factor in fat free mass. So... I think an athletic body composition is probably going to give the best tradeoff. It just needs to be balanced with stress and other lifestyle factors.
I feel clammy and jittery if I don't eat 3-4 meals a day. My Brian feels tired and restless if I don't feed my self throughout the day. Kindly suggest! P.S: I am not a diabatic.
Seems to me that your body is used to getting lots of carbs. Focus on reducing your carbs intake (except fiber) and you will eventually feel much better. Personally I did intermittent fasting for 3 months and it was a bit tough at the beginning but relaxing afterward.
no but you have to bring your reps to failure to gain muscles, plenty sets and plenty reps until failure, for example do 3 or 4 sets of as many push ups you can do in that set:1st set 30 push ups ,2nd set 25 push ups,3rd set 20 push ups,4th 20 push ups,ur numbers would be different, just an example, bring reps till failure
I find you knowledgeable and concise in all videos, but respectfully disagree.Unless you already train in intermediate-advance levels you most likely do not have abs that are developed enough to be well visible even if body fat percentage was extremely low. And compound exercises that hit abs secondarily are insufficient to produce development for six pack. Great videos. I enjoy your work very much.
Hey Bodhi! Thank you for the kind words and I appreciate your perspective. Great points here. I do think this can be highly individual and I don't think it's binary. I know for myself, I NEVER trained abs for quite a long time. I still had a visible 6 pack when I leaned out. Doing some direct ab work made it look BETTER, but it wasn't like 0 abs without training and 100% of the abs with. I think most people can get a pretty good looking core just with compounds (especially pull ups and chins that require significant ab recruitment) and getting pretty lean, but I agree that they can get a better looking mid section through direct training. The degree of dedicated work needed is highly individual- genetics goals, leanness, etc. Again, great points and thanks for the respectful discussion! Always nice when people disagree about a point without throwing in some personal attacks for fun 😂
I had visible abs at 13 before I started training because I was a skinny bastard. You most definitely do not need to get to intermediate or advanced levels to see abs most people will have them after a few months of standard training if you have low enough body fat
@@timcahill4676 Because you have good genetics. I've seen a guy who was going to a pub every day after work. He had abs like an athlete but he never trained and his diet was terrible.
Eate Poop for Abes
The sheer insult I felt hearing you say I need to be leaner than I currently am, as I'm spooning a piece of cake into my face.
Hey man this is a great channel - one suggestion is you have an echo in the room with your mic. Better mic ?
Everyone asks, "How do I get abs?"
The answer is, "You already have them." The better question is, "How do I reveal my abs?"
Spot on. This is well said. Mind if I borrow this?
not true, was 58kg 175cm and no abs :D (a few kilos less and would be critical underweight); you definitly need protein and resistance training
@@merlinsteindorf-elsner1150 Maybe your abs genetics sucks

Disagree. They can also be worked. Like any muscle.
hello mr k boges. really admire your form on the chinups and notice you do almost full dead hang with the supinated grip.
Dude got a 6 pack on his back
Thank you.
Keep your protein intake at 1.75-2 grams per pound of body weight

perfect conditioning, smart, pleasant...how tall are you?
Kyle, when you do prolonged fasts, even 20-22 hours, Do you have energy to have good workouts? Any tips to training when fasting? Thank you for your help
Hey Kyle, Do you ever do prolonged fasts(24 hours or more)? What is your opinion on them? Great content as always
I have done 36 before, but I often do 20-22 hours a day due to schedule conflicts.
Can you please add a good core workout session??
I can see my abs but the problem is that they are bloated. It looks like i havent trained a single day in my life just because they stick out
My doctor suggested me to avoid crunches and I even avoid most of the exercise which involves pressure on my diaphragm as I have Hiatus hernia.
I have an 8 pack. But I train my abs most days till failure. I never let them rest.
Waste of time
@@kek8230 what do you mean?
Great argument
I love direct isolation core workouts, spine flexion/leg raises gives coregasm.
Keep at it! It definitely will help.
Is it okay to do, e.g. normal pushups, dips and diamond push ups instead of 3 sets of the same exercise each day like you did here? (probably is, just wanna make sure!)
Real question is how do I get back-abs??
Mine come through when I'm lean, like around 10% BF. If I carry a bit more body fat they aren't visible.
So sr did you actually achieved that body only with body weight im skeptical about it
How would you approach nutrition if training early am.? Fasted training?

How to make the stomach tighter? I'm skinny fat, I can see my abs, but they are soft. How do I get my stomach to be tight?
Hey Kyle,
What workouts can I use to strengthen my core? I'm lean enough to see my abs but my core is weak. Will planks, side planks and reverse planks suffice for core strength, stability and muscle building?
Thanks!
Somehow my upper abs starts to show after a month of doing pull ups without doing any ab exercise.
They are my favorite ab exercise 💪
@@Kboges that's good to know. It inspires me even more to polish my pull ups

If you don't mind me asking why did you seldom post the assistance exercises you were doing in these 30 days?
I don't regularly do them. I will go whole stretches without doing any assistance exercises, and when I do them, they are typically intermittent quick.
This guy is among the best on here, but:
Video title: "How to get abs".
Video content: 1 min & a half of talking about just eat in a calorie deficit (he's not wrong) then peaces out. 5 & a half mins of him doing squats/pullups instead.
Video subject: clearly does some type of ab movement (or maybe I'm wrong & he does so many pushups that he's always planking??)
Your channel is great but I can't seem to find a video on it that actually talks about abs beyond this.
Basically, what movements do you do that activates your abdominal muscles enough (on top of obviously being lean) where they "pop" how they do in your videos (1:52 is a good example)
Thank you!
Regards!
No apology needed! Some of the older videos… I can’t watch 😂 but I’m happy to hear you enjoy the content! If you have any more questions, never hesitate to reach out.
Easiest way.... track your calories and your weight. If your weight is stable, your current average intake is maintenance.
Hey man.. do you always train your chin ups in this particular tempo?
I've had some client with abs at almost 15% (as tested by dexa)!
when i do leg raises or other ab workouts, i can hear a popping noise in my abs. Is this normal or should i be concerned?
What is your height and weight? You look extremely lean.

Most accurate way is DEXA scan.
what are some substitutions for rows if you dont have a row machine?
Well I’m already thin, 6’1 roughly 155-160lbs and imma start working out more when the new comes. How much leaner do I need to be? I already have a fast metabolism so loosing weight probably won’t be a issue.
At your height and weight the best thing to change your body comp is going to be adding muscle.

Hey Kyle, what do you estimate your body fat percentage is in this clip?
Probably around 10%. My dexa scans usually show about 10-10.5%. I've flirted with sub 10% for a bit but it is extremely hard to maintain for me- I like to eat. I can sustain 10-11% pretty comfortably though. Everyone is different in this regard.
@@Kboges Thank you for the reply. In your opinion, what is an optimal body fat range for the sake of health and longevity?
Kindly suggest!

hi Kyle, do we need to exercise daily to gain muscles?
no but you have to bring your reps to failure to gain muscles, plenty sets and plenty reps until failure, for example do 3 or 4 sets of as many push ups you can do in that set:1st set 30 push ups ,2nd set 25 push ups,3rd set 20 push ups,4th 20 push ups,ur numbers would be different, just an example, bring reps till failure
He worked physical jobs but even before that he had abs. I'm not talking about a little cut but huge, well-developed abs. Personally, I was skinny most of my life and sometimes you could even see ribs but no abs. If you don't have genetics then training will help to some extent but it might be also that it won't be possible for me ever because of poor genetics.
If you look at kids playing football on the field some of them are quite thin and have visible abs. Most people have abs that are visible without training.
