      Hi, yes it was a bit of a surprise, good job we both set the material true in the chuck or else i’d have been in a right pickle. cheers

    "more slop than a pea in a whistle"!!! I have never heard that before! I hope I heard that right! English, you GOTTA love the idioms! thank you sir!
    I was remembering another machinist trying to make a rather small diameter, but long lead screw and having it bow, chatter and generally bugger up the acme threads... I was thinking, hmm, he might have some problems here, but I've never seen a Following rest before! Wow!

    That probably explains why the threaded section had such low hardness. Neat to find anyways.

    Hi, I've just done exactly the same with my Harrison L5A, after a couple of false starts I finally did it. I repaired the original nut by boring out the old threads, silver soldered in a piece of bronze, I made a tap using the same hss tool I ground for the leads screw and tapped it. All the best, Tom

    • @Thesheddweller
      @Thesheddweller  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, I thought about using the old thread as a tap, to rough out the nut before finishing with a good tap. Mind you I like the idea of silver soldering a sleeve in…cheers.

    Looks like a custom travelling steady mounted on the crosslide is a future project. I had a similar experience with the shaper, someone had replaced the feed screw only they had changed the pitch, took me a while to work out why the graduated dial didn’t tally with the feed rate.

    • @Thesheddweller
      @Thesheddweller  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tony, yeah modifying the steady would be a future project, but its going to have to wait in the queue. There are loads of projects on the way, but now I’ve got lots of people asking for bits to be made. regards

      I’ve been in the process of producing the compound screw. I was considering making this one also.

  • @HanstheTraffer
    @HanstheTraffer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow, thanks for the in depth explanation. I am a novice...I thought you may be able to cut and grind the old lead screw into a tap to make the new nut. Because it is a bit undersized it may just work out very well.

    • @Thesheddweller
      @Thesheddweller  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Hans. The lead screw used as a tap( after preparation )wouldn’t work because the old lead screw is smaller than the new one by a very small amount, where as a new tap should be up to 0.125mm ( 0.005”) bigger for that size acme screw. regards

    Hi Paul, I've been muddling along with a dead centre and a shop-made s/h live centre for a while now. Would you recommend getting a proper live centre or persevere?

    • @Thesheddweller
      @Thesheddweller  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi William. Muddling along is, for me, a phrase that very much sums up the engineering industry.
      I find, if what I've got does the job,.. that's enough. But, if I need to buy something to help me get the job done I’ll only buy it under certain conditions… that is, if I can’t make what I need, I can't borrow what I need, is it for a one off job and I can afford what I need, will it make my life much easier . This is very much in line with most engineering industry practices. regards
      Ps, if you have a dead centre with a tungsten carbide tip that'll do for almost everything.

    Are you tempted to make a double nut rather than a long nut? Hardinge use this system to eliminate any backlash. It's a bit like a gib but in nut form if you know what I mean. Don't know what they are called, rather like the method of locking two nuts together but only just touching. Does my poor description make sense?

    • @Thesheddweller
      @Thesheddweller  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mmmm, I'm not sure I want to go to that level of of backlash removal because I’m used to having it around, it’s like an old friend. Without backlash I’ll still go through the motions. Sad init.

    • @chrislee7817
      @chrislee7817 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Thesheddweller it's very nice to be able to adjust how much backlash you like though. Worth looking at and quite simple to make, I love clever. ❤
