    Great review, I needed to brush up on its use as I havent used it in years but Im going on a back country hunting trip with my boys and a friend and this will be our go to filter. This thing is a work of art and will indeed last a lifetime.
    We have plastic filters but I trust this one the most.

      Thank you so much! Yeah, this filter is unbeatable. I filtered very murky water on a backpacking trip with it, and it's the only filter I would trust with water like that. Because of the weight, I no longer take it with me, unfortunately, but it will serve you well, especially since you have a few people. It filters water so fast! Have a great trip. I'm glad my video helped you to remember how everything works. :)

    So glad you got one of these. I've been using mine for must be 15 years now and its still going strong. If you used this filter for 4 litres of water a day you'd get over 34 years of use out of it. The only thing to beware of is not to let it freeze ever. If I suspect below zero temps I wont even leave the filter in my kit in the back of the truck. Money well spent.Loved the video.

      Thank you so much for watching and for your comment. Yeah, this filter is amazing, but I do wish it wasn't quite this heavy. I rarely use it for that reason because I'm often out with my backpack. I wasn't sure about the freezing part and didn't include it in my video. It makes sense that it won't work and that it could possibly damage the filter, even. A friend actually specifically asked me about that after watching the video, so I can tell her your answer now :D
      Did you know that little trick with the contact lens container? That might work for you as well, and it adds pretty much no weight at all. It's so easy to keep track of these little caps that way. Anyway, good to hear from you again. :)

    • @boutthere3374
      @boutthere3374 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@adventuresandreams Your great lens cap idea came to late for me. I lost those caps first time out many years ago. I only remembered losing them when I seen them on yours. I leave mine home most of the time now because of the weight and instead I use the BeFree filters/bag you also demo in a previous vid but anytime weight isn't an issue its my go to. BTW the best price I ever seen on a replacement filter has always been during sales at Campsaver online in the unlikely event you'd ever need one.

    • @adventuresandreams
      @adventuresandreams  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@boutthere3374 Ah, that's too bad about your caps. I bet Katadyn would send replacements if you want them. They have excellent customer service. But yeah, the BeFree filter is my go-to filter as well, but it's good to hear about the sales at Campsaver if I ever need one.

      Completely useless when you can't use it during ❄️ winter or very cold conditions...which is 6-12 months, depending on where you are.
      High altitude also affects it's use.
      The weight of it is the same as a winter down jacket...so essentially kills the point of carrying lightweight down clothing, or keeping pack ligh during heat of summer treks.
      The obsessive avoidance of placing it on the ground is unessasary...because you could drop a sandwich in the dirt and eat it without problems.
      I prefer to simply drink unfiltered water 💦 direct from the streams, rivers and lakes.

    • @boutthere3374
      @boutthere3374 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Globetrotter-1 You might be missing the point of this filter. It and almost all other filters are useless in winter but thankfully all that white stuff all over the place can be melted for water just keep in mind butane canisters are also useless in winter so best to have a good liquid fuel stove or wood. I wont name the ongoing disasters right now but if I had to rush out of my house and time was of the essence would I prefer to take 50 or so Katadyn Befree filters or one Pocket?

      It was hyped a good bit a few years ago, but I think it's just a bit too heavy for backpacking, unfortunately, unless you share the weight with others. I can bring it sometime, though, if you want to see :) Thanks for watching!

    I just got mine. A first. I have a feeling though that this filter is mostly for children of the 80s. Back then it was a sensation. Today there are many and better options and many a hiker drift to those.

      Thanks for watching my video! I'm glad you got the filter, and would love to hear from you how you like it after using it a bit. I think this filter is super useful in some situations, but definitely not all. I took it backpacking one time, and the weight was just too much for that. I'll take my BeFree filter any day with my backpack, though. But when the water is super dirty, I would trust this filter more than any other, and it lasts forever. I think it could be useful for off-grid living and very long tours, also canoe camping where weight doesn't play as much of a role. What did you buy it for? I'm currious! Take good care of it and let it dry for a very long time! :)

    Thanks for making this video. I just got a katadyn pocket filter also but the water that is coming out from running already filtered tap water theough it has a very strong unpleasant chemical-like smell and is extremely bubbly (it has no smell before going through the katadyn filter). I've cleaned it thoroughly and applied lubricant to the threads but no change. It seems like the smell dissipates somewhat if I let the filtered water sit out afterwards but I don't feel comfortable drinking the water that comes out of this because of how strong the smell it adds to the water is. Have you encountered this issue?

    • @adventuresandreams
      @adventuresandreams  14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi there, thank you so much for watching my video. The issue you describe is new to me, the smell at least. I have encountered bubbles in the past from pressing the water through the filter. I don't want to give you any wrong answers, so I will contact Katadyn for you and find out about it. It's a good thing for me to learn as well. They are pretty fast in responding. Perhaps you can hold off on using the filter for a couple of days while I get the answer for you? I hope your filter is ok, but if it's a new one and the ceramic element is faulty, they will replace it for sure. If you find out about it before I get back to you, please let me know here as well. I am currious about this issue for sure.

      Hello again, I already heard back from Katadyn, and this is what they wrote:
      "Thank you for your email.
      We have not received complaints of a chemical odor from the Pocket. The Pocket is only to be cleaned with water and no cleaning solutions or soap.
      If cleaners are used, they could be absorbed into the filter and that could be the cause of the chemical odor. That is just a guess.
      The customer might want to try soaking it in 1 tbs of household vinegar to 1 liter of water. Perhaps that might remove the taste. "
      Please let me know if the vinegar helps. Good luck, Andrea

      @@adventuresandreams Hi, thanks for your reply. I was planning to contact them also if I couldn't find anything else out online otherwise but.. just to clarify, the smell I was getting is on the first use, after cleaning with only water and nothing else. I will try soaking it in vinegar and see what that does.

      @@improvetheworldnow Interesting. I hope that the vinegar works, followed by lots of clean-water rinsing. I've had mine for many years so I honestly can't even remember my first use. I hope it works out. It's such a great filter if you keep up the cleaning and let it dry very well. I hope to hear from you one more time after you've treated it.

    Hi, Andrea. I like your Katadyn reviews. I have the older (white) Katadyn Pocket filter. My wife and I used it frequently. Do you know if Katadyn's newer pump head design fits on the older Pocket Filter, we bought ours in the mid nineteen eighties. On ours, you can't attach a tygon outflow tube to the outflow spout which means you have to be careful about aiming all the time. Thanks again.

    • @adventuresandreams
      @adventuresandreams  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi there, thanks for watching my video. To be honest, I'm not sure if the pump head would fit. I've only ever had this filter, along with the carbon filter and BeFree. Perhaps you are near an REI or other outdoor store to ask there? Or you can always contact the company directly. www.katadyngroup.com/us/en/about-us/Contact Good luck, and please let me know what you find out. It might be helpful for other viewers as well. :)

    Ok, I grew mildew on mine after a year. What should I do to clean it ?

    • @adventuresandreams
      @adventuresandreams  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi there, thanks for watching my video. Ufff, mildew. That actually happened to me as well, but I didn't include it in the video. I contacted Katadyn customer support, and here is what they said:
      You can use a little bit of bleach, diluted for 1L or 1 quart to 2 teaspoons of bleach.
      You can pump that through the whole thing or just use that as part of your scrubbing.
      And then make sure to allow the ceramic element to thoroughly dry out.

    • @adventuresandreams
      @adventuresandreams  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I tried just pumping it through and scrubbing it, but I still had some spots, so I let it sit overnight in the diluted bleach solution. All the spots were gone the next day. I pumped fresh water through MANY times before I felt safe to use it again, but Katadyn reassured me that a diluted bleach solution doesn't hurt anything.
      Just a quick thing, I used to not disassemble it completely, and that's how I got some mildew as well. You really need to take it completely apart, like I show in the video, and let it sit for many days.
      I hope that helps. Please let me know if you had any success. :)

    Is there a hand held or portable water purification system that can remove chemicals, heavy metals, and viruses?

      Hi Jorge, thanks for watching my video and for your comments. Katadyn actually has a filter that does it all, removing bacteria, viruses, and chemicals with a combo filter. It's the Katadyn Vario. If you would like, you can buy it with my affiliate link here: amzn.to/4a00xdC
      I have not tried it, but knowing Katadyn, it is going to be top quality, and to be honest, If I had the choice now, I would buy it before getting the rather heavy Pocket filter. Let me know if you buy it. I would love to find out how well it works :) Thanks again, and have some amazing adventures out there!
