Haha I know it doesn’t really make sense to me. He knew the exact location and stopped right before the pond and knew it was there then acted surprised when there was a pond there. I didn’t really understand that.

You'd be in deep you know what if it was one of the car based SUVs you've tested. Despite the haphazard situation, it turned out to be an excellent show for the 4Runner.

That's every professional 4-wheelers' rule, why? Because this is why lol. safety people, it's not hard to follow. Now what would this guy had done had that "pond" been deep enough for the car to sink? (notice how before hitting the hole he said "now I'm going to go across what used to be a pond which I'm sure still is" then once he hits it and fights to get back out he says "I have never come across this before" WTF do you mean you've never come across it before? lol) My point is even when you know everything about where you are (or so think you do) never go without a friend in another vehicle!

That's too bad. I found your review more helpful than most, I've always liked 4Runners but there was always something else that I wanted more(like my current Tacoma)... But now, I'm looking into an SUV for various reasons and was leaning towards the Jeep GC but since I've loved my Tacoma I wanted to see what people were saying about the 4Runner and your review has definitely sold it for me, most convincing was the fact that as a car reviewer you chose the 4Runner as your last personal vehicle, that says a lot to me. If buying an SUV now, would you opt for the 4Runner or has anything else caught your eye?(keep in mind that I don't want to pay 100k for a RR Sport SC lol)

Go back there in the spring or summer and search for that camera. If the waterproof case didn't get broken, the camera should be fine...

Holy shit... This video should be a great Toyota comercial (If that front end didn't look like ass) Toyota should be ashamed of not loaning you more cars because of this accident.
Owning a 99 4runner limited for its entire life I loved that truck. 260k with never any major problems. Since I tow atvs it got really horrible gas mileage, didnt have towing power at all and decided to upgrade. Almost two years ago I purchased a 2012 4runner Limited and love it even more than my 99. The ride is superior by a long shot and it's nice actually having some power. 270hp isn't bad for a mid size suv and you can feel it. The exterior styling is the best out of all the gens but they did drop the ball on the 2014s front end styling. Don't like it much. The 2010-2012 look a lot better. I went from 16mpg towing to 20 mpg towing the same trailer and weight. What i don't like is the limited selection of tires for the 20" wheels. I like the wheels just wish they were at least 8" wide. Other than that it's a great truck and even better off roading than my 99. Yes I take it off road even with the "mall" wheels. The downhill ascent control is great, the 5spd trans gets me good mpgs and having AWD is a nice change. Glad Toyota still makes body on frame suvs.
I got rid of the 20's and went to 17's with the Cooper Discoverer atp's. 5 new rims and tires from Discount Tire....was not much more than 4 new Bridgestone non-duelers.

Still amazed you got out with a stock 4Runner. With that said, I ended up getting a 2017 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium partly because of this video. Thanks man.
Using differential lock could have gotten you out of that mess easily.

That was funny, "I'm just going to drive across this pond here that is probably covered in snow....where did that come from?" Great recovery though...definitely a pucker moment to be had.
This is as scary to watch in 2019 as it was in 2014. And at 11:30 when you got out of the truck it sounds as if you discharged a good load of diarrhea !

That pond looked deceiving and didn't seem to be challenging initially, but those chunks of ice told a different story. An average SUV would have not been able to make it through.
I come back to this video every year just to see your terrified face and to reaffirm how great the 4 runner is .
I'm a Ford guy but 4Runners are totally bad ass. Ever since the Explorer has been turned into a grocery getter I would gladly pick this over them!! I would love it to be equipped with locking diffs and the v8 though!!!

Everyman Driver Car Reviews only 16 so no daily driver have always had a huge interest in cars so I always like to watch reviews and study them, but when I do drive one of my parents cars its 2013 Kia Forte or 2013 Kia Rio, not as exciting as other cars or able to do off road driving like this 4Runner but is still a enjoyable to drive. As far as those negative comments I wouldn't listen to them you obviously know how to drive well enough to get out of that situation.

You know, we live on the other end of the mountains in WA and in early 2021 bought our 4Runner, remembering this video, after we, too, wondered where did that frozen river come from after pointing it there is a frozen river in front of us. Glad to see its still here. Rock on dude.

Great real and authentic review. It doesn't get any more real than that! Hat's off to you and that 4runner for getting you out of that situation. Not many SUV's that I can think of that could've gotten out of that. Thank you Toyota for keeping the great 4runner a TRUE old school SUV. Please don't ever change or compromise when it comes to the 4runner. No unibody ever. Keep it a true body on frame beast!

Great driving and video Dave! The drama was getting intense in that ice/mud hole. :) I bought a 4runner the first year they came out, 1984. Fiberglass top, leaf springs in the front. They sure have come a long ways!

Try not bouncing it off the limiter. Really the best way to generate traction is to have the wheels not spinning like crazy. Either way good save. You had a shocked look but really saved it!
this is why I've had 3 of these rigs... 2 2nd gens and a 3rd gen. Brother has a 4th gen. good driving and a capable rig make an excellent combination. well done sir.

Great video. I'm actually in the comparison phase of a new vehicle purchase and I am looking at the '15 4Runner, Pilot, and Highlander along with the '16 Sorento to replace my '06 Pilot. I'm glad to see how well it handled an unexpected situation with the breakthrough. I was surprised that the street type tires did so well off pavement.

That had me cracking up, good job getting out of that...I've been stuck before in Dubai in mud and sand, and it's really tough to keep traction going, spinning the steering wheel back and forth is the best thing you could have done, although those tires didn't help much. We usually let air out of the tires to get more traction. Good job Dave, love your videos, even all the way over here in the Philippines.

Amazing video. I have a 2000 4runner with 300,000 miles that has always been bulletproof. When it came time to buy a new vehicle I bought a Honda CRV for more efficiency, but after seeing this video I’m going straight to the Toyota dealer to trade for another 4runner. ;-)

This video along with seeing others of how capable this truck is, has made me decide that if ever in the market I would choose the 4Runner Trail Premium, over anything else! It's basically a little Land Cruiser for a bargain price!!! Oh yea, what really was the "little damage" that was done along with loosing a mud flap?

I'd rather have keys over push button. It's mechanical based rather than electronic, meaning better reliability when you go into deep water, that's why they went back to the diff shifter instead of the electronic dial diff shifter from earlier models. But I may be wrong.
That was insane craziness!!! First, you got skills man. Second, the truck has really good capabilities on off-road. Sorry for the camera though, but the film was awesome. Congratulations!

I think someone else broke that into chunks for you. Then it re-froze slightly, nice thin layer of snow to make it look solid, and bam you're in it.
