Thank you Dave! Just salvaged two Lewmar 10 winches and about to salvage two 16s with self tailers as replacements for my very old Barton Australia units! This is an invaluable 7 mins (as the actress said to the bishop) ! Much appreciated sir!

Hi Max, well that makes it all worth while, good on you for having a go. They are not particularly difficult to service, once you've done one, but look a bit daunting until then. Thanks for making the effort to comment, quite made my day 🙂

@@maxsothcott4484 Ha. In later years, when my Mum was starting to have dementia, she let this massively loud fart, and I had never heard her do that in my entire life. I looked at her, shocked, and said "Mum!!!" And she looked over at me and said "Better an empty house than a bad tenant!" And the two of us roared with laughter for about 5 minutes. Apparently it was something her father used to say.

Excellent, thanks very much. Helping a friend tomorrow servicing 14 of them, so this was most helpful!

Hello. I'm wondering about a Lewmar 16st as a furling headsail winch. The yacht is 46ft. Its a used winch and at a good price. Surely it would be better than me pulling it by hand. What do you think?

I use one of the 16's to furl the headsail if it's too windy and I can't manage by hand.

Just thinking of you, buying a boat at your age. Is it one of the best things you have done in the past few years. Does it make you feel young again. Im 62 and just wondering is it for me. Please advise. Kind regards. I know its a deep question. But your actual experience and opinion would be appreciated.

Hi Graham, It is indeed a deep question. Firstly let me just tell you that I did a lot of sailing during 1955 - 1985 so I'm not a beginner and yes , my recent sails along the South Coast of the UK bring back some wonderful memories of the trips in my younger days. Does it make me feel younger, well no but I still get a buzz out of cruising under sail and I have really enjoyed it. I can't tell you if it would be for you. It is expensive to keep a boat in a marina and the upkeep can be surprisingly high. I try and do as much of the maintenance myself, which gives me a better understanding of the boat and its equipment and it has given me a sense of purpose. Sometimes it can be very challenging, this year particularly, I'm removing the old deck paint and repainting. It's hard on your knees, scraping the old paint off, day after day and taking longer than I hoped but I will get it done. Video to follow.
I've made a lot of new friends because of the boat, it's a second home in the summer, and I love the challenge of getting the boat from harbour to harbour just using the wind. I guess my best advice is to visit your local sailing club and chat to people at the bar, someone is bound to want a crew and hopefully you'll get some experience and some advice before you take the plunge.
Best of luck with it - I don't regret buying the boat at 76, I'm 79 this year and really looking forward to finishing the work and getting her afloat again and off to new adventures.. Dave
