      @@IckyEmporerfishing yes I'm from southern louisiana. And I've seen those things at about 4 ft. They will run off all the other fish. Good they are out of the water. Very invasive. Folks there in gar balls with them. I don't like the taste 😋

    Gar have an adapted (vascularized) swim bladder that allows them to breathe air. Handy adaptation for floodplain rivers, but apparently also for surviving encounters with unenlightened anglers. Thanks for helping shine a positive light on native fishes!

    I admire your sense of conservation. Your a good fisherman. Those two species have been here longer than mankind. It's truly disappointing to see people purposely doing things like that to fish.     It's great you went fishing there and found the Gar still alive and returning it to the water. I can't tell you how many times I've been fishing and found a completely trashed location to fish from. Some of us respect the outdoors enough to respectfully keep those spaces clean of debree when we leave. Love your channel and always pleasure watching you catch some really nice fish.

      @John Something The gar and bowfin have existed with bass and catfish for as long as they've been around. That body of water appears pretty stagnant, so the gar and bowfin probably are more adapted to living there, thus why there are more of them. It's a natural process, people who kill "x" fish to try to make a body of water better for another fish species are ignorant.

      They absorb oxygen through the gut if I remember correctly. Quite a few primative fish can, as can a lot of catfish.

    Great job saving that gar! Such a shame how ignorant people can be. All fisherman have a responsibility of conducting themselves in a certain manner. Respect the fish and the environment which sustains them. So many fail and do not deserve a tight line.

    The one thing I haven't been able to wrap my head around is this. You will take a good eating fish or popular fish for people to eat out and cut it up for bait, yet you get upset about bowfin and gars being on the bank. Also, you never did kick that dogfish to see if it was alive because they too are like gar and pop the top of water for air. Just some thoughts that don't make any sense .

      You see the thing about video editing that you obviously haven’t wrapped your mind around is this, you don’t have to include everything you film in the final cut. The dude definitely didn’t just check the gar. He just didn’t include the bowfin because it was dead. Secondly, they are called bait fish for a reason. They are used to catch the game fish. You see there is this thing called the food chain.

      I know Gar's can live in very low oxygen water, can breath air when necessary. Ancient species that fights to live.

    I've seen catfish and bullheads last a long time out of the water, interesting to hear there are others. Very tactful the way you dealt with the mistreatment of those fish. Good stuff here!

    Question: are bowfish native to that area?? If not, that could be the reason ppl toss them on the bank to die. When I catch carp, I don't return them because they are invasive and do more harm to the river and lake than good....

    My wife and i fished the Everglades often and during along drought we could walk where we use to boat. Lots of large puddles and i noticed right away that some puddles had bait fish around the edges and some did not. The puddles with no bait fish often had a large hungry fish waiting for my hook presentation.

    One thing that bothers me is this weird mentality that gar and bowfin are "trash fish" and should be thrown out of the water... but they've been around longer than most of the other fish species here. It's because they're not "game fish". Just sad, man.

    That gar reminds me of when I used to have a pet snakehead and it jumped out the tank clearly after one of the bait fish I put in and had fell on the floor. I couldn’t find him for a day and a half so looked in and around the tank and found him behind the tank and I thought he was gone until I picked him up and he shook so I got him in the water and washed the dust of him and he survived as they can breath air aswell

      I had the same thing happen to a pet snail that kept leaving tank to go dry up in my clean laundry basket! It lived dozens on times from me putting it back in the tank but eventually it took it's last trip to the laundry basket and never rehydrated and was dead dead. Really cool snail. He ate out of my hands... His name was Gary and I had him for so long.

      @@pikenation9841 since I've seen just how intelligent they r, and how special of a bond you can make with a snail that's aquatic and smaller than a golf ball now I REALLY want a giant African land snail. I'm in Florida so it's near impossible to get one shipped here. I want one so so so bad! They get massive... I can only imagine how great of pet they make. I want a few kinds of jumping spiders, and I want a trapdoor spider, and I want some kind of large species of tarantulas that are communal and can live in groups in the same habitat and they don't eat each other. I want slings! Love baby tarantulas! I wish I could catch a jumping spider. I should be able to being in Florida but it's not so easy.

      rebelicious407 haha looks like your a true animal lover like me I’ve got a 5 fish tanks currently setup and a few reptiles and dogs and I study animal care wheee we look after just about any exotic,inverts,farm animals,fish,mammals such as elephants,giraffes,lions etc and most importantly we have a big terrarium full of giant snails if you have an Instagram I will send you a picture of them when I’m in tommorow especially for you!

    I think a lot of people mistake bofin and snake heads so they end up killing what they think is an invasive species but is actually a naturally occurring fish for the area. Nice video and great luck saving that gar. Hopefully videos like this educate some people about these fish!

    Wow! That gar still being alive was amazing! You did save his life. That's cool. I am a bowfisher. I shoot them and they are delicious. I do not discard them on the bank. That is despicable. 😡 They are not "trash" fish like so many people think. They are the most misunderstood fish there is. Catfish are bottom feeders and people love to eat them. Gar are strictly predators, they eat other fish. They are one tough species. A ugly prehistoric delicious fish that should be treated with respect. 👍
