      It should be noted that it's their own firmware built on top of OpenWRT, not vanilla OpenWRT. My only gripe with the GL.iNet is that they market it as "OpenWRT" instead of "Built on OpenWRT", which is a big difference. Looking at GL.iNet's security updates, we can see that they have introduced a number of vulnerabilities in the past in their own code that do not exist in vanilla OpenWRT.
      However, part of the reason this is such a strong product though is that if you want to be more security / privacy oriented with your device, you know for a fact the hardware is very compatible with vanilla OpenWRT and can upgrade from GL.iNet's firmware upgrade interface. This also makes the devices extremely reliable long term, and shows that this company's strength isn't really in their software, but rather their amazing hardware and its compatibility with FOSS projects. That is something that is truly unique and will continue to set this company apart from all of its competitors.

    • @benzhere
      @benzhere 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@preston9239 Yes, I see a couple red flags with this company that makes me hesitate buying anything from them, one of which is what you mentioned above.
      I'm sticking to MikroTik for now, but if they prove themselves trustworthy, or another company comes in and offers hardware made to run OpenWRT, I might switch over to that for home use--I would have to be seriously convinced otherwise for commercial.
      For now, some MikroTik devices can run OpenWRT, but they really aren't built for that OS.

      @@preston9239I personally owned a GL.iNet router for a while. It did DNS things we could not explain, and misbehaved in odd ways frequently. I bought it thinking I was getting OpenWRT, just like most of their customers. What I got was something I was unable to take full ownership of due to the modifications, and it actively caused issues with our internet. I absolutely would not recommend a GL.iNet device for anyone concerned with personal information securty or having full control of their equipment. I'm actively disappointed to see it so openly sponsored by this channel.

    GL.iNet makes some good stuff. Good to see they make a "regular" router as they kept making cool, but specialty travel routers and other devices. Their Puli (GL-XE300) saved my ass as there is not much out there for a SIM router, with a battery and ethernet port.

The Spitz literally was out just for a few Weeks to this Point where I was buying it. When we got 2Gb Hybrid Fibre internet where I live, our ISP said they would provide us with an appropriate router, which I thought would save me having to spend a ton of money on a router. They provided me with one that had a single 2.5Gb port. So I bought one of these and connected the second port to a 5Gbe Network switch.
    These routers are absolutly fantastic.
    One thing I found with it that I wish Jake had covered was the WiFi range on it. I live in a brick-built house. I set the WiFi signal strength to "low" and I can still connect to our WiFi network from 60ft away, down the street.
    Never mind your ISP saying they guarentee coverage across your whole home using mesh pods they will provide. Just get one of these routers.

      @awesomestuff9715 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +28

      except speed and distance depends on the environment you are in, so any measurements somebody does in their area will not be very representative of what you will experience, and only measurements done in your specific environment. This is why we test with a small deployment of AP's to see how the coverage is and if any issues occur, before commiting to a full setup in a commercial setting.

    • @ianwakers
      @ianwakers 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      @@awesomestuff9715 Yes, but you can do a very simple thing to account for that, which is to compare it to other routers in the same environment.

      @KeithZim 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +11

      @@ianwakers The last thing a new company with limited resource wants to do is call out the competition.. This was a sponsored video. AKA commercial... The simple fact is speed and range issues are usually because of user error in failing to read the instructions about proper placement and assuming that on the floor behind the TV under 4 power cables is not a big deal.

    • @ianwakers
      @ianwakers 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@KeithZim Well that's not true. The hardware and antenna arrangement are the biggest factors regardless of placement. You can set everything up perfectly but if your router has a 2x2 setup it's not gonna do very well with multiple devices connected to it.

    get this or the travel ver,
    then pair it with UCG Ultra from ubiquity, for both adblocking AND IDS IPS [ unifi doesnt support custom adblock lists so meh ]
    and you can reuse eitther Flint 2 as wireless itself or AP to UCG,
    what a time to be alive in the networking space

    I have this already and it's the only router I found under $1k that guaranteed the features I needed which seems to be basic. Apartment forces me to use their wireless router so I have the WAN setup via Wifi. Then I have both 2.5g set to LAN mode so my own computer and server are hooked up at 2.5g speeds. I couldn't find any other router that could do something like that.

    OpenVPN is indeed single threaded but nowadays there is DCO (Data Channel Offload) available that should enhance performance since it does the heavy lifting on the kernel side.
