  • So, we did explore the Chinese kampung (village) of Dungun and we were very surprised to find an old Chinese settlement. Not all of Dungun is Chinese but this village is fully Chinese and trasports us into another time. Of course we did eat some Chinese food, let's see if we liked it.

I prefer these kinds of places than touristy places, these kinds of places has a lot of nostalgia and nice chill atmosphere you can't get from touristy places. I also love that you walk off the beaten path and go to back allies, abandon houses etc. I like doing these things too to soak in the vibe and not many travelers do these, very interesting to see these back alleys, abandon houses etc. I love these kinds of weird places that not many people go to. Love what you do ❤️❤️❤️.

Long time ago, Kuala Dungun is the busiest town in Dungun. But nowadays a lot of shop move to sura gate and Bandar baru Pak Sabah. That river name is Sungai Dungun.

lots things happen like your mention Covid19 but even before covid the demographics changed due to the mortality rate which decline of the population due to youth population or working population migration to the city, natural death or ageing/retired of senior citizens, international migration, smaller family unit due to high quality of living, and so all. Just like most smaller places around Malaysia like this or older townships experience a similar problem, the only way to revitalize this township to be living again is to promote de-urbanization meaning going back to smaller towns due to the similar/non-existence gap between urban and rural populations nowadays in Malaysia. In fact, a lot of high-income people prefer living in rural because of retirement, investment or changing to simpler lifestyles.

Awesome video. My family moved from rural Scotland to Dungun in the early 80s when I was 7 whilst my Dad worked for Petronas.
We rented a new house from the then (and possibly still) owner of the shop on the corner (Mr Leu, though my spelling may be off there).
At the time that shop was alcohol and some foodstuffs (I don't recall jewellery) and it was a big draw for the expat community. I cant think why.............

Kuala Dungun was a happening place in the 1950s as it was the end point of the railway transporting iron ore from Bukit Besi. From Kuala Dungun, the iron ore was barged out to be loaded on to ships to Japan. The mine stopped by the end of 2960s.

Further down to south of Dungun, there’s a town called Paka and there’s also chinese community like this here including fishermen. Actually the shops are not really closed due to pandemic. Over the years, youngsters moved over the west coast especially Kuala Lumpur for better jobs. Some even brought their parents to live with them in bigger cities. The chinese were known to be traders and the shoplots are usually their homes as well. That’s why there are usually two floors on those shops; 1st floor being the shop and the 2nd floor is where they lived. But when the family moved out, the building doesn’t really being abandoned. Instead, they used it for bird nests business. For the past decade, this has been the norms for shop owners in the east coast. Less and less small shops like these being opened as more big shopping malls being built here.

Simple but healthy and yummy meal at that Chinese shop. Yeah, we, Chinese called it economic rice. Haha... Even though spoons and forks are provided, Vincent and Olive still prefer to eat with hand. Good that you like that soup noodles. Wow, you are a pro when using chopsticks. Well done, Mr Moonshine. You are right, those offerings are meant for the hungry ghosts who are let off from the Gate of Hell for one month....known as The Hungry Ghost Month/Festival.

The small Chinese town of Dungun is really very deserted, many old houses and even the streets look very deserted. Perhaps the Chinese once had great splendor here.In today's era of extreme reality where people can't sleep, this place is like a nest of perfect peace which is very sweet.

Kuala Dungun is overwhelmingly malays (not surprising as around 95+ percent population in Terengganu is malay), but there are a few places that we can call it as Chinese streets in the kuala Dungun town. the chinese here (in east coast), are more assimilated with the local cultures compare to KL, Selangor etc. even their malays language are spoken in local dialect.

The birds sounds were a recorded one to attract the birds into the building. Its illegal, but in a small town, the enforcement is nonexistent.
The Chinese lived in the urban areas because of the trades. Plus during emergency (communist era) , the Chinese were resettled, thus why you have some pockets of chinese area in a malay majority places. Which made them vulnerable during the race riot 1969.

Those are swiftlet farms. What you hear are primarily speakers playing the sound of swiftlets which attract these birds to live and make nests, which are harvested and sold as an expensive Chinese delicacy. It is common all over Malaysia to convert unused/abandoned houses to these swiftlet farms.
