A decent mechanic is so much more valuable to society than so many professions that make more money. Thanks for the video. Having my 2017 latch replaced right now and they just told me they were having problems “recalibrating” it. Doesn’t look like there is much to “recalibrate”
I replaced a latch recently for the first time. I followed the Ford Service Procedure and yes there is a recalibration procedure and I was actually having issues recalibrating it. In the service procedure it's very easy in theory but for some reason the latch wasn't liking it. The latch has position sensors inside of it so I imagine the sensors have to learn every position.
@@R3YNZ Can you adjust the calibration on your own? I backed my 67k mile edge into a curb and knocked the exhaust off the hanger, scratched the skid plate, and bumper cover bulged off the clips. This is when the tailgate started not unlocking sometimes after pressing the button, and even when unlocked, will not open on it's own power, just manually lifting.
I can't THANK YOU enough for posting this!! 2018 Edge - been having issues for a year with the back latch. Finally, almost completely wouldn't open. Bought the part for $75 Cdn. (That's $5 US) Notes: 1. Had to remove a bar above the actuator to remove it. 2. It was easier to remove all of the panels. They installed easier starting with the large one. I'm not mechanically inclined so I really appreciate your well laid out video.
If you use your trunk a lot it will fail. My mom uses her for her house cleaning business and this fixed the trunk. Not only was the actuator failing but it was also killing her battery. 3 batteries later and 1 new latch the problem has been resolved. Thank you!
Just a quick note to say thank-you for posting this video. It saved me boatload of money. The part number by itself was worth a bunch, as I purchased an offbrand version for less than $50 on Amazon, vs. a couple of hundred for the Ford version. Installation was pretty easy, but just like yourself, it was a bit of a struggle getting things lined up at the end! The only recommendation would be to have the video flipped, as it looked like you were going righty-loosy when taking off the screws!!! :)
Just replaced mine too! Just wish that the plastic trim was easier to put back up. That’s the hardest part. I wouldn’t mind plastic screws to hold the trim in place instead of the friction type pins..

Did y’all’s latch just quit working all together or intermittent? Ours acts like it doesn’t receive a signal to open or it’s like one side of the hatch is stuck. I’ve tried to manually open it through the little hole but i guess i haven’t figured out how the mechanism works yet. Haven’t found anything that has the door jammed in the latch area.
Just got through replacing the lift gate locking motor assembly. I agree with the folks below in that the hardest part was getting the damn trim back into place without snapping off all the pin connectors.....Thanks for the video, it had to have saved me big $$$'s....keep up the good work!!
Fixed my intermittent 2019 Escape hatch not opening. $200 part with tax. Had all the tools in my basement. Thanks for giving me the confidence to do myself. Took me 38 minutes, start to finish, which includes finding the torx bit in my basement,

To install the largest trim piece, I first removed the two small side trim pieces. Then I used two long adjustable straps to temporarily hold the large center trim roughly in place. The straps need to be long enough to encircle the hatch and trim. I used small towels to avoid scratching the door. In that way, the trim was floating just below the raised hatch. I then was able to position the clips in the metal holes. I had purchased clips from Amazon to replace a couple that broke previously. Hope this helps someone.
@FordBossMe Rick, what is very perplexing is the electronic aspect of this problem. I have yet to purchase a new latch simply because if I pull the 30A fuse, wait 30 sec, and then reinstall it, the liftgate works perfectly once again. If the latch module was truly the problem, it should never work no matter how many times I reset it by pulling the fuse. Something ain't logically lining up here...
2018 MKX. Liftgate will randomly open on its own when the vehicle is turned off in the garage or even when it is locked outdoors at work. If left long enough it will drain the battery. Most recently I noticed the liftgate exterior button won't open the gate, but the FOB will activate it.
Thanks! I used this video to replace latch on my 2017 Ford Edge with a manual lift gate. The 2017 has one electrical connector instead of two, but is otherwise the same. I wanted to share one issue I had. After replacing the latch, the "liftgate ajar" message didn't go away. On a hunch, I closed the latch manually with a flathead screwdriver, then closed the lift gate. The message went away after and hasn't returned going on a week now.

When I installed the new latch, it closed but now it won’t open. When I press the button it makes a sound, but just won’t open.
Thank you Boss! I have a '16 Lincoln MKX with the same issue. The rear hatch will not completely unlock and open. The hatch open indicator stays on. So I actually have to climb in the back and manually unlock the latch, which I hope will not be a big issue. Any special tool or procedure to manually release the locking mechanism behind that access panel? Just waiting for my replacement part and ready to fix. Thanks for the video.
@@josuecastillo2561 I purchased the latch motor for the hatch off of EBay for a great price. It works just fine, 10 months later. However, that interior panel was very difficult as I broke several clips. The upper corner trim pieces have a locking tab that breaks off easily. Be very careful with those. The replacement clips behind the main panel were about 50 dollars to replace. You will still come out way ahead on $.

My 2017 escape had “sticking” issues where it would not open. It would act like it might but the receiver piece wouldn’t open up to allow the lift gate to swing up and open. The first thing to do is pull the fuse and see if it resets the opener. If you still have issues then replace the latch/opener that this video is based on. It’s like a $150 part and if you follow the video it’ll save you $1,000 at the dealer.. If you still have issues after that then you might need to replace the hydraulic openers on the sides.
Thank a lot had the same problem with my 2016 edge uk model with limited tools did it 10 minutes ... Ford told me £150 per hour just to find the problem then charge me what ever after that they were gona take me to the cleaners 😢.......... thank you very much 🙏🫡
How do you manually open the lift gate once the latch has failed? The older models had a release lever on the inside. I can't find one on our 2017 Edge
@@10GTE There isn't any way to release the latest generation models. I found a TH-cam video showing how to chisel the latch into from the inside. We just kept trying and it eventually opened one more time and I was able to remove the latch and replace it.

Not a great option (can't believe Ford would think this is acceptable) Just kept trying and got lucky...it opened one last time and I replaced the latch. I took the old one apart and it seems rugged enough...must be weak circuit somewhere in the modules. Very disappointed in Ford!
You can pull the power liftgate fuse for 20 seconds and reinstall. After you put your fusebox back, you will hear the trunk latch release. The other way is to disconnect your battery but then you may have to do the relearn procedure for the adaptive shifting and fuel trim.
Thank you for your video. Someone installed the plastic cover and forgot to replace the 2 7mm screws. Now my trunk won't auto close and latch. I need those 2 7mm screws. Please where can I buy them from?
I don't think this would be the fix for yours I'm assuming that you might have an issue with the automatic open piston shock there's a motor inside it if you have the automatic open or you just push the button in the trunk opens by itself if you look at the back lift gate you'll see that there is too Pistons back there and one of them has a motor in it and a lot of times that piston with the motor wears out
It would intermittently just not open the trunk at all and then finally after six visits to the dealership and we couldn't confirm what was going on a code popped up for the trunk latch malfunction
I have a 2015 edge sel. Power liftgate wants to open but seems like it pushes more on drivers side and doesn't seem to disengage. Once in a while it will open. Any help would be appreciated
One shock has a motor for the rear lift gate and one is a Oil piston Shock - I bet the oil piston shock is no good and not assisting the motor side anymore

I've got the same issue and it's one of many reasons I'll never buy another Ford! The whole thing seems suspicious. If the liftgate module has gone bad, then it would stand to reason it should never work. And yet, when the liftgate works intermittently, it operates perfectly fine. I suspect there is something else electronically that is wrong.
My wife has a 2018 Ford Edge and the tailgate won’t lock. No issues with doors, just the tailgates that remains unlocked. Will replacing this fix my problem?
I have a 2017 Ford Escape that the latch will not open anymore. It was only working intermittently, but now is consistently not working. I replaced the latch assembly but it is still not working with the new latch (I purchased the correct part from my local dealer). Any suggestions?
I just replaced this myself on a 2017 escape se. Trunk shuts and close now. But on my dash is says the tunk is still open. And when i go to double lock it blows the horn twice letting me know its not locked. What do i need to do next?
You have to adjust the striker that it latches on to so the little bar that looks like a box that it hooks onto it has an adjustment plate you're going to have to pull it more into the vehicle so the door pulls in tighter

Don’t know if you got around to it yet.. I sat around for 6 months before finally changing mine out. Followed the video and it worked great on my 2017 Escape.
@@Sean-ft7ys you should be able to buy the part online for maybe $180 or so. Be patient when putting the back trim panel back on. I got a little frustrated and pushed hard when a clip wasn’t lined up and snapped one (plastic clip).. not a huge deal just breaking one.. it’s still holding together well enough.
what's really weird about this is this customer has been in here six times and I haven't been able to verify any concern, the liftgate is worth every single time and nothing has malfunctioned at all but then after the 6th time " finally " I had a code to go off of and it was a faulty liftgate latch that was intermittently not working and sometimes it would be fine for months before it would malfunction
2015 ford edge has a issue where it doesn't want to open it binds.got it to open by deactivating switch in cluster then activating it again.. opened after that it wont.. one side moves other side won't budge..
Lol. All I had was a 2016 Dodge Ram 1500 A/C not blowing any air. It ended up being a faulty blower motor and blower motor 40A fuse. I have a 2009 Nissan Maxima S that I have to do a 100,000 mile service on it this Monday.
Spark plugs, change all fluids, cabin air filter, engine air filter, fuel injection/induction service, serpentine belt replacement, battery and charging system check and A/C performance test.
There is a video out there somewhere that shows how to manually pop it open from the inside. Thankfully for me if I sit there and cycle through buttons usually after like 5-10 minutes I’ll eventually get it to open.. Guess I’m lucky..

Watch your video several times couldn't you just take a trim removal tool and remove the back part by the Latch instead of removing all of it you wouldn't have to fight trying to get it back in?
I just did it myself. If you tried to only pop the trim at the bottom you’d have to bend the back panel piece quite a ways to give yourself enough room to work. Far easier to just take l the trim down but it is a bit of a pain to put back up in place.
@@FordBossMe Can't believe they they put that stuff on a 2019. That Tbird you looked at a few days ago, the door panels have 3 hooks. You just take two screws, one on the on the mirror trim and tip it out.

I watched your whole video and no where does it show how to op en the door manually. I've been a mechanic for over 40 years and one things for sure you can't fix stupid no one can. There is another video that shows how to open the door and I'm sure others will find it like I did. Your video is useless.
My 2017 escape has an intermittent problem. It won't pull closed all the way and then half the time it won't open. It's infuriating. Ordered the actuator. Looks like the hardest part will be the plastic clips. Hope this fixes it
When it has trouble opening and closing there is a shock on the rear truck that is fatter than the other and it has a motor in it and that gets weak because the gas shock typically on the passenger side wears out and doesn't help assist it anymore

We have 50k miles on a 2015. It’s 8 years old. My wife uses the rear hatch about 10x a day

I have a 2018 Ford Edge SEL and I replaced the latch but it still says it's not latching but not everytime.

I have a 2015 edge sel. Power liftgate wants to open but seems like it pushes more on drivers side and doesn't seem to disengage. Once in a while it will open. Any help would be appreciated
One shock has a motor for the rear lift gate and one is a Oil piston Shock - I bet the oil piston shock is no good and not assisting the motor side anymore
Was the original issue on this car related to the lift gate not opening on its own?

I've got the same issue and it's one of many reasons I'll never buy another Ford!
The whole thing seems suspicious. If the liftgate module has gone bad, then it would stand to reason it should never work. And yet, when the liftgate works intermittently, it operates perfectly fine. I suspect there is something else electronically that is wrong.
Will this repair work on a Ford, or only a DROF?
My wife has a 2018 Ford Edge and the tailgate won’t lock. No issues with doors, just the tailgates that remains unlocked. Will replacing this fix my problem?

I have a 2017 Ford Escape that the latch will not open anymore. It was only working intermittently, but now is consistently not working. I replaced the latch assembly but it is still not working with the new latch (I purchased the correct part from my local dealer). Any suggestions?

I just replaced this myself on a 2017 escape se. Trunk shuts and close now. But on my dash is says the tunk is still open. And when i go to double lock it blows the horn twice letting me know its not locked. What do i need to do next?
You have to adjust the striker that it latches on to so the little bar that looks like a box that it hooks onto it has an adjustment plate you're going to have to pull it more into the vehicle so the door pulls in tighter
@@FordBossMe thank you. I just did this a few hours ago see if it would help and did. Just got in the trunk area and pulled on the handle and now it shuts and locks fine. Saved me about $200 today just getting the part myself and doing it my self.
Will this video work for replacing this part on a 17 Ford escape titanium with power liftgate? I understand we are talking escape vs edge but it must be somewhat similar
I think it will but it's always nice to take your vinegar and check with your local dealer and they'll give you the numbers that you need

How different is this process for a 2017 Ford Escape? My dealer charging $600+ to swap and this looks like it took you about 15 minutes. Just gonna do myself
I don't know it's been a while since I've done one so you're going to have to take a peek at it and get an idea you'll know when you look at it
Don’t know if you got around to it yet.. I sat around for 6 months before finally changing mine out.
Followed the video and it worked great on my 2017 Escape.

Be patient when putting the back trim panel back on. I got a little frustrated and pushed hard when a clip wasn’t lined up and snapped one (plastic clip).. not a huge deal just breaking one.. it’s still holding together well enough.

what's really weird about this is this customer has been in here six times and I haven't been able to verify any concern, the liftgate is worth every single time and nothing has malfunctioned at all but then after the 6th time " finally " I had a code to go off of and it was a faulty liftgate latch that was intermittently not working and sometimes it would be fine for months before it would malfunction

2015 ford edge has a issue where it doesn't want to open it binds.got it to open by deactivating switch in cluster then activating it again.. opened after that it wont.. one side moves other side won't budge..
Unless rear hatch needs to be readjusted it sounds like the motor or something's going bad

Lol. All I had was a 2016 Dodge Ram 1500 A/C not blowing any air. It ended up being a faulty blower motor and blower motor 40A fuse. I have a 2009 Nissan Maxima S that I have to do a 100,000 mile service on it this Monday.

Spark plugs, change all fluids, cabin air filter, engine air filter, fuel injection/induction service, serpentine belt replacement, battery and charging system check and A/C performance test.

How can you remove a latch with the tail gate closed.
There is a video out there somewhere that shows how to manually pop it open from the inside. Thankfully for me if I sit there and cycle through buttons usually after like 5-10 minutes I’ll eventually get it to open..

Watch your video several times couldn't you just take a trim removal tool and remove the back part by the Latch instead of removing all of it you wouldn't have to fight trying to get it back in?
I did it how I did because it's the best route for success to go without breaking anything
I just did it myself. If you tried to only pop the trim at the bottom you’d have to bend the back panel piece quite a ways to give yourself enough room to work.
Far easier to just take l the trim down but it is a bit of a pain to put back up in place.
ugh..those Christmas tree clips are a nightmare.

@@FordBossMe Can't believe they they put that stuff on a 2019. That Tbird you looked at a few days ago, the door panels have 3 hooks. You just take two screws, one on the on the mirror trim and tip it out.

Not helpful at all. No where do you show how to open the lift gate. Once the door is open anyone can change the door latch.
So I think you missed the part that this was multiple videos not just one and you missed the part that there's a whole comment section full of even ladies that did this job their self and didn't have a problem and understood the assignment but you sir did not and because you're lack thereof you want to make it my problem yet everybody else in the comment section pretty much understood exactly what to do but you didn't so now you want to put that on me and that's not going to happen you are going to own that because at the end of the day your s*** still not fixed because you didn't follow directions or pay attention, in the military we called that attention to detail and you simply just do not have that
I watched your whole video and no where does it show how to op en the door manually. I've been a mechanic for over 40 years and one things for sure you can't fix stupid no one can. There is another video that shows how to open the door and I'm sure others will find it like I did. Your video is useless.
My 2017 escape has an intermittent problem. It won't pull closed all the way and then half the time it won't open. It's infuriating. Ordered the actuator. Looks like the hardest part will be the plastic clips. Hope this fixes it
When it has trouble opening and closing there is a shock on the rear truck that is fatter than the other and it has a motor in it and that gets weak because the gas shock typically on the passenger side wears out and doesn't help assist it anymore
