Carsen Ryan is a beast. As a UCLA and BYU fan, I was super bummed he transferred from UCLA but glad he’s a Cougar now. I really hope BYU utilizes his talents this year. At UCLA, they had Habermehl and Matavao coming in from Oregon which made it tough for him to get many balls thrown to him.
We haven't used the TE with great efficacy since Isaac Rex's Freshman/Sophomore year. I hope we get back to it with Carsen Ryan, he was a beast at UCLA and underutilized at Utah.
@johnmcho a STAR tight end. A tight end that only blocks is just a small lineman. You're better off lining-up a second-string tackle at the end position. A TE's value is that he can block, run routes, catch, and get YAC.
Biggest concerns for next year's roster are both trenches and CB. Lotta guys graduating or going to the NFL so we need to add some depth at those positions. I think we are fine at WR. Jojo, Kingston, Marion, Hagen are all guys that hopefully will take a step forward next season.
No TE is gonna shine unless Arod targets them more. You are saying that we haven't had good TEs? I hope you are right about them targeting more. But I have heard this song, many times... now we have a good one, Arod will use him... Yes, Rex was good, but it seemed like Arod really didn't exploit him, either.
Until BYU gets a real QB Coach /OC the offense will continue to struggle moving chains and suffer less than adequate explosive output. ARod was a WR and so the TE and RB receiving have disappeared from his offense that seems heavy on WR sweeps and passes.
BYU always has always had such impactful tight ends. They are such a weapon if utilized correctly and many of the lds prospects are big athletic white guys that fit the bill. Meaning byu can always recruit great tight ends
Jake - I agree Gentry would be great, and his measurables are impressive. Isn’t Teague Anderson out of Utah state a more proven commodity/higher priority than Gentry? I believe Anderson has two years of starting experience and was one of Utah states better players on offense. Do you know if Anderson is interested? I realize byu didn’t recruit him out of high school so I don’t know if that left him salty towards us.
We've had talented TE's but for whatever reason they aren't really part of our offense. I don't think it's gonna be any different with Carsen Ryan. Dallin Holker was right leaving BYU and betting on himself. Now he's in the NFL, and he never would've gotten there from BYU. Keanu Hill was a dog at WR, then they moved him to TE and now he has 12 catches on the year. What if Bowers goes somewhere and kills it? At this point that wouldn't surprise me.
When it comes to the OT position, Ethan Thomason will be home from his mission soon and is enrolled starting in January. He graduated HS early specifically so he can have a full offseason post mission to knock the rust off.
Totally false. BYU is being ultra selective. Unlike many universities they don't need to bring in a ton of guys this year because they didn't have 20 guys transfer out.

A-Rod needs to use Ryan! And the other TEs. The TE blocking is huge too.
Thanks for answering my question, Jake!

Wasn’t Isaac Rex’s best year with Grimes as OC?
Yes…but that was also the year that play calling responsibilities got taken from grimes and given to Arod
What's the use of a star tight end that only blocks.
It keeps your QB upright.

The big change we need is a new OC. Do they have those in the Portal?

TE’s are extinct under AROD and they’re 4 star type guys who don’t get used then they transfer out. Rex senior year phased out.
You're right. I'll bet Ryner Swanson doesn't come back to BYU after his mission.
So true!

Is there a reason why we are NOT getting any Portal options? Does the bowl game hurt recruiting for NIL portal for BYU?
He is as a great player

Anderson committed elsewhere
@ yeah I saw. I’m surprised he went to NC State. Although 2J and Anae are there….
Was Crew Wakely not under scholarship??? I was sorry to see him go into the portal.
He was not on scholarship so far as I am aware
So sad. Wakely had a great year. Tough to see him go.

A lot of hills issues were an inability to get open and catch the ball when it went his way. He was also disadvantaged by the full stable of WRs.

I would love for him to be ready to go! Ethan has incredible talent & could be a starter early
@@LockedOnCougarsJoe Brown should be back right?
@@malaw514 Yes, but he's an interior lineman. Likely a guard
Not with a rod
Why would anyone want to play tight end for Arod? WRONG Jake. BYU has had 4 star tight ends. Arod still won't use them.
There's no way to sugarcoat it: BYU is getting their ass kicked in the portal
Totally false. BYU is being ultra selective. Unlike many universities they don't need to bring in a ton of guys this year because they didn't have 20 guys transfer out.
He'll get the opportunity to block forsure just not catch, pretty frustrating.
Get rid of the Byu OC AROD who does not use tight ends. Tight Ends where the main standard of the offense. Fire AROD NOW!!!
Ethan Erickson did not look good this year. He's a terrible blocker too.
How dare you. Jingle all the way is terrible.
Wilson gone
Utah liked Landon King better so he bailed.... again.
