It's fun, because reading between the lines is when you notice that she is just looking to see if anyone is showing fear or anxiety. The training and assignments that come with the benefits of becoming a first class mage means that seeing her using a taste of her power shouldn't cause a prospective member to second guess themselves. This is especially true when you realize that the true goal of Serie is to train demon slayers and not just "mages", because they have been the ultimate threat for thousands of years.

Judging from the previous fight with the blood-using demon who could put a tracker on Fern's clothes, I think the laundry spell is indeed suitable for her, it makes the enemy unable to put a tracker on Fern's body anymore and makes her undetectable.

When you realize that Serie's restrained mana output is like Frieren's unrestrained output, it puts things in perspective. I think it's also one of the reasons Fern can tell Serie is suppressing her mana, since she's trained with Frieren at such an early age. She's grown up being very acute to it.
we genuinely never got a true look at frierens unrestrained mana output, you could tell in her fight against aura she was releasing it slowly until it tipped the scales enough, it could be far beyond what we saw there. but then again frieren is stated to not even be a special kind of mage at her age, but shes basically 1 of 2 mages at that age so the comparison is serie who seems to have a restrained output but is fluctuating as if its badly done meanwhile frierens mana is restrained without fluctuation or fault, only appearing the size frieren chooses. (also frieren is a stealth build while is more likely to be a glass cannon or a tank)
Fern selected a unique spell that she will use literally every day, yielding a constant, tangible return on her happiness and well being. It's probably the sanest pick anyone has ever made as their reward.

I really liked the character of WIrbel since the moment he said "I need a moment to collect my thoughts before I kill someone", right after explaining that he had to kill children by the hundreds in different wars. Even after all that, he clings to the bits of humanity left in him.
Since Himmel technically wasn’t the hero, my assumption is that Stark is. Think about it he is a human who doesn’t know his own strength, so much so that his teacher was pushed into fighting him seriously out of instinct. The same guy who was tail whipped by a dragon so hard it left a crater and he walked it off. Then there was the episode with the hero sword and it seemed Stark was drawn to it. Himmel may have been a Hero through action but Stark is the destined Hero.

Serie doesnt just give the grimoire as a reward. She basically transfers all her knowledge about a spell they want to their brain. The main catch is its "transferring" not "copying" so Serie will forget the spell she just transferred. She's not just mildly shocked or disappointed by this. She's also annoyed because now she has to relearn that. Frieren said its a Legendary spell from Mythical Era, I imagine any spell from that era is so hard to learn or takes time. This means Serie will be doing manual laundry for a few weeks or months 🤣 Frieren's "Serve her right" gives sibling rivalry 🤣🤣🤣
nope, its only on the instance of denkens request, because that spell is required to be cultivated for more than 200 years to be effective enough to use against a high level curse hence she stated that first before giving denkens request, other spells she can just give the grimoir or teach it. hence the living grimoir .
Considering Frieren say She can beat most with the "basic" magic that Frieren enforce to Her, She is Frieren's student and it's a peace time😬 It's normal for Her to ask such Spell especially the fact Frieren also gather these Everyday Magic😃
If you think about it, that kind of spell is many times more complex than most offensive ones, and given its limited contribution to survival rate, it makes sense for the only person to knows of it to be 7k years old 😭
In all honesty, they don't fight things a whole ton. When they do, it's good to have a good fighting spell... but like @zir456 says, she can beat most with just the basics anyways. The real battle she fights every single day (sometimes multiple times a day if things go bad), is LAUNDRY. Keeping clean and smelling nice is a constant, ongoing, never ending struggle.. magnified only much moreso for the traveling adventurer. Never scoff at quality of life improvements. 😄
Do you know how massive the laundry industry is? A spell that any mage can learn to instantly clean, dry (and presumably de-crease) all of your clothes would destroy such an industry once humanity spreads that spell to all of its mages. Wars would be simplified by having one mage keep all soldiers' clothes clean despite the horrible terrain/weather, and save on carrying heavy supplies. Of course Fern and Frieren have no interest in leading humanity at the moment so the legendary spell goes to waste 😅
Silly as it is, it could have lore implications. They could have had a long era of war and violence, especially with a Demon King around. If the people had to save one spell or the other, they'll keep the ones necessary to fight back against threats. Do that for hundreds of years and the "useless" spells die out, and kept only by mages like Serie. People would never know such a spell even exist unless elves like Frieren tell them it does. Given that, the world of Frieren is pretty sad and chaotic with all the destruction going on. So heroes like Himmel touching the lives of everyday folks doing menial tasks becomes more impactful.
Also reminds me of the different magics portrayed in fantasy settings. In older traditional works, like those of Tolkien/LotR, the type of magic used is often referred to as "low" magic. While the world has wizards, and magical beings, the direct effect magic has is more nuanced. The spells wizards cast aren't very show-y, yet inhabitants of these worlds still consider wizards frighteningly powerful. They can charm people or animals, alter the weather, manipulate crops/flora, minor illusions etc. Newer fantasy works, like Harry Potter, make more use of "high" magic. It's much more flashy, fireballs, lighting, powerful curses, etc. They still reference "low" magic, usually as an "old" / "ancient" magic that is considered powerful, but again often works in more subtle and mysterious ways.
I also feel like it's just takes a lot more control to do something like cleaning laundry than it does to harness destructive magic - you have to carefully remove dirt from clothes and leave them smelling nice without destroying them, and any technique that can be used to simplify that process is just impressive
I think it's also because self defence is a lot more basic to a race's survival than sanitation and self-presentation. Humanity developed team tactics and weapons of war long before they discovered plumbing and detergent. After all, having your clothes be stained from bad washing won't kill you immediately, but not having a magical spell powerful enough to defend against Zoltraak or to instantly kill a common demon probably will. The spare time a magician can devote to inventing something like cleaning clothes every day is a luxury in comparison.
Its to do with the complexity of combat and mundane tasks. Shooting some energy is much simpler than making minute transmutation to safely make sour grapes
Never have to do laundry again... And if you wanted to you could start up a laundry business and rack in the dough like its raining money and hardy have any expenses or wait time. Yep. That's a Helluva spell.
Depends on the situational requirements and the mana cost. I can imagine the mana cost to be small so that’s no problem. But the spell could require you to wear the clothes or “have ownership” over the item. Though if it’s a mythological spell (literally mythic), then it’s probably universally applicable. By that logic, specificity is the enemy of potency, as the more limited the concept of the spell is, the less flexibility it has in its application. A spell with a broad/simple concept can be reinterpreted more widely, making it more useful. An interesting facet of this magic system is that "Mythic era" spells are almost inherently more powerful/useful because they're from a time where magic was new and mages were still working with broad concepts rather than specificity. They didn't need a spell for cleaning specific garments or materials, they just needed a laundry spell. By not trapping themselves into narrow thinking, they inadvertently created a wildly useful utility spell. Imagine using it to remove poison or disease, or an enchantment, or a trace! Also, what constitutes "clothes" could be malleable as well (use it to maintain armor, or footwear, etc.).

Serie proving again how hard it is to understand humans - all the spells known and unknown - Fern chooses less laundry. But if you think on it…it’s a notable investment. Not only can blood or other trackers can’t be used effectively on clothing, but Fern set herself up to have an easy retirement after adventuring is done - she can open a business in cleaning clothes Royalty/Nobles will pay millions for a monthly subscription in weekly laundry or rushed *_I need this clean and dry within the hour!_* sort of rushed.
I would compare it to Pokemon. Anyone serious about any of those games... what is the first thing they aim to do? ... I mean, it's the tagline "Gotta catch 'em all" ... Serie just is the completionist of Magic.
Denken said he has the power to order entire countries around and i don't think being a 1st class mage gives you that same political power. also Denken was an Imperial Mage before he was 1st class so they seem to be different things entirely
Aside from showing the stark difference in perspective of the use of magic between Serie and Frieren/Fern, Fern's choice to take the laundry spell as her reward is [maybe unintentionally?] the ultimate insult she could give to Serie, even more than refusing an apprenticeship with her. It's almost like saying, "Anything I could want to learn I'll learn from my master, not you... That laundry spell looks nice though"
With that laundry spell, you never need to buy clothings anymore also, take a bath and just use the spell to clean your clothes before wearing them. One set of clothes for each season!!
Magic that completely cleans the clothing. So all dirt and microbes and such? What prevents this from being modified and upscaled to work over large areas as a means of purifying areas that have toxins or disease? Or being weaponized to remove something that is vital to living? This could truly be legendary magic if all it requires is imagination to alter for drastically different results.

おそらく、翻訳の齟齬による誤解の問題かと思いますが「勇者」という日本語は元々は今のファンタジーゲームの「勇者」の事ではなかったのです。
古くは1220年代頃の『平治物語』の中で「忠宗・景宗も、随分血気の勇者にて」と使われたり、紀元前551年頃中国の春秋時代の『論語』にも登場している言葉ですが、職業としての「勇者」という概念を、日本で広めたのはドラゴンクエストだった、というのが多くの日本人の共通認識なのです。
それまでの「勇者」は文字通り「勇ましい者」という意味で、今の「魔王を倒す者」という概念の勇者になったのは、という意味です。
英語だと「ブレイバー」と翻訳される事もありますが「勇気がある人」という翻訳は少し齟齬があって、日本では勇気がなくても勇者です。
それを逆手に取ったのが「ダイの大冒険」のポップだと思っていて、ポップは魔法使いですが「ブレイバー」でした。勇者ダイはブレイバーではなかったのです。
あー、ダメだ。Google翻訳で確認してみたけど、もう翻訳がダメなんだ。 フリーレンの字幕もヒーローと書かれてる。
日本では「英雄」「ヒーロー」「勇者」は全て違うものですが、普通に翻訳にかけると、英語だと全てが「HERO」と訳されてしまいます。

これらは全て違う意味があります。

But if you think on it…it’s a notable investment.
Not only can blood or other trackers can’t be used effectively on clothing, but Fern set herself up to have an easy retirement after adventuring is done - she can open a business in cleaning clothes
Royalty/Nobles will pay millions for a monthly subscription in weekly laundry or rushed *_I need this clean and dry within the hour!_* sort of rushed.

Aside from showing the stark difference in perspective of the use of magic between Serie and Frieren/Fern, Fern's choice to take the laundry spell as her reward is [maybe unintentionally?] the ultimate insult she could give to Serie, even more than refusing an apprenticeship with her. It's almost like saying, "Anything I could want to learn I'll learn from my master, not you... That laundry spell looks nice though"

With that laundry spell, you never need to buy clothings anymore also, take a bath and just use the spell to clean your clothes before wearing them. One set of clothes for each season!!

Magic that completely cleans the clothing. So all dirt and microbes and such? What prevents this from being modified and upscaled to work over large areas as a means of purifying areas that have toxins or disease? Or being weaponized to remove something that is vital to living?
This could truly be legendary magic if all it requires is imagination to alter for drastically different results.

Mana capacity can also be measured by the aged of the holder means your older you've got more mana doesn't actually mean your stronger than the lesser one cause in the end it's all based on how you use it,
If serie didn't know that frieren completely mastered her mana suppression serie could end up like the demon king , serie might be a genius but frieren build herself to fight and win , they always say that frieren's mana suppression is nonsense but it's actually the only way to win against the demon king
