  • Some more footage of Forshaw Street before, during and after demolition. Also a shot of Abbey Baths - now the court buildings.

Brilliant. Well done for having the foresight to take the footage, and thanks for sharing it now.

Quigleys yes, spent many hours looking at the window display. I think it was still open here - I don't remember it ever having a name over the shop though....

More great footage mate. Cheers. Abbey baths - that's another old memory! I believe that its a court building now.

I remember Quigley's well ! Star Wars figures in the main window, and Airfix model kits displayed in the side window on Stephen Street. When you went in, there was actually two counters, the main serving counter ( He-man figures £2.99 on the rack at the end, next to the stairs), and a smaller counter at the side of the shop, where they had small model animals and stuff.

After it closed, the Swankey's store was briefly used as a charity shop in the early 80s, I remember going there as a kid.

Sarah, I must admit you surprise me....I don't mean to be rude, but you don't look old enough to remember doing that !

I really missed Quigleys toy shop next to the Angling and Hiking centre when Forshaw Street was pulled down

Ii wonder what Foreshaw Street would be like now it was still there today ? Probably all pound shops and arcades/bookies with most of the original shops gone.

Ha ha, aww ! Look at that little dog patiently waiting outside the pub for its drunken owner !

I believe Mr Quigley is still with us. I wonder what he did or when he went when his shop was forced to close to make way for Portland Walk ? I'm guessing he's probably retired by now.

Interesting...the angling and hiking shop seemed to have a narrow alley at the side of it - I've never noticed that before ! I wonder where it led to ?

I think it was access to the back of the Travellers Rest pub that was on the corner of Forshaw Street and Dalton Road

Ah, Ok ! A secret entrance ! I wonder how many drunks used that after being refused entry at the main door by the bouncer ? :D

As I said, I remember the barricaded shop @0:28 was open as a charity shop when I was a kid - after a little research, I've found out it was an animal welfare charity shop ran by a lady called Peggy Rathbone.

@ 0:42, that shop next to the angling/hiking shop used to be a toy/model called "QUIGLEY'S", had it closed down by then?

mistofoles no it was open up until about 1993, just that it didn't have a shop sign on it. It closed roundabout when the Bus and Truck shop opened in Buccleuch Street

would enjoy videos better,if one could see the names of pubs and street signs, was born in Scott st. Barrow and worked at the Odeon till coming to Aus. 1956. My brother Bill loved Barrow and was probably quite well known. He was my last contact with Barrow, so Videos are much watched, thanks,MM.

If Quigley's never had a shop sign, how do we all know it was called "Quigley's" ??
