It's very interesting to hear from a professional talking about working on a mini lathe. I will get my mini lathe on Tuesday. I am a complete novice at this but I'm so looking forward to starting my journey all the best
@@machinistmikethetinkerer4827 - Okay, Mike. I have used this thing a few times now to make hex head bolts. Pretty cool! (I only have the 48-tooth plate.) Mine came with a super-stubby Allen key made specifically for the access problem; it is very stubby and also very short in length so that you can more easily fit it into such a cramped workspace. I have a Bondhus stubby 5mm but it is too long to not get in the way during a turn. These Austrians did a good job designing this little system. If you take small enough cuts it can be amazingly accurate. It is just really SLOW. It's been a year; how's your neck?
@@holton345 it is what it is. I've since had 2nd surgery on my back and am retired now. I've since made a custom Allen wrench for myself. You can do alot with a 48!
Thanks for your videos! It is easy to get obsessed avout these machines. Plenty of accessories. Have ordered parts from all over the world for my SL and soon I can begin working. Have to restrict myself to what I really need.
Yes welcome to the rabbit hole! The last piece I bought was a necessity-i have to replace a cracked cross slide. Have fun and thanks for watching! More to come. I just have to finish the last pocketwatches I've been buried in.
Hey Mike, just found the channel and gotta say its been a joy. Love the videos and I appreciate you taking the time to share some knowledge. As someone who hopes to pick up some skills, it's a breath of fresh air to hear the man behind the camera just chat and not make everything so daunting. Best wishes
Hello Mike, I always thinking about....... if i need such a nice unimat SL, but my brain says always no, you have 3 Emcos 5, 8, 11....3 mills, 2 isel cnc, a shaper and a lot of other machines. But the SLs calling me always, buy one.......😉😂
The unimats are sweet but unfortunately the two carriage bars do not compare to the cast bed of the "cowells 90". I thought mini lathes were just toys until I recently scored a meteor 2 (grandfather of the cowells 90) complete with gears, adjustable dials, drill chuck 4 jaw, milling attachment etc. It changed my attitude, bed perfectly scraped, shiny chucks and leadscrew, silky smooth travel. I put the attention to detail down to it not being commercially viable to pay skilled labour in todays world to match it as well as the huge workforce of mostly ladies operating lathes producing precision components during the war years. Its great to be able to make things in my living room these coming winter evenings without driving my neighbours to medication,my harley is bad enough😂( a shortened comment) enjoy👍😉
Thanks Mike, very useful. Mike Walton, also in the USA, does great stuff on the unimat sl. His channel is called smallathe. I bought mine plus accessories from a retired Rolls Royce factory engineer who used to refurbish unimat … the collecting of accessories is addictive as you say.
Hey Mike, I was wondering if u could post some more videos on the good ole unimat? I can’t get enough of videos on the unimat. I picked up a few things from your videos. Thank u much
Grate video as always! It's slow to work with this micro lathe I know😄 But with patience it's a grate tool. That deviding head is nice. Though i see how can one miss a step...The pin is tiny. I need to restore my Lainen lathe soon. Something is wrong with the motor i think. Need to fix that first. Anyway thx for shearing this👌 And I hope you fully recover soon💪
Hi Mike. Only just got chance to watch this. Been working on a few things. Anyways interesting to watch you find all the little quirks of the Unimat. 😅 The "Jesus" rings made me laugh. 🤣 I don't have a name for them myself but I've certainly called them every swear word I can think of! 😂 I like the little soft jaws you made. I have a whole bunch of "copper slate straps" I use for such things. I might make a set! 👍

Glad I found your channel, I bought a unimat a couple of years ago and am getting it back up and running to start teaching myself machining.
Very enjoyable video!!! Thanks for taking the time to film it!
Thanks Dan!
I just picked up a dividing head for my SL. This was a helpful, and informative video. Liked and subbed!
Thanks and thanks for the sub! More to come...

It really is a versatile machine. I just have to remember it's not a 18" Clausing or a Bridgeport Series II Milling machine! Thanks for watching.

Yup. Them little rings have more names than I can remember. New ones are common.
