Hi Mike. That's a lovely old tool chest! 😎 It's something I've always wanted myself. The most common maker over this side of the pond is "Moore & Wright". They are very nice but my god they can be expensive! I love the sympathetic restoration you've done to yours! Way too many people over restore these old items and they lose their history! So it's nice to see you kept its originality. Top job. 👍
Thanks Matt! It's already full of tools and the more I look at it the more I like it! And yes they are expensive! I've seen a couple of M & Ws and they too are terrific!
Hello Mike, You've done a really nice job there on the Gerstner... I like that you've kept it looking its age rather than like a brand new one... Take care. Paul,,
Simichrome is indeed the best. I have used it for decades on brass musical instruments in my repair shop. I get it online in large quantities, but when I run out and need some "yesterday" I get it at our local Harley shop, heh, heh… Hide glue has been used to build violins (etc.) for hundreds of years. Another excellent product.
Very cool. I was given a watchmaker's lathe for a favour I did for a high street jeweler, saved him tens of thousands of pounds, it was 150 years old back then in 1988. It was in pristine condition with a wonderful travel case that had been wrapped in oiled leather, as good as the day it was made. My ex wife gave it away because " You never use it and he is a jeweller and will use it." I went straight around to this guys shop and he just looked me in the eye and laughed in my face. Police told me it wasn't theft so wouldn't get involved. 40 years now and it still hurts.
A neat restoration Mike! I'm sure you will enjoy using the renewedbox ... It's lovely! I love shine buffing paste - both the black and gold which is a little rough and the pink which is the fine one.
Consider protecting the lead screw and the way rods with some cardboard or rubber mat, makes it easier to clean the mess. I usually turn the headstock around 90deg for any abrasive or dirty work. Great restoration, I wish those Gerster's would be easier to find here in Sweden.
With regards to the split rivets - what is the actual length of these? The dimensions aren't listed on the Gerstner website and for me to import a package of 5 into Canada to find out, it would cost me about 4 times the cost of the rivets in shipping. I imagine that the solid part of the rivets is 1/2" since the thickness of the wood is 1/2". How long is the forked part of the split rivet? Any help you can provide is most appreciated.
Wish I could help you tho they only send you enough to do the handle. There are no spares to get a measurement from. However, I encourage you to shoot them an email on their website. I did and had very good luck with them answering my questions. I'm sure they'd be able to help you there. Good luck and thanks for watching!

Very nice. Looks to be quite a bit older than the one I picked up recently. Mine looks like it dates from the '60s. Good work.
From the 40s-50s. Thanks for watching.

I do sometimes put rags or cardboard down however, I have a small shop vac that really cleans it up good. Thanks for watching!
Very nice, I was given an old box some time back that I need to fix up..I don't think it's a brand name, but sure would be a nice addition
