Original Orient Star Diver: • The Best Premium Diver...
Today we are taking a long-delayed look at Orient's Current Top Diver. The 1964 2nd Edition. A retro refresh from their past. A remake of the Orient Calender Auto from 1964, brought up to modern Orient Star Standards.
Out of their current collection, it's their most expensive diver at around $1000 MSRP. However... is it really worth it?

The most common way comments are started on your reviews is "Another great review. Shane! " And it is with good reason because this review lets the community see a watch that could be of interest to many thru the eye of a reasoned, detailed reviewer when it could be hard to be able to try the watch on wrist. You are trusted by so many of us. Thanks again. Your efforts are appreciated.

Excellent review Shane. I also like the Orient brand, having a dress watch, a JDM Chronograph and my venerable orange bezel Mako XL, with the shake to wake movement, pressed clasp and hollow endlinks that actually fit perfectly with no wiggle! I agree that the price is a little bit high for this though. It is worth considering at a lower price though.

Haha its funny how people are complaining because Orient Star is charging for this watch what other brands will do for a watch of the same specs, I mean if you want a $2.000 watch, well... Spend $2.000 thats it. This is a $1.000 product and worth every penny. Is not a scam is just what it is. The loose endlink is just unforgivable tho

I am a fan of Orient/OS, having eight (Arena, Ray II, Kamasu, new Triton, 2 Triton/Neptunes, OS Diver, OS GMT). The only aspect of the 1964 that appeals to me is the smaller diameter. The power reserve meter is a feature I like, but realistically, the non-handwinding Arena is the only watch that really needs it. I see the power reserve as a good marketing differentiation between Orient and Orient Star watches. That is probably why Orients with power reserve meters have apparently all been discontinued.

Great review Shane! Had they kept the design of the 1st edition and tightened up those end links (wow that's awful even at $200-$300) they would have a certifiable winner, but no, they had to change it. I only have 2 name brand mechanical watches, a Mido & a Seiko, the rest are micro brands because the bang for buck is just too good to pass up.

when i sae that in real i fell in love immediately, from the design, to the finish, to the pr complication, also the band, dial, i even dig the logo. what turns me off is the weird price policy which makes orient look like invicta, who puts fantasy prices on watches, and then you just buy them much cheaper anyways. why not put a reasonable official price on this watch like about 799 usd, and get some discount from a retailer to pay between 600-700 usd in the end, would make the whole watch look much better and serious competitor. cause i find it has much more character than tissot, mido, certina or many seiko in that price league. ignoring that weird price policy, its a stunner with great versatility and character imo.

Little while back this one (well, the blueish green one) blipped up on my radar. I like it, indeed reminds me of early vintage submersible dive watches. 😉
But indeed, if I'm buying an Orient, it's because I know, like with Seiko, I'm getting a whopper of a deal for not thaaat much.
And that's just it... it's too much for an Orient (even if it's a 'Star'). Why the need to go 'exclusive and expensive' when you can do what you're good at and sell perhaps more affordable watches but at a higher volume atleast. Not sure enough about the Orient brand weight and the power indicator design for me to pick it over a Seiko Prospex SPB143J1 with a good discount.

Thanks very much Shane. Do you think it's worth me sending it to Orient Japan for them to regulate it better than its current +14spd? It's technically still in spec for that movement, but I've read that many people with the same movement are getting accuracy in the single digits. Local Watchmakers here in Australia telll me that if they touch it, it will void the warranty. So it's frustrating to know that it's running a lot worse than most watches with this movement.

The bracelet is very good and even the clasp is acceptable for a pressed type. The only fly in the ointment is the bezel, there's too much backplay for a "premium" product. I believe that the standard of movements need to go up a notch to at least 28,800bpm rather than the constant supply of slower beating ones. I just believe that Orient has their hands tied by Seiko. My point proven by statement that "Grand Seiko is a separate company than Seiko." But then G.S. starts putting their spring drives into Seiko divers. Lets not be fooled, this is an attempt by Seiko to greedily get more money in an overpriced Orient (value not good) for this watch you reviewed. Ten out of 10 times, I would pick the SPB143, SBDC167 (your watch, MM reduced). Its a marketing attempt to see how far one will go with Orient. The Kamasu is their best overall value watch. Almost perfect in every box check, and hundreds below what Seiko offers at this price. You hit this review right on the button!! Take Care.

@@user-uw1yd7kw9u Between those I'd probably go with the green Orient Star. I have a Glycine airman. It's cool, but it is a bit different, and maybe not as versatile.
As for the Willard... I just have a hard time thinking it's worth over $2k. Yes, it has the 8L movement, which is based on a grand Seiko movement. Yet they don't regulate it the same. So within spec accuracy isn't any better than their 6r series.
So for me if your spending that much, you might as well start looking at Longiness or Oris. In fact, some of the new caliber 400 Oris divers are getting close to that price on the grey market.
Another watch to check out might be the newer slim turtles by Seiko. Like the SBDC171. Similar look to a Willard / turtle, but is more in line with the orient Star in terms of price.

You can find the black dial one for around $900 but the teal one is being listed for as much as $1400.
I really liked the 1st edition but when I saw that it was a limited edition I kinda lost all interest in it.
I hate that they are doing the same thing as Seiko with their limited editions and raising the prices way beyond what any improvements have been made.
With all that being said, I really like the teal dial.

You are making an unfortunate parallel between the Orient star and the Grand Seiko. If you know, there is a higher level of Orient star watches, the Royal Orient series. Check them out, there were quite a few models.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

It's been almost a year since I made this, so forgive me but what parallel is that? Are you referring to referencing Orient Star to Orient is similar to Grand Seiko to Seiko? That's usually what some people have issues with when i do an orient Star video.
Now I can't remeber what I specificly said here, but I usually clarify it's not on the same quality level. It's just the easiest way to describe the relationship between the two brands to someone who may never have heard about it.
As for Royal Orient, I've heard of them, but I thought they were discontinued a while ago. Like around 2010 or so.

Orients in general are great value (Kamasu, Defender, Bambino) but not all can be .... frankly at the $1000 price point I am looking away from Orient towards Swiss (Sinn, Christopher Ward, Longines etc.).
Same reason people choose a Seiko over a Seiko homage with the same look and often better movement, milled clasp and sapphire crystal.

I like orient, I really do, except for one thing, I know it`s nuts and my problem! I can NOT abide the shield with lions whatever above the Orient name, it ruins an other wise fine watch line, and I will not buy one because of this! My problem I know!. Now the Orient star 1964 does not have this on the dial, THANK GOODNESS, and it just improves the whole look of the watch, would I buy one?, no idea, I would need to get my sticky hands on one and have a look? If the other Orient models had the option of not having the shield??? well that could turn me in to a fanboy, though that`s dreaming I think? Onward and upwards people🤔🙂❤

I think the china recovery is going to take significantly longer than 6 months lol… These companies are probably just saying that so their stocks dont get absolutely crushed lol. Im pretty sure it’s going to get a lot uglier in the watch market. I’m sure those price hikes over the last few years aren’t helping things either 😂
Who knows, maybe they’ll get lucky and the projected economic growth in India by Wall Street will come to fruition to help bail these guys out lol.
