I love English bulldogs. But I’ll will never get one. We had one growing up and he passed away at 1.5 years old due to a heart attack. There are thankfully a few breeders in Germany and France working to breed some of the less healthy traits out of the British Bulldog bloodline. It's a shame because I love these dogs so much but they have to suffer because someone decided them having a flat face was necessary. Hopefully in years to come the more traditional breed will make a comeback and they can be happier, healthier dogs.
One of the problems with "back breeding" is, that there is no guarantee that a longer snout also gets the "inner air pipes" back to "normal" ... It's not so easy to stretch the whole inside again too. :( Bulldogs seem to have such a nice personality it pains me every time I see one walking by that breathes so heavily.
Every single time i see one of them i think of the breathing issues. It's not fair to them or to any other breed, to enhance traits while detracting from their health.
@@Ripcraze it is not a matter of extermination, but should've rather been a matter of not creating or keeping alive a breed that would end up suffering because of very specific traits they were built upon.
I hate those attachments, I really prefer just using the dremel fully exposed. I've deremeled dogs nails for years, it's so much easier without that cover
This what I mean when people use poor breeding standards as support for "adopt, don't shop!" The general public doesn't really have a say in what constitutes a "proper" bulldog or pug; it's the Kennel Club, and until they change the breed standard(s) to be healthier, it won't change. People will buy whatever bulldog is available, and it's not like it's impossible to have that cute, squishy look with a longer snout. There are breeders working to breed out some of these more harmful traits, and I have a lot of respect for them going against the grain set by the Kennel Club.
@@CanidRose Right? The AKC has amazing lineage tracking but their breed standards are garbage for most of the dogs. Its hard to have a good registry that tracks lineage but also doesn't support unhealthy breed regulations; I love the CKC due to them trying to help certain breeds and even allowing healthy lineage mix breeds to be registered (all dogs came from mix breeds to get to where they are, we wont be able to obtain new breeds or repair old breeds without doing so.) however, because of that they are vulnerable to puppy mills and BYBs which sucks.
@@CanidRose Really? So they actually can make the snout a little longer to provide a little more protection against respiratory illnesses? Thank you for this.
I suppose, from my POV, the good thing is that I think purebred dogs are becoming less popular nowadays, due to our knowledge of what this sort of selective breeding can do. My girlfriend's sister has 2 Puggle mixes, and they have protruding snouts, while still looking recognisably like a pug. Its things like that, for me, that make me happy for our knowledge of this sort of thing. We need to fix the mistakes of 'fashion', and give these animals a better quality of life, instead of making them not able to breathe, live, and play.
Depends a lot on the breed. Some breeds, especially those still actively used for actual work, are still pretty good. Some people choose purebreds because they need particular traits, and purebreds from reliable, ethical breeders have a much greater chance of having those traits while finding the right combination of traits in a mixed breed (especially one from a shelter) is a very risky crapshoot. For example: I’m looking for a psychiatric service dog. This would be not only my first service dog, but my first dog in general. As much as I would love to adopt a rescue from a shelter or organization, I don’t have the money to risk on a dog that has a high chance of washing out of the training program, and I also just do not have the experience or confidence necessary to train out any bad habits or trauma a rescue might have. I really do need to start with a “clean slate” and a breed that has a very reliable chance of having exactly what I need. I ended up settling on the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. They’re not a well-known breed and a bit hard to find, but they have the intelligence, energy, and sensitivity that I need in a service dog, while also being more adaptable to apartments and not quite as clingy as other retrievers. While labs and goldens are much more popular for service work, they’re also victims of their own popularity: shorter lifespans, lots of health problems, some are *too* friendly (meaning they’ve lost virtually all inhibitions and won’t hesitate to bite someone), and there’s massive splits between field lines, show lines, pet lines, etc. Same with poodles and German Shepherds; the latter were already a crapshoot for service work, as they’re so multi-purpose that finding a puppy suited to a particular type of work takes a lot of extra effort and experience. The toller is smaller than a Golden or lab (in the 30-60 pound range, rather than 60-80), they have longer lifespans (12-14+ years, as opposed to 8-10), and are generally much healthier (labs are extremely prone to obesity and goldens have become almost synonymous with cancer). They’re also slightly smarter, which is massively important to me as my panic attacks often render me unable to speak so I need a dog that can figure out what needs to be done without me giving a specific command. Could I find all that in a mixed breed from a shelter? Maybe; it’s next to impossible to know unless I’m able to interact with the dog for months, and I can’t afford that. If I did find a dog with those traits from a shelter, would they also come with a lot of ingrained habits or their own emotional trauma? Definitely, and I don’t have the necessary experience or time to train those habits back out. So my safest bet is to get a purebred Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever from a breeder that has regularly produced service dogs in the past (which I did find, though it does involve a waitlist and traveling to British Columbia). It really depends on the breed, and the culture that has developed around it. Some breeds I am absolutely in support of discontinuing, mostly those who can’t even reproduce anymore without human assistance (for example, several flat-faced breeds now have to be artificially inseminated and can’t give birth without a c-section). But outside of that, it’s more a matter of changing the culture from one that values looks to one that values function.
Our family dog is a puggle and she’s the most incredible pup! She looks like a small boxer with floppy ears and a white spiral tail, like a powdered donut atop her butt ^_^ but most importantly is that she’s healthy and strong with no significant breathing or congenital issues.
@@rekkariley652 I think what's meant is that people are becoming less puritan about the breeds and are willing to drop certain features in exchange for a healthier (and happier) dog.
@@Trazynn maybe... but that doesnt mean a mix is better than a healthy breed. When breeding dogs, they have to be healthy and of good character to put it simple (within the breed-guidelines), so if you get a breed that is generally healthy, its better than a mix. There you wont know what issues the parents might have given on to your dog. So its less about the breed vs mixed debate but more about the which-breed debate. And educate dog-owners BEFORE getting a dog (so less get a dog they are unable to deal with and they end up in shelters). For some dogs standarts are starting to shift again towards a healthier version, and that is defenditely a good thing.
@@rekkariley652 you should do a DNA test before you buy. Many breeders think they are breeding purebreds when the dog is really not yet they still received papers stating purebred when not one pup in the litter is purbreax
I started grieving when I found out the AKC was in process of recognizing the American Bulldog; my childhood dog. Genetic deformities, and more people being aware of it's existence so it can be used in dogfighting here we come!! 😭
I watched last year's dog show or maybe the year before (AKC? I don't remember, it was the one that airs during the Superbowl) and just seeing a German Shepard's poor back was enough to switch to something else. It didn't look like simple nervousness and appeared to be permanently cowering. I felt sad for it.
I lost my English bulldog last summer at 3, everything you've described these dogs is so true and they really are the sweetest dogs out there. I miss you Roxy, I hope you get all the belly and ear rubs where ever you are.
My aunt and uncle train aggressive dogs for a living and they foster dogs in their spare time. They only had one foster fail and it was an English Bulldog named Ginger. She is an amazing dog and she was always so gentle and hilarious. She does this thing where if my aunt and uncle are busy and she wants to play (even though they already spent hours playing with her) she will sit on their feet and if that doesint work, she will throw her toys in the air and then look back at my aunt or uncle to see if they notice, and then she does it again, and again, until after like a few minute she gets bored and just takes a nap or plays with her tug toy. Though she does not have very good manners, she is adorable and lovable and my aunt and uncle love her. She turned 4 this year! Happy belated Birthday Ginger, I know you don’t have a phone and you can’t read but I’m saying it anyway!
Churro wasn’t worried about strutting down the red carpet showing off how handsome he looked after a spa visit. I hope that you will have a French Bulldog visit so you can feature him/her. I had an english bulldog who we just recently put down and she was the kindest dog imaginable. She was a stray and most likely mixed with something because she was suprisingly healthy with no apparent breathing troubles (her face was a bit longer than most). She lived until she was 14 years old somehow Lol
Since moving out and getting my own place a couple decades ago, I’ve had a Pug (was guesstimated to be 2.5-5 yo when I got him), that lived with me for 10 years, and an English (who had just had her third birthday before I got her), and was part of the family for six years. While Leon (the Pug) was an excellent companion, he was definitely bonded to me, even as our family grew. Lyla (The English) was probably the sweetest, kindest dog that I have ever shared life with. Stubborn is putting things lightly, especially when they are comfortable in the most awkward spots. But it was all worth it when Lyla and the person she was cuddling with were both mutually cozy! “Dog glitter”, and vacuuming multiple times a week is worth it! The health issues are intimidating, but a beauty regimen (brushing, nails, ears, nose, paw pads, folds, and tail pockets) and regular checkups will help avoid issues from going too far out of hand! I definitely have a feeling that another English may be what my family needs when the time is here to bring another dog into our home!!
correct... dogs do NOT breed of their own accord. Bulldogs are BREED by owners who sell the pups. They may be skilled and careful and they may be ignorant and careless...
These dogs were a nightmare to board when I workout at a vet clinic. 2 minutes outside in the summer heat to potty and they were gasping for half an hour. Not to mention the stinky folds :/ always did my best to make the English bulldogs comfortable
If we COULD get our Maligators to ride skateboards we would NEVER see them again as they scoot off into the sunset chasing some ball, real or imagined, until they circle the globe. Then they'd STILL insist you toss their Kong toy for them. Hahaha!! Churro is a real gentleman! This breed overheats very easily so be extra careful during hot (or even warm) weather with their exercise. That plus their difficulty in breathing can have deadly consequences. But…what a sweetie! ❤️
They're so sweet ❤️ My uncle has one, last time he visited I had suddenly gotten sick with a fever and the whole shabang. His dog didn't know me but he still crawled under my blankets and cuddled and played with me the whole time.
I've seen people breeding "Olde English" bulldogs which are more inline with their historic (and healthier) appearance and I think they're much cuter when they aren't quite so squat, but it's always nice to see a happy and well behaved poochie on the grooming table.
I have an Olde English. He’s the best of everything people love about bulldogges, without the squished face and heart issues. I got him from Cornerstone Bulldogges. They’re great people!! Very responsible breeders trying to improve the health of their pups.
This is my favorite episode....and favorite breed. I have had two Bulldogs in my life...and it is tragic that they have been bred this way...but their personalities are just irresistible.
I met bulldog at my friends house. Such a great doggo. Smelly, farts a lot, drools over your hands and his toys when you play with him. But such a charmer, friendly and kind.
Thank you so much for this video, my English Bulldog Jack and I fully agree. He is a very healthy boy, having long legs and a longer snout even though he is pure breed, he is very lean and still weighs in at 100 pound - all muscels and love for his family.
My cute fattie Horacio is turning 10 this year, and everything you said about the breed is so true! They really are great companions but sadly the health problems are terrible sometimes, Horacio nowadays barely does anything other that sleep but until he was five he was such a playful dog 🥰 Also I’m so glad you bathed him on the floor, we once took Horacio to a groomer and apparently they bathed him in a high place and made him get down by himself, and apparently that did hurt him a lot 😞
I've got the best bulldog story. My buddy had a bulldog, and I stayed the night at his place for New Year's Eve. Sleeping on the futon that night, his bulldog decides to jump up on the part with no legs under it, catapulting me over the top, straight onto the floor.
Sweet Baby! ❤ I love my bulldog Rubble. Her snoring soothes me beyond belief. When she is snoring I know we are safe. She is 10 years old and healthy. We are doing our best for her. God put dogs here so we can have a best friend. ❤ Love from Texas
I personally don’t have an English but my brothers best friend does who’s also our neighbor. He has two and they are the sweetest things, the most aggressive thing they’ve done was accidentally scratch me while trying to get up on my lap. They are adorable and I was so saddened to hear that his elder bulldog died last summer because his little sister forgot to open the door for him and he died from a heat stroke. I love them so much, they’re the sweetest
I'm British & I appreciate this handsome dog very much. Although, I am happy to hear that breeders are now actively working on reversing some of the damage done to the breed x
My mom got a bulldog when I was about 9. She had been waiting her whole life, and following along the momma's owners for months, only for him to end up having very bad grand mal seizures starting early on. She was devastated, and seeing them definitely traumatized me. Despite it he made it to about 6 before he was just clearly too miserable to continue, and my mom was once again devastated as she had to have him put down. We buried him under a rosebush in our backyard and it's gotten huge over the years. She never got over it.
it's alway sad ... this is why it's better to choose a healthier dog over the breed .. my dog is a boxer labrador sheperd (possibly other things) never had any problems and she is 8 now. mixing dogs make them less prone to genetics issuse since pure bred dog are all closely related and just the same as humans dogs breeding with their relatives is just as bad and will produce weak genetics. :(
My brother-in-law had one, she was sweet. Short lived though, sadly. One time his wife came home and the pup was excited to go greet her. Right there and there, the pup dropped dead in the midst of the excitement. It was a heart attack. Scarlet didn't deserve that. Just be mindful of health concerns if anyone adopts one.
I know how it is to have a chronical sick dog. He had two heavy heart attacks when he was a puppy (luckily, he survived both of them), had spine issues, lung issues and issues with his paw. It takes a lot of money and patience, but when he's leaning against you and loves you, all money is worth it. He lived a happy life of 8 and a half years, and I'm proud of that because the vet said that this dog wouldn't even get to the age of 1 year. All money was worth it. Every. Single. Cent.
I have some intense workplace PTSD from working in a terrible pet grooming center. Watching your videos is so helpful. You're so sweet with the dogs and your voice is very calming. Thank you for the work you do.
My English bulldog passed away almost 3 years ago. I still cry when I think of her (like right now). I haven't had a dog since her because I can't see myself with any other breed after my Georgia-Bear. I unfortunately haven't had thr money to get another bulldog due to emergency after emergency after emergency. Its left a huge hole in my heart and haven't felt complete since her.
Aside for the negative comment section, these dogs by their personality are one of the greatest dogs. They're sweethearts. That out of the way, please, please, please do your research before getting a Bulldog. I had to warn more than a dozen people about the risks, and how high maintenance they are, since they thought cuteness was the only factor.
Every bulldog I met has been nothing but loving. They thrive on attention and if they decided you are the one to give it to them nothing will stop them.
Oh my goodness. I've owned two dogs as an adult. My first was an EB I named Bobby. He was so sweet and toddler like. He had to be by my or on me (his snout on my feet) while I worked or watched TV. He liked feet. My mom would wear socks when she visited because he like to suck on her feet. (He had a blanket he suckled, LOL). When you say 'furfetti' I laughed. We are still finding 'Bobby' in amongst our seasonal things. It took me almost six years before I could entertain another dog. My GSD, Maica. Sadly I lost her to a stroke at 3 years old right before last Christmas. That was a hard candy Christmas. I love these videos! They help fill the blank. Thank you!
I would absolutely love to fall asleep next to a sleeping bulldog snoring. It would be so comforting and relaxing. I'm sure I'd be asleep too, in no time. ❤️
When you said have you ever seen a different breed riding a skateboard ,I laughed because my neighbor had a dog that could ride a skateboard... it was a English bulldog.
I've got a bulldog and yes, the farting is excessive but only to the loud snoring. I swear it sometimes sounds like someone is sharpening a chainsaw when she sleeps!
But breeding standards! Dog shows! CUTENESS THAT SACRIFICES HEALTH! I never liked smooshed face dogs as a kid. Thought they were ugly. Now as an adult I don’t like them because they’re the product of pure inhumanity. And I will never own a dog with a smashed in muzzle. We had a boxer, but he had a longer muzzle and could actually breathe. Amazing. And I wasn’t even really aware that boxers did have that same issue with being bred for having a flattened face until I started seeing them as I would walk my boxer and I was like damn…my boy is WAY cuter AND way healthier.
I love that I found youre page. I’ve been learning how to groom hair cut dogs finally after 7 years and I absolutely love it. Doodles are my favorite so far since I’m so tall 🤣

Vanessa: Did you just say "Doggio Arfmani"? That was FREAKING HILARIOUS! You made my week! And the "excessive farting" bit made my night! EDIT: Still losing it over the "chronic farting" bit. Yes; bulldogs love nothing more than to rip ass.
I haven't tuned in to a video for a couple weeks, but the audio quality of the voiceover is really good! Idk if you changed your setup at all but it worked!
If you ever get a change, please do a video of Shar pei! They do not require that much grooming but are hilarious. I had two of them and they are my absolute favorite breed of dogs!

The general public doesn't really have a say in what constitutes a "proper" bulldog or pug; it's the Kennel Club, and until they change the breed standard(s) to be healthier, it won't change.
Right?? Thank you
I couldn't agree more if you'd said that chocolate tastes OK!
Churro, what a fitting name for a dog with such cute rolls
Kennel Club - take a healthy breed and turn it into something that suffers.
The kennel club motto is “beauty is pain and genetic disorders”
I started grieving when I found out the AKC was in process of recognizing the American Bulldog; my childhood dog. Genetic deformities, and more people being aware of it's existence so it can be used in dogfighting here we come!! 😭
I watched last year's dog show or maybe the year before (AKC? I don't remember, it was the one that airs during the Superbowl) and just seeing a German Shepard's poor back was enough to switch to something else. It didn't look like simple nervousness and appeared to be permanently cowering. I felt sad for it.
Like democrats and force feeding transgender propaganda?
I lost my bulldog today at the ripe age of 20, and this video has cheered me right up. Thank you
Wow, that's hard to even believe. You got really lucky if you had a bulldog who lived that long.
There's no way it was an English Bulldog then.
20?!
I love their cuteness and how they sound almost argumentative when they “discuss” anything because their bark is so very different.
Yeah the bark is different because they cant breathe!! French bulldogs is torture breeding, please educate yourself before you call them “cute”!!
@@melbu9579 They're still cute...but yes the extreme features are an issue. Have you seen retro pugs/bulldogs. Some breeders are trying to elongate the face again
@@CoolPonies These breeders and so called standard bearers are making animals that have too much health issues 🤨🤨

@@melbu9579 i don't agree, only a specific part of french bulldogs are like this, my french bulldog is 5 Years old and luckily i got him from a very good seller, he doesnt have health problems, he has a kinda normal bark, his face is not so flattened as a Pug or (most) English bulldogs and is just kinda flat, he literally has muscles and breaths pretty well, i'll say that only a certain (probably inbred) kind of french bulldogs have that unhealthy traits
Just spreading the word: Clear the Shelters starts today (in the US, at least; I'm not sure if this is in Canada as well). Basically, NBC/Universal is sponsoring shelters nationwide to either reduce or waive adoption fees on pets in shelters, today through Sept 19. I know the shelter I'm heading off to now is waiving fees for a name-your-donation during the event.
THANK UU
I'll have to look up and see if this also applies to cats, my husband and I just decided to adopt in the next month or so a little kitty. Just gotta do some organizing first so we can better protect against an explorative little kitten.
Hi. I appreciated your information on WeRescue. I tried to find the app, but it was only for apple and I have android. I finally found an android app for it and iI got a 404 not found message. This even though there were over 7000 reviews. I looked at similar apps but they had very few reviews or didn't work. Don't know what I am doing wrong. Lost my two boys orange tabbies this year 4 months apart. Miss my kitties. This online adoption process is frustrating. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thank you.
Australia seems to be teaking a headstart on the shelter clearing...
Yayyyy
Breed "standards" have ruined the health of so many breeds. It's tragic.
Breed standards should be there to ensure the health and well-being of dogs, not for this.
The kennel club has a lot to answer for.
Oh but... but... the purity of the breed... the need for a master race... the Hundreich that will last a thousand years...
Things are changing. Its no longer necessary to dock a Yorkies tail.
My boss (veterinarian of 35+ years) loves bulldogs, but says an entire textbook could be made on their health concerns alone
Thank you so much for your videos. I suffer from clinical depression and anxiety and watching your videos always puts the biggest smile on my face ❤️🐶
I'm so glad you're also educated others about their health issues because of the breeding we've done to them. They are the cutest most derpiest doggos and deserve the best. 💖
Bulldog and pug owners love the snoring. It’s soothing.
I had an english bulldog who we just recently put down and she was the kindest dog imaginable. She was a stray and most likely mixed with something because she was suprisingly healthy with no apparent breathing troubles (her face was a bit longer than most). She lived until she was 14 years old somehow Lol
He is beyond adorable♡
I’ve got a British bulldog (2 years old) and she’s called Winnie she is so protective over me whenever I’m out with my mates
The small snout and long term health risks is what kills me inside. That WE did this by breeding them
correct... dogs do NOT breed of their own accord.
I find it hilarious that you noted chronic farting as a personality trait.
Ah, you beat me to it.
you usually call it a personality trait once you've fallen victim to them dutch oven-ing an entire living room in seven minutes.
Everyone that’s been near one of these beasts laughed their collective butts off at that comment. I promise.
that chubber body looks like it could produce methane. lol
A buddy had one when we were growing up. Absolutely brilliant dog but constantly letting rip.
1:32 "I mean, what other dog have you seen riding a skateboard?" Scrolls through the video catalog.... Yep, no Belgian Malinois videos yet.
The Animal Cracker channel just did a video on a Belgian Malinois and now I REALLY want to see on on this channel
i have a malinois mix and she likes to attack things with wheels
If we COULD get our Maligators to ride skateboards we would NEVER see them again as they scoot off into the sunset chasing some ball, real or imagined, until they circle the globe.
Then they'd STILL insist you toss their Kong toy for them. Hahaha!!
That is assuming you could teach a Maligator to ride a skateboard without first chomping it in half within, oh, I dunno, maybe 5 minutes?!?
Great companions, BTW, and I cannot ever see myself without a Maligator in my remaining time on this planet..
No Please excuse me while I go spend the next hour or so tossing my 12 year old (+) Maligator her Kong toy. Heaven forbid I get ANY sleep until SHE is happy!!
LOVE 💘 MY Lana, former MWD and LEO Patrol Pooch, too.
(Talk about a storied life she has had!!)
I love the air blowing sequences. Ears (and jowls) flapping in the Breeze!
Some are doing the same with pugs! Retro pugs
@@CoolPonies if it means some of those breeds have fewer health problems all for it.
I have an Olde English. He’s the best of everything people love about bulldogges, without the squished face and heart issues. I got him from Cornerstone Bulldogges. They’re great people!! Very responsible breeders trying to improve the health of their pups.
@@figjelly3476 that's so dope

This is my favorite episode....and favorite breed. I have had two Bulldogs in my life...and it is tragic that they have been bred this way...but their personalities are just irresistible.
Love your videos and the way you describe each dog.
I met bulldog at my friends house. Such a great doggo. Smelly, farts a lot, drools over your hands and his toys when you play with him. But such a charmer, friendly and kind.
I love your videos. They are so adorable and wholesome. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video, my English Bulldog Jack and I fully agree. He is a very healthy boy, having long legs and a longer snout even though he is pure breed, he is very lean and still weighs in at 100 pound - all muscels and love for his family.
My grandfather had an English Bulldog, she passed away just a month or so after he had.
I miss them both
My cute fattie Horacio is turning 10 this year, and everything you said about the breed is so true!
What do you weigh? You must be 20 lbs.
Ahhhhhahahahahahahahahahahahahahaaaaa
Churro wearing the happy hoodie looks like a prize fighter training in the boxing ring. :)
I had 2 Olde English Bulldogs and a Olde English Bull doggie. They are absolutely great dogs. I miss mine terribly. And Churro is so handsome❤️
olde are so better they get less issues !! thank you for choosing healthier dogs !
What a beautiful pupper!! I absolutely want to snuggle and squish his little face💜💜
Every. Single. Cent.
OMG
Very talkative fur bambinos 🐶🐾
He was once a fresh faced youth without a wrinkle, but years of crushing responsibilities have given him the face he has today.
I love seeing the different breeds that you grow. They are gorgeous dogs
These Dog shows have killed so many majestic breeds.
Hope you feel better I had a bull dog that passed to health issues isn’t a great feeling
Thank you!
He looks like a friendly cartoon ham.
