Bass Fishing one of NH's most Pristine Lakes, Grafton Pond

  • In order to keep the fishing videos somewhat interesting to the viewers and in my relentless search of quality Bass Fishing I try to shake it up and go to new places as often as I can. Grafton Pond is one of the most Pristine bodies of water here in NH and a place where me and my boy Jesse used to go to back when he was a kid, in fact he caught his first Bass here when he was about 4 years old, a dandy little Smallmouth. I haven't fished this pond in well over 20 years so I decided to get out early and give er a go before the Hoards of Recreational Kayakers / Loon Watchers filled the parking area.
I should have done a little research before I went because while talking with some other kayakers at the launch I learned that they had almost completely drained this pond 2 years ago while replacing the damn. This would explain why most of the fish were on the small side and why Largemouth dominated the catch where it used to be all Smallmouth. Oh well it was still a beautiful day spent on a beautiful pond and I managed to put another 7 Bass on the Board to add to my previous tally of 147 taking it up to 154 for the season.
Thanks for coming along.... Peace !

Thanks John, my favorite times to be on the water are sunrise and sunset. If I ever doubt there is a God and he has created this world for us to enjoy, I only have to get out on the water at this time of day because no mortal man could paint as beautiful a picture.

I'm glad to see the hellgrammite rig is working great for you. Great outing right there. I wish we had ponds like that in our area. It's rivers or massive TVA lakes here. Good stuff. have a great week.

Nice to see you getting out fishing so much this summer, I believe you are becoming my role model! Life is too short "not" to fish, & kayak fishing beats a boat most of the time.

Thanks Andy ! I guess I really am getting out quite a bit this Summer, although I thought I’d actually get out more hahaha. You are right, life is too short not to fish and the season will be over up here before you know it. I didn’t even put the motor on my 16” StarCraft this year, I enjoy the kayak much more.

Those first couple of fish made me think it might be a dink fest. That was nice of Bobby to let you use his scale. Wow... that water is low! I love fishing ponds over big water bodies. Another fine day on the pond.

It’s funny, my local favorite is 45 acres and the State calls it Waukeena Lake, this one is 320 acres and is called Grafton Pond, go figure.
I found out when I was getting off the water that this pond was almost completely drained except for the deepest holes back in 2021 when they put in the new dam. I think it’ll be a few years before the fishing recovers and we get some size again. I was also told that the pond had not fully recovered but it was 2 feet higher back in June.

@@bucktalesoutdoors7566 I've noticed all the so-called "ponds" up in Maine. They're gigantic. They do the same thing here in FL but on a much smaller scale. Wow.... yeah that was probably hard on the fish last year during the water level reduction.

Beautiful area for fishing. You are definitely adding to your total. Nice of your friend Bobby for the fishing scale.

It’s a beautiful pond for sure, I know for sure you were in Grafton County and if you were actually in Grafton you were probably 10 miles from where I live, heck if you took Rte 4 which you probably did you were about 2.5 miles from my place. Hope we get to meet in person one day. Good luck with your fishing trip, wish I had some good catfishing around here.

Hoping in a couple of years this pond will produce some bigger fish. I found out afterwards that when they put in the new dam they just about completely drained it except for the deepest holes. The population is gonna take some time to rebuild since they don’t stock warm water species here in NH. Thanks for coming along Adrian.

Haha couldn't even do a decent dink drop. Sounds dirty 🤪 A beautiful body of water right there and some nice memories flooding back of you and your son Jesse. Crazy how low the water is. It's been a dry summer. Another great morning on the water Don, with some quality largies caught. And that much closer to 222!!

I don’t know why I haven’t fished this pond in so long FitzY. Someone wrote an article in Canoe & Kayak magazine several years ago talking about how beautiful and pristine this lake is and the place became crowded with Loon watchers / recreational kayakers and if you didn’t get there early there was no place to park. It still gets crowded but when you arrive early like I do, no worries and there is rarely another angler on the water. The pond was almost completely drained a couple of years ago and the fishing has yet to recover but I think hitting the deeper holes may be where the smallmouth were hanging out…I’ll be back. Headed up to Massena to fish the Big River with my nephew’s 15 yo son Samuel on Friday , can’t wait to see the kid , been a few years.

    • @bucktalesoutdoors7566
      @bucktalesoutdoors7566  2 ปีที่แล้ว

There really are a lot of beautiful places to fish up here Dana and I’m trying to take you guys to more of them than I have in the past. I was totally shocked that all I caught in this “pond” was largemouth, like I said I was totally expecting Smallmouth. I may come back here and fish the jig and fluke in the deeper water, I thought I had a rod rigged up with one but realized I left it in the other kayak. After this trip I saw some pics of this lake from 2021 when they drained it and the only area where there was water were the deepest spots. I’ll guess that 70% of the water volume was drained. Maybe in another couple of years the smallmouth fishing will be better again. Our Big lakes like Winnipesauke and Squam are Smallmouth Meccas but I don’t like to fish the big lakes from the kayak.

The Largemouth's are showing they like Hellgrammites also, Haha. I guess the dominant Smallmouth population to a swing to the Largies. The water level being low, I know you're glad you're not having the problem that Lake Mead has. That Pickerel wanted to be in the count, but you have to let it know this count is exclusive to Bass.

I think just about everything likes the Hellgramite. I hope when this lake recovers fully from them draining it for the Dam rebuild that the smallmouth population will rebound to it’s former glory but I’ll take Largies and enjoy the beauty of this pond regardless.
