You can quibble over aesthetics, but at the end of the day it's a very functional, specialised vessel. Specialised vessels are really necessary for a well rounded fleet, they don't make for the most compelling 'hero' vessels but a fleet made up entirely of general purpose ships will not be as strong as one that includes specialised vessels.

    I would not describe her
in Navel terms. To me, its is more like an A-10 Warthog. A very effective ground support Aircraft. Flies straight in. delivers its weapons load, and straight out. And, as effective as the platform is. It still needs and requires other ships to provide space superiority role to allow the Freedom room to operate. And like the A-10 today. She is old, ugly, yet still the best at what it does.

“Straight In Straight Out” is NOT how an A-10 (or pair thereof) strikes.
As a matter of fact they often turn around quickly for re-attack on the same target. You just haven’t seen them do that as much in the Middle East, as much of the targets were unarmored structures, not moving armored columns.

The mono-nacelle I find a little weird but it adds a quaint personality to Freedom-class. Like; "I can take ye on with 1 nacelle!"
Something else I would mention is that having the same name for different classes of ships is nothing new or unrealistic; many navies including the Royal Navy & the US Navy have done that. (Naming originality is not a strong suite for many ship designers).

The Freedom Class makes a great deal of sense if you accept the idea that it was a reserve ship created and stored in large numbers specifically in anticipation of the Borg. Basically, this is what you get when you need a fleet, pronto, and you know you can't get one without cutting a ton of corners.

As an old time Star Trek fan this design reminds me of the Saladin from the Star Fleet Technical Manual of the early 1970s. At that time TOS & TAS were over & "Phase II" & the Motion picture weren't even a gleam in Rodenberry's eye yet. The Tech Manual came out with Rodenberry's blessing & for years it was considered canon for many fans. Later for some reason (various theories came out) Rodenberry started distancing himself from the Tech Manual, but it was still dear to many fan's hearts even to the crew that worked on the movies & new shows which is why bits made it pass Gene & into background parts of the movies & TV shows. It may be goofy looking to people now but the little kid in me that has nostalgia for the Tech Manual designs gets warm fuzzy feelings at the thought that they might in some way be canon.

I do love the idea of an artillery platform ship, I'd like it to be on a much bigger saucer though so it could act as a fairly decent and somewhat mobile space station. It's kind of like the earth MAC platforms from Halo except with a phaser and with a warp engine stuck on it.

Funny you should mention monitors, I discovered such ships existed a wile back and if those galaxy project derivative ships ever got brought up again on your vids, like the Springfield, New Orleans and Cheyenne, I was going to say thats exactly what those were. Ships destroyer to heavy cruiser sized with 1 battleship sized big gun turret and little else.
The freedom always struck me as a ship optimized for more unusual roles. With its massively overengined design, i imagine it could extend its warp field around another ship in distress and warp them away to safety, or use that ability to deploy defense satellites or other large objects ether to big to fit in any cargo hold or already prefabricated, just by extend its warp field around it or fitting it inside its standard bubble. On the tactical end, i could see it being used as a high warp interceptor or a deep striker to installation and infrastructure behind enemy lines, with a combination of its giant, fast engine and lance weapon.
The number of nacelles is truly not that important, beyond 2 probably having the least down sides or quirks. What really maters is a ship's total weight / the weight of it's warp coils ratio. That warp coil weight can be divided up into any number of nacelles, as long as it has an optimal ratio, any off the shelf parts bin nacelle will do. Explains ships like the Freedom, Constellation and Niagara class. I'm not sure how you could call this ship slow, it was likely the fastest ship in the fleet until the intrepid class, using 2350s tech. Nothing comes close to its total weight/warp coil weight ratio, that the warp coils are packaged into just 1 nacelle is an oddity at best.
It was sufficiently gunned in phaser arrays for its size, it just not a ridiculously over gunned 'monitor' like other galaxy project derivatives where. Its impulse maneuverability was probably below average with its awkward shape, which isn't a huge deal when phaser arrays have a fireing arc of whatever they have line of sight with. With the width of the oval nacelle, it was probably equipped with a twin banks of coils so that internally it operated as 2 nacelles, and could steer as well as a ship with a more traditional nacelle layout and coil to weight ratio. Its development cost/performance ratio was probably superb with so many off the shelf parts, but measured by any other metric it was probably pretty lousy at anything it couldn't hyper specialize in.

I will like to point otu that the Class names have been reused, The Royal Navy has had two Queen Elizeberth class.
One launch in 1914 as four ship class of battleships.
And one launch 100 years later as a 2 ship class of carriers
The ENT was about 200 years before TNG so that fits.
Edit: just remember that the USN has had two Viriginia classes in the last 30 years. One was a Cruiser launch in 1975 and served til 1998 while the other is the modern submarine class of ours launched in 2005.

    • @Tuning3434
      @Tuning3434 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The Royal Navy re-uses many many shipclass names, while they do have a tendency to name a class for their 'theme' and not the frontrunner ship's name. e.g. Tribal class destroyers (1905), (1936). Town class cruisers (1910), (1936), Leander class (1882), (1931), (1959), and many more. Makes it quite confusing when you hear a class name pop up both in WW1 and WW2 naval engagements, especially considering there are many ships that served both pre-WW1 and during WW2.

If the ship's primary attack mode is to fire highly concentrated salvos of beam energy from extreme range, I would think the class would have been named for someone or something representative of the Sniper profession, just to drive home the point.
It could be made compliant with the rules for warp drive by adding a dorsal nacelle. Put an additional cannon above the saucer for increased coverage, possibly turret-mounted, and put the Bridge at the core of the saucer where it belongs.

I see single nacelle ships as vessels best suited for work inside Federation borders.
      1. If the nacelle goes wonky, your not stranded and have a callout nearby compared to being outside of the border.
      2. I see the number of nacelles as hitting a sweet spot. One nacelle can generate a warp field, but not one that will allow high warp speeds which works with staying inside a border. Four nacelles means you have two on, two off, which extends maintenance cycle times but requires more maintenance when they come home to dock. 2 nacelles seems to be the sweet spot. A perfect balance of efficient warp field creation and less maintenance time when it has to go into dock while freeing up nacelle components for other ships

I figured out why people hate on mono nacelle ships. If that nacelle is damaged, the ship can't go to warp.
But there's probably several episodes in every series where a Enterprise, Voyager or Defiant has a damaged port or starboard nacelle and can't go to warp. It's a great big dirty finger poked into the eye of many peoples head cannon and cannon itself. Quad, tri, or dual nacelle, there is no redundancy in the number of nacelles a ship has.
As far as cannon goes, it really should be the rule: "If you want to damage the ship so it's not warp capable, the warp core must be made off-line or ALL Nacelles must be damaged/disabled". If we have mono nacelle ships of comparable size/mass able to make a stable warp bubble and get to warp 8, it doesn't make sense that other ships can't align a stable warp-field to carry the ship out at low duration/speed warp.

  • @johannschmidt3389

    Here is a Voth/Federation Hybrid.
The Hull of the Voth Bulwark Dread Cruiser would have a saucer section added to the forward section of Dread Cruiser, back to about half the entire length of the hull of Dread/Cruiser.
A nacelle would be fit to each of the wings protruding from the rear of the Dread/Cruiser.
The Scorpion Tale that extends below the hull of the Dread Cruiser would also remain and would be fit with a more powerful, faster firing and more accurate version of the cannon that is fit on the Freedom.
Impulse engines would be fit under each wing pylon with the after section containing the Voth engine being replaced with a hangar bay with three squads of defense fighters and two squads of siege bombers.
The section of Voth hull under the saucer section would house the deflector array secondary support shuttle hanger bays, two per side + heavy photo torpedo launchers.
Two micro photo torpedo launchers would be placed along the lateral sides of the saucer section under hull for lateral shots.
The Scorpions Stinger would have two , standard torpedo launchers facing forward and aft wards.
Standard phaser arrays on the saucer sections plus smaller arrays situated around the rest of the hull that would designed to defend against fast moving ships and incoming torpedoes.
This hybrid ship would be used primarily as an Anti-Borg/Synth/Clone ship.
She isn't very manueverable 10 degrees / sec turn rate, but with her long range cannon and support fighters, shuttles and bombers, she could be comparable to the Cardassian Hutet Class, which she would fair very well against.
By Synth and Clone, I mean the possibility of a Threat Force capturing the Synth Cloning technology on Copellius that was used to Clone Picard with.
If such technology ever fell into the hands of any number of Threat Forces across the galaxy, the ability for a Threat Force to first develop clones and then inject Elite and Epic skills into the clone would lead to races far more powerful than Khan.
Thus a heavy statiom breaker is needed to defend against large Threat Force vessels and installations.

I had always thought that, to create a warp bubble to get forward thrust, two nacelles were necessary. Not three, not four. The engine is the main thing, so having more than two nacelles, or less, would hamper warp power. In my opinion, that is.

Though the Freedom Class wss developed prior to the Dominion War, I could have seen Star Fleet developing a class of mono nasal ships to act as convoy escorts during that war. Designed so they could be built quickly, and consume as few resources as possible (while still being able to offer some level of protection where otherwise there would be none available), such a class of ships would have filled the same roll that the Flower Class corvettes did during the Second World War .

Your passion for ship design and ship tech in general as well as expositing about sociopolitical events and stuff in the trek universe is obvious. I think about such things myself and have always thought that in reality..what with physics and the lack of drag in a vacuum, and the requirements for spacecraft to serve a military role and a diplomatic or exploratory role...if i wanted to create a unique but not necessarily strikingly beautiful or even "cool" looking ship....i would take say a oblong asteroid...one shaped like Oumuamua...not sure of the actual spelling...and tunnel and dig the necessary levels and cavernous spaces inside it to house the engineering levels, barracks, armories, flight decks and hangars, large storage areas for consumables, all the accoutrements a ultra long endurance ship would need...perhaps built into a nickel iron asteroid....so the actual material could serve as shielding from radiation and armor...and thats what my fleet would at least partially consist off..deep space/ interstellar mobile starbases as well as actual ships. Dont need to be aerodynamic. Or pretty. Would use the available material in a systems debris ring or asteroid belt. Given powerful enough impulse engines and warp drive to be just as fast as a dedicated starship and have decent maneuverability...i dunno....i know it wouldnt have the same ooomph factor as a Akira or Excelsior class....but it would be a nigh unstoppable juggernaut if executed and designed correctly. Keep it up Venom . its nice to see TH-camrs that have a passions for scifi and get deep into their craft.

As a rule fleets are happy to repeat a class name. So long as the previous class of the same name is out of service. Freedom class of the 24th century clearly wasn’t going to be in use next to the Freedom class of the 22nd century.

Venom Geek, love your work. You have mentioned a couple of times how placing warp nacelles below the center of mass of a ship allows for superior acceleration (a la the Klingon Bird of Prey).
I know this a fictional world so it’s fine if there is no sciencey answer to this question, but her it goes. How does up down orientation have meaning in three dimensional space (when not in a gravity well)? I can see how off centered nacelles (significantly above or below the center of gravity could have an effect), but not one but not the other.
    Thanks,

    • @TheDetailsMatter
      @TheDetailsMatter 2 ปีที่แล้ว

My understanding is that impulse drive affects the surrounding physical space, while warp drive provides time compression. So it would seem that the warp nacelles give the ship speed but the impulse engines give it maneuverability. The number or size of nacelles would only determine how fast we can get there, not what course we choose to go by.

Honestly, small ships are needed for any balanced fleet. The problem with the Freedom class is the same as Treaty Era destroyer designs: packing to many systems in too small of a hull, making a fragile and unstable warship. The Freedom is preceded by the Miranda in fleet service, and succeeded by the Nebula/Defiant/Saber line. It isn't bad, just the product of flawed doctrine.

The NX wasn't designated for a particular government of star trek. It was used as the test prototype of that class vessel. Every new class vessel that came off the line the prototype was NX until it came out of trials & fully commissioned in service. Then it would get the ncc designation.

While I dont like the visual of the freedom class that much, I do like its role. And I think mono nacelles could visually be a lot cooler if designed a bit better, especially if it was say paired with some symmetrical assembly, like say a massive torpedo pod like on the new orleans, Or perhaps a Triangular mount etc etc.
Logistics and manufacturing wise, I think this is a solid ship, idk if in universe it is easier to produce but I figure it could be.

I can see in some interpretations of the universe, where you have single, double, and triple nacelles indicating a ships over al mass as being a cool idea. Reminds me of the Tarka from Sword of the Stars. But on starfleet flying saucers it just looks kinda dinky.
If the freedom had had a secondary hull it might look less weird. But this design just looks very strange. And I'm still not 100% on whether I like SF ships without their secondary hulls either.
