  • How I turned my sixteen foot long equipment trailer into a twenty footer. This is how I made my trailer longer, with proper welding techniques. If you like your trailer but want it longer, you might want to take a look.

    Downhill stitch welding with mig? Porosity not bad? 🤔

    There is nothing wrong with running stick downhill. 7018 needs to be run uphill but most other rod is ran downhill. It’s not hard to stay ahead of your slag…just takes a basic understanding of how to read a puddle

      @@acecoors I was not taught that way, but I have read up on it and I do now believe it is possible. However, I feel that it is a skill that is developed over time and practice that is out of the reach of all but a few who would be doing this type of project. I do not want someone with a limited skill set trying this out on their own then loading it and putting it on the highway. Like most people cannot juggle, but if you want to learn and try I recommend tennis balls and not steak knives to start trying. Most people cannot have their welds x-rayed or ultrasonically tested to know if they are good either. Basically if you can that is great, but why take the risk when you don’t have to…

    thanks for the video i plan on extending an old trailer i bought its 16ft right now i really need it 22ft however I'm thinking that the cuts should be off set from each side making it sturdier I'm thinking adding 4ft to the front and a 2ft dovetail anyway once again great job on the video and explaining ever move

    i sure hope you considered the front to rear weight over the dual axles ?. you already said you had trailer sway when you had the tractor loaded ?, this tells me you did not have enough toung weight. by adding the extra length to the rear , now you sure enough have split weight over the dual axles, more than likely it will not track very good going down the highway. in other words, your axles are not back far enough to make up for the extra length you added, be very careful when loaded, and driving on the roads !.

    • @GSEShop
      @GSEShop  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It tracks perfectly, and I added length bit fore and aft. What I can do now is put the tractor on the trailer more forward of the axle thus adding more tongue weight when loaded, but kept the balance when the trailer is unladen. I have taken several, thousand mile trips with it both empty and loaded and it tracks perfectly with and without a load.

    No issue welding downhill with stick. Pipe welders do it all the time and pass xrays.

    • @GSEShop
      @GSEShop  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      With pipe it doesn’t carry a structural load first off. Secondly if you ever took a AWS welding test you would know what a “slag inclusion” is and what it does to your weld in a stress test. If you stick weld down hill and stress the joint it will fail.

    • @chuckmiller5763
      @chuckmiller5763 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@GSEShop Pipe is not structural???? I would say high pressure oil and natural gas lines are structural or there would be no need to x ray the welds. Tell those who built the Alaskan Pipe Line they cannot weld down hill. I have many AWS certifications. Since the early 90's.

    • @GSEShop
      @GSEShop  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@chuckmiller5763 pipe is the only place I have found where welding downhill is even considered and it takes a very experienced welder and a good setup. They are not welding straight vertical plane like this channel and it is under different stress loads. They are not doing it in their garage with a 110 harbor freight welder and then driving it down the highway. The welds are stressed completely different.

    • @chuckmiller5763
      @chuckmiller5763 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@GSEShop I didnt say Henry the homeowner could grab his Harbor Freight stick welder and weld downhill. It does take practice. I pipeline welded for years and thats how we ran, downhill. Sometimes we ran uphill 7018. I build trailers now and stick weld the couplers, leaf spring hangers, and the tongue connections, rest is all mig. I welded on bridges in Phoenix Arizona also, that was mostly uphill 7018.

    • @GSEShop
      @GSEShop  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@chuckmiller5763 I weld for the railroad and tested vertical and overhead, no pipe, but even after reading about it I would not recommend it in this situation. It is a scary to watch some of these trailer build vids and know that there are trailers running down the highway carrying a heavy load with bubblegum welds or worse. If you watch when I cut one of the factory welds and can see where it wasn’t welded properly either.

    I want to extend a 5x10 open trailer into a 5x12-14. Should I follow the same method??

    • @GSEShop
      @GSEShop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are various methods and without seeing your trailer and setup I cannot advise one or the other. Just makes sure however you do it you keep your axle adjusted back accordingly. That is why I added 2ft to both in front of and behind the axle so it tracked the same. You can add to just the back and then move your axle rearward too.

    • @asdragasd
      @asdragasd ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GSEShop A couple feet shouldn't be an issue and really you shouldn't do more than a few feet before you consider just buying a new trailer that's rated properly. More important than adding length equally in front of/behind the axle is to keep the ratios the same. No trailer has the axle in the exact center so take some measurements and see what the ratio is of length in front of and behind the trailer and add length to keep the ratio the same. This will keep your load balanced as the manufacturer of the trailer intended.

    • @GSEShop
      @GSEShop  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@asdragasd I called a few manufactures and the rule of thumb was the centerline of the axle needs to go one inch behind center for every foot of deck. So realistically I needed to go 26 inches in the front and 22 in the rear to keep the geometry exactly the same. However, I felt that two inches wasn’t really worth messing with and if you see how it was welded probably wouldn’t make a huge difference. Just my humble opinion though and please do your own research.

    Great video! I've spent days on end looking for information on TH-cam trailer builds and Google for information on proper why to weld c channel cross members to main frame ! There's no info or photos showing! You took the time to explain critical areas of weld and showed the finish product! TH-camrs that built trailers with C Channel just show tac or parcel or don't show the full weld or explain if the web , flange or the whole cross member should be fully welded !
